There is so much to do in this popular area all year round. The nearest town is Fordingbridge on the banks of the River Avon. It was recorded in the Domesday Book and the first Great Bridge, built in medieval times, is upstream from the ford and is a major feature of the town with its seven graceful arches. The town has developed into a wonderful place for visitors with its beautiful scenery, nature havens, cycleways and welcoming people. There is a museum, Alderholt Mill, dating back to the 15th century, which serves cream teas at weekends; they also offer milling demonstrations, and Braemore Church exhibits many Saxon features, and is believed to have been founded soon after. Within easy driving distance are beaches at Bournemouth, Poole, Sandbanks and Studland Bay. Also within easy reach are Poole Nature Reserve, Brownsea Island, and to the west, The Purbecks, Corfe Castle, and Jurassic coastline.
Moors Valley is a popular place to visit and is dog friendly, and offers scenic walks and excellent wildlife spotting. There are a host of recreational activities such as angling, orienteering, cycle hire, golf, Go Ape Treetop Adventure, Forest Segway, walking groups, canoeing and pétanque. Avon Heath is also nearby and is ideal for keen walkers. There are various fishing lakes (mainly carp) and golf courses in the area too. The New Forest National Park is easily accessible, which provides miles of scenic walks and a network of bridle paths and footpaths, and you can often find the ponies and cattle roaming the streets in one of the many picturesque villages. There is a waterpark not far away, as well as a leisure centre with swimming pool.
The property is very convenient for road links to the beautiful cathedral cities of Winchester and Salisbury, National Trust homes and gardens, including Forde Abbey and Kingston Lacey, Christchurch’s harbour, Paultons Park, Adventure Wonderland and Stonehenge. Other attractions include Marwell Zoo, Monkey World, Beaulieu Motor Museum, Bovington Tank Museum, the New Forest Otter and Owl Park and maritime Southampton. Beach 12 miles. Shop ½ mile, pub and restaurant 330 yards.

    Charles – 20 Sep 2019
"A clean, well maintained and spacious property, with good quality furniture and comfortable beds. We enjoyed the large hot tub and made good use of the excellent pool table in the garage unit. Plenty of room for a large group or family on a rainy day with a huge secure garden for the dogs to run around with ample parking for several cars. Had an enjoyable weeks holiday the Lions Retreat being well located to venture into the New Forest and it’s attractions."

"Amazing house very well located to lots of other nice areas. Would well recommend this to anyone.?"
    Mohammed – 17 Jul 2019
"My friends and I had an absolutely wonderful time at The Lion Retreat. Our host and the property owner Mike (who is also a Michelin starred chef), went out of his way to ensure our stay was as comfortable as could be. A more than sufficint amount of fresh towels and linen were provided, including a seperate set solely for the amazing hot tub. We loved the bi-fold doors that led out onto the garden which accentuatd the open plan living space and was especially welcome with the fabulous weather we enjoyed over the weekend. As a group of 9 guests, we had plenty of seating both indoors and out, whilst the garden space itself was more than large enough for us to enjoy a friendly game of cricket, which seemed fitting during the world cup. The highlight though, was of course the spacious hot tub, paired with its own independent changing room facility. Mike would kindly visit each day to ensure the tub was in perfect order, respecting our privacy which we were most impressed with. All in all, we couldn't recommend The Lion Retreat more, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to return again"

"Great family celebration location with great proximity to New Forest attractions including pubs and restaurants. A couple of observations that would have made the experience even more enjoyable: 1. The dish washer is very quirky and if a normal domestic one was installed life would have been so much simpler.2. The water pressure is insufficient for the number of potential users in the property. Probably nothing to be done but, if that is the case, a little bit of forewarning so that showers could be organised would have been helpful.3. Although there was plenty of hanging space in the bedrooms additional cabinet storage would be helpful."

"My family spent three nights at this very spacious house. Our grandchildren enjoyed playing in the garden where there is plenty of room for ball games. The open plan layout works very well as there are two large comfortable sofas and two large armchairs. The dining table seats ten."

"Overall experience was excellent the whole family enjoyed a relaxing weekend with good use of the games room and the hot tub being a bonus even at this time of year"

"Great property to use for family celebration involving children. Plenty of space."

"We had a lovely stay at the Lions Retreat at the October half term. The house is spacious, comfortable and well-located with an enormous garden bordered by a stream. The stream was only shallow when we visited and hazardous only with very young children. The owners were very pleasant and helpful. However there were a few things about the property that could be improved to make the stay even better. The dishwasher is actually a pub-style glass washer and required constant filling and unpacking as it held only a few items at a time. There were no instructions when we got there, but Mike kindly came up to the house having printed some out. There were a few items of equipment that would have been very useful. As a family group with 4 children we ate in most evenings but it would have been great to have a potato peeler and a large tea-pot. Also a small sharp knife. We struggled to get any heat in the upstairs rooms despite turning up the thermostat . Fortunately it wasn't too cold and we managed without. Downstairs was heated by underfloor heating which was very responsive and comfortable. The quality of the fittings and furnishings was good, plenty of towels and comfortable beds. The jacuzzi was excellent and easy to use. The laundry room contained an extra fridge and freezer . the fridge was really useful to accommodate our overflow of milk etc.All in all a very pleasant stay but it could have been much beter with just a few little improvements."

"We all had a lovely family weekend holiday at the shandwick cottage, it was equipped with everything you needed and more! Would definitely recommend! Dog friendly too! The center of the new forest was only a 20 minute drive away with lots to see and do for all!"
