Discover Dog Friendly Holidays in Northern Ireland

Explore the Emerald Isle with your dog

From dramatic coastlines to rolling countryside, Northern Ireland is full of adventure for you and your four-legged friend. With sandy beaches, famous filming locations, and welcoming pubs, it’s the perfect place to explore with your pet by your side.

Dog-friendly holiday accommodation in Northern Ireland includes a wide range of stays near popular destinations such as the Giant’s Causeway, Belfast, Derry, the Mourne Mountains and the Causeway Coast. Traditional cottages are a popular choice for couples and families, offering comfortable interiors, practical kitchens and enclosed gardens where dogs can relax after active days out. Spacious family houses provide extra bedrooms, generous living areas and dining space that make group breaks easy and good value. Coastal lodges and modern cabins appeal to younger travellers looking for stylish accommodation close to beaches, walking trails and outdoor adventures, often with parking, terraces and useful dog-friendly features such as wash areas. Barn conversions and countryside retreats bring character, privacy and room for children and pets to enjoy the outdoors. Apartments in towns and cities offer a convenient base for shorter breaks with attractions, shops and eateries nearby. For something different, shepherd’s huts create a cosy escape surrounded by scenic landscapes.

Why choose a dog-friendly holiday in Northern Ireland?

Northern Ireland combines rich history, breathtaking scenery, and a famously warm welcome. The Causeway Coastal Route offers one of the UK’s most spectacular drives with plenty of dog-friendly stops along the way. From Game of Thrones® locations to charming villages and lively cities, there’s something for everyone. And with countless walking trails, open beaches, and pet-friendly attractions, your dog will love it as much as you do.

Best dog-friendly beaches in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland’s coastline is blessed with wide sandy beaches and hidden coves. Here are some of the best for dog walkers:

  • Portstewart Strand – a huge expanse of golden sand on the Causeway Coast, popular with dog walkers year-round. Managed by the National Trust, they request that dogs be kept on a lead at all times to prevent disturbing any cattle. Dogs are allowed to be let off the lead past post 10, so there’s plenty of opportunity for them to stretch their legs!
  • Benone Beach – one of the longest beaches in Northern Ireland, stretching for 7 miles, with stunning views towards Donegal. Dogs are allowed on this beach for most of the year, with restrictions in place between June 1st and September 15th.
  • Murlough National Nature Reserve – backed by dunes and views of the Mourne Mountains, this is a fantastic spot for lead walks with your dog. To protect birds and animal grazing areas, dogs must be kept on a lead at all times.
  • Whiterocks Beach, Portrush – famous for its limestone cliffs and sea arches, with plenty of space for sandy strolls. Similar to Benone Beach, dogs are not allowed on the beach between June 1st and September 15th.

Dog-friendly attractions and activities in Northern Ireland

  • 🌊 Giant’s Causeway – Northern Ireland’s most iconic landmark. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is fully dog-friendly, welcoming dogs into their outdoor spaces, visitor centre and café.
  • 🌿 Tollymore Forest Park – a magical woodland at the foot of the Mourne Mountains, perfect for forest walks, riverside trails, and exploring Game of Thrones® filming locations.
  • 🏖️ Causeway Coastal Path – stretching for miles along the rugged coast, this walking route links many of Northern Ireland’s highlights, with plenty of dog-friendly stretches.
  • 🗻 Mourne Mountains – ideal for energetic dogs, with hiking trails, reservoirs, and panoramic views across the Irish Sea. It is requested that dogs be kept on a lead at all times during your time on The Mournes.
  • 🏰 Enniskillen Castle - 15th century castle in Enniskillen built by the Maguires. Now a museum & visitor center with great views over Lough Erne.
