Around the bustling square with its ancient cross are an interesting mix of quaint and individual shops, cosy pubs, charming teashops and fine dining restaurants, and the open-air swimming pool offers endless fun throughout the summer months.
Thirsk, 7 miles, is renowned for its racecourse and connections with the famous vet James Herriott and the World Heritage site of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal is just a 40-minute drive away. For those seeking adventure, visit the gliding club at Sutton Bank and Yorkshire Outdoors at Felixkirk for off road driving. There is a wealth of history in this area, with abbey ruins at Rievaulx and Byland, and historic houses at Castle Howard and Nunnington Hall. "We have just returned after a weeks holiday in forester's cottage..it has been fantastic, not only the location is spectacular, Ginni and her family couldn't of made our stay anymore welcoming & relaxing! We have been to the cottage previously, and second time around did not disappoint. The cottage has everything you could require and more, it is extremely comfortable and cosey, which is perfect for either one of the lovely walks from the door step or further afield. You can step out of your front door and are immediately within boltby forest, and easily onto the Cleveland way, our dog loved it and it was safe for him to run freely. We also enjoyed yummy homemade cake with a pot of tea, and also offering beers and mulled cider, a perfect stop at the High Paradise Tea rooms which again is on your doorstep. If you are looking for beautiful scenery, tranquillity, and time away from everything, then this is the place for you! Thank you so much again for a fantastic treasured holiday, we will certainly be returning! Alison, Donna & Woody x"

"Enjoyed our stay at the cottage and great for the dogs as walks all around without the need for leads.Nearest pub does nice food and is a nice place for a drink by the fireLots of places to visit within an hours drive and train from Thirsk takes you into York in about 15 mins and cost was very reasonableHouse can be chilly even with the fire going so take jumpers and slippers.TV was limited and sometimes struggled with getting anything but to us this was only a small problem as we was mostly outShower was poor upstairs but lovely big bath and plenty of hot water so really not an issueWe all enjoyed our stay and felt relaxed as very peaceful look forward to visiting again next year"

"A superb out of the way holiday cottage. Excellent walking right from the door. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone, however it is more than a mile away from the nearest road which is both a blessing and not. Only 5 miles from Thirsk which has everything you could need. The owner was lovely and very welcoming, the place was immaculate and very well equipped. Nothing was any trouble, even the weather was lovely!"

"Fantastic break in a lovely cottage situated in perfect location."
    Ian
"Fabulous cottage in a wonderful location for peace and quiet"
    Julie
"Perfect place to get away and relax, no traffic and peace and quiet, apart from the cockrel!! Tearooms at the farm a nice place to sit and have something to eat and lots of walks straight from the door of the cottage.Cottage was lovely and warm, garden was nice for the dogs and to sit in. Owner lives next door and nothing was too much trouble and queries were dealt with at the time."

"A very enjoyable stay in a lovely location."
    Francesca
"Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and have fallen in love with North York Moors. Our dogs had so much fun exploring the countryside. None of us wanted to leave and we'd love to stay at High Paradise Farm again, thank you x"

"Fantastic location, made to feel very welcome by the family."
    Chris
"Wow - what an amazing place. The cottage is comfortable and the location is stunning. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Superb base for walking and cycling. Admittedly it's 4 miles to the nearest pub, but it's great to be so rural and the tea shop is excellent. Also lovely to be somewhere with so little motor traffic"
    Jacqueline
"Absolutely amazing few days brilliant weather fantastic location. Only letdown was both showers were poor to useless. We did mention it to ginny (who was great throughout) was no doubt aware of it as the visitors book made mention of it previously. poor showers seem a general issue with cottages. i dont understand why the owners dont address the problem."
    Shona
"Spent a heavenly 4 nights there, wonderfully out of the way and quiet. It's a short drive to the nearest town. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, it is a working farm but don't let that put you off, we had two toddlers in our party which thought feeding the ducks was the best thing ever. The owners are lovely and suggested some wonderful days out. Would definitely return."
    Gillian
"We had an excellent stay here last week, superb setting, and lovely owners; a comfortable cottage that suited our family very well. Located within reach of so many attractions, and lovely tearooms next door. We couldn't fault this place !"
    Lynn
"We had a wonderful week at Foresters cottage. The owners are very friendly and helpful and the cottage warm and comfortable. We took our two dogs with us and enjoyed walks from the door everyvday. The Cleveland way is just a few yards away and the walks are wonderful with spectacular views. We absolutely loved it. We would certainly recommend it and would happily book here again."

"I wanted somewhere to escape where I could relax with my 3 dogs, with easy access to walks ie somewhere where I did not have to travel to find suitable walks for my dogs, and here more than ticked all the boxes. Just 3 strides out of the front door and I was on the path taking me to the moors and Boltby Forest. The views were amazing, and my dogs thought they'd gone to heaven.Ginny gave my dogs and I the warmest of welcomes. The tea room, where she did all the home cooked meals, and baked the cakes etc....was absolutely gorgeous, with food to match so the sign in the window, 'welcome to paradise' was very apt. My Aunt and Cousin stayed a night in one of the bed and breakfast rooms, during my stay, and also rated evrything 10 out of 10. I would have no hesitation in recommending anyone looking for a peaceful holiday to go to Foresters Cottage, whether dog owners or not."

"Love this cottage . Second time we have stayed here it's in a beautiful location . We were made very welcome again , can't wait to return"

"Fabulous cottage in superb isolated location . Lovely and cosy and welcoming! Great stay, really enjoyed ithe (especially the oil burner which kept us lovely and warm)"

"We visited mid-November and there was snow. The cottage was cold, despite having the wood stove burning all weekend, we just couldn't get the front room warm enough for my mother, 76, who ended up wearing her outdoor jacket inside trying to keep warm. The cottage is ok. It's a bit unloved, with chipped crockery, etc and some of the DIY is frankly amateurish (smoke sensor mounted on the corner of a door? Another is mounted vertically in the bedroom so that the LED flashes in your eyes at night...). Some of the cooking dishes were a bit grim and needed a scrub (which we had to ask for, along with dishwasher tablets, not sure if these are normally provided).Like some other reviews point out, there are lots of animals on the farm which is nice for the kids. Gini and everyone running the farm is lovely and very friendly. The area around the farm is fantastic for woodland walks and the views are incredible. There are a lot of dogs however, and a result, dog poo. Don't get me wrong, I love dogs and we befriended several over the weekend. But if you have children you need to warn them if they play on the grass verges around the farm that there is dog poo absolutely everywhere. Bit grim when you're building a snowman to keep finding it under the snow! But for me personally I left with a bitter taste in my mouth, or rather a bitten leg. As we drove off in the van, I'd left the boot open. Madam comes running out to tell us, followed by her pack of dogs. I get out to shut the boot, the dogs run up barking like mad and start biting my legs. One left two holes in the back of calf and drew blood. Wasn't impressed, and had to consider whether to get a tetanus jab when we got back.Fair enough if you want to keep dogs, but letting your dogs bite the visitors is unacceptable. I'm sorry to have to relate this part of the weekend, but it wasn't a good way to end what had been a nice stay until that point."

"Excellent location for get away and great walks with dogs. Warm friendly welcome. Just what we were looking for. Would look to return."

"a good get away from it all cottage with excellent walks from the door!"
    Ena
"Lovely cottage and excellent walks. However could have been improved if the shower in bedroom was working, the storage in heater in downstairs bathroom was working and radiator in hall had been plumbed in and working as after all it was winter time and was at times cold. We found the owners hard to contact having knocked on doors and leaving a message on answerphone without success. Perhaps the long narrow drive to cottage should be mentioned for future reference although it wasn't a particular problem for us"
    Joan
"Loved it! Perfect location with miles of walking straight from the door. The cottage is beautifully appointed and well equipped with everything you could want to make your stay comfortable. The log burner was lovely in the evenings, and the sofas were really comfy to stretch out on! The garden is delightful and the cafe does the best cream teas!Ginny was very warm and welcoming and had put a lot of effort into making sure the cottage was just right. And it was!My only quibble, and it`s only slight, are the resident dogs. They are lovely and friendly but two of my dogs are dog-reactive and the fact there were strange dogs in "their" garden was unsettling for them, so just be forewarned if your dogs aren`t overly sociable!!"
    Martin
"Lovely cottage, beautiful surroundings, very friendly and helpfull owners."
    Chris
"Cottage had not been cleaned on arrival at 330 pm. We were unable to enjoy the garden with our dogs because the owners 8 dogs and chickens were constantly in the garden messing and even came into the house if any doors were opened , this meant the house was very warm inside in hot weather due to the fact the room heater in the living room was on 24 hours a day and could not be controlled. The above spoilt what is essentially a very nice and comfortable cottage ."
    Patricia
"Best holiday cottages we've ever stayed in. The most dog friendly, the best location and friendliest hosts. Walks on your doorstep and surrounded by proper Yorkshire!"
    Leslie
"The cottage was a good size and a brilliant location for us apart from the long drive up on poor road surfaces. For us it was let down by some small irritations, like having a heater going 24/7 which made it too hot even with windows open; the stairs gate was rickerty, an armchair had supporting straps missing, the shower in one bedroom did not work, dining room chairs with detached seats were things that let the package down.We have had better value and facilities for money, from lower priced cottages in the past."
    Karen
"A beautiful cottage in a beautiful location. Everything you could wish for in a get away from it all holiday. Will definitely be looking to return."
    Esther
"My family including my 3 year old nephew came to stay for the week & we bought the holiday as a gift for his 40th. Well they all loved it. The location is stunning with a variety of walks, but the cottage is surrounded by friendly farm animals & has a wonderful tea room with gorgeous home cooked food, & it serves alcohol! Ginny & her family are so friendly & helpful. The cottage itself is an absolute joy, the feel of it, it's charm & also it has everything you need. The appliances are simple & easy to use. The garden is lovely & big & wraps around the cottage. I live locally in Thirsk, & the drive into town iso only 15/20 mins. The Carpenters Arms in nearby Felixkirk is a great pub to meet at & have a drink/bite to eat. We had a wonderful time thank you Ginny & family."
    Donna
"Ideal location. Disappointed with the cleanliness of the cottage. The oven was really dirty to the point that we wouldn't use it. And there were other areas in the cottage that needed a good clean. The owners dogs came into the garden and fouled on a daily basis, which we felt was wrong. Felt garden could of been made more dog proof, it was advertised as being enclosed! We would return there because of location and the owner made us feel welcome."
    chloe
"Absolutely beautiful property in a stunning location. Ginny was very welcoming and we had a brilliant time"
    michelle
    "fabulous !"
    Simon
"The owners were incredibly friendly and helpful. Our three children loved the opportunity to help feed the farm animals. The property was warm and comfortable and a welcome place to return to after a day exploring the area. The views are amazing and it is incredibly peaceful. The cottage is well appointed and felt homely."
    M.
"Excellent Location and wonderful family running this lovely small holding, nothing is too much trouble, the cottage very cosy and comfortable the tea room is the same warm and welcoming. Bottle of wine on arrival was a nice touch. Perfect for the whole family including the dogs as they can be off lead and mix with the host family's menagre."
    Stella
"We had a fantastic week . Our 2 Border collies loved the walks straight from the door!!!. We had everything we needed to make our stay a great one. We will be visiting again either to stay in cottage or B&B."
    Viki
"We had an absolutely brilliant time the cottage was perfect. The kids really enjoyed seeing the animals and going on great walks. I would highly recommend this great spot with brilliant hosts."

"Lovely cottage, very friendly owner set on a farm so in the middle of open countryside. We spent a week at new year with friends and three dogs and the setting and cottage couldn't have been better."
    Kris
"A lovely & cosy cottage in a great location. We received a friendly welcome when we arrived. It was a good place to set a base for visiting local areas & walking."
    Rachel
"Lovely cottage, well run by Ginny; everything you need even a tea shop on site."
    Kay
"Fantastic. Couldn't have asked for more."
    Gillian
"A last minute booking so I could be a little closer to the hospital that my mum was in. The cottage is in a lovely location with walks from the door. Very comfy and cosy. The owners were very helpful and friendly. I'm sure we will be back to enjoy the cottage fully instead of a base for hospital visits. Our dog Brucie absolutely loved the walks and making friends and playing with the owners dogs. We were a little disappointed that previous guests hadn't cleaned up after their dogs in the garden and had left washed pots on the drainer and plates in the dishwasher."
    Lesley
"Lovely cottage run by by friendly people."
    Richard
"Lovely cottage, wonderful location, friendly and very helpful owner, tremendous scenery when the weather is good and lots of very interesting places, monuments and museums to visit when it is not so good."
    Alison
"Lovely cottage, we can't wait to come back in the new year with our dog!"
    Laura
"Besides the 2 very uncomfortable couches and only Freeview and no cellphone signal it did have a good Wi-Fi. It was also always warm with the back boiler on 24 hours keeping off the chill, had a lovely enclosed garden, and so convenient for dog owners with the toilet and extra shower with shallow tray shower right inside the door for washing dogs dirty paws. Always very hot water and easy to use hob, oven and microwave. Excellent walks with the Cleveland Way and Bolt Forest within 10 minutes walk. Owner friendly and helpful at all times. With new comfortable couches it would be ideal."
    Peter
"Superb location and excellent property. Very friendly and welcoming owners - superb for pet owners."
    Debbie
"The cottage has everything you need for a lovely dog friendly holiday. The location may be a little remote for some. The very long narrow steep and bumpy road up to the farm may not be to everyone's liking, but the end result is worth the trek. No need to worry about traffic or leads, walks straight from the front door onto the moors. The huge sofas were a welcome sight after a long day's walking and the beds were as comfortable as you could ask for. I would recommend the place to anyone who really does want to get away from it all. The peace and quiet is amazing."
    Frances
"We had a great time just wish we could have stayed longer.Cottage was beautiful and very homely.Ginni was great and welcoming.. we will definately be booking again."
    Ken
"Very comfortable cottage in a delightful location. Nothing too much trouble for the owners. Keen to return when circumstances allow."
    David
"Fantastic holiday, wonderful owner Ginni, who is nearby and runs a tea room . Excellent for walks and dogs, lovely woods and national park and nearby villages, lots of historic monuments, sights, breweries and sites of interest. Two weeks went past far too fast. We will visit again :)David and Jeni."
    raichel
"fantastic cottage perfectly situated for walking in all directions, stunning but only a stones throw from Thirsk. Couldn't ask for nicer hosts. Dog friendly, we had four and no stress caused from anyone! We would stay again."
    Sue
"A remote and idealistic place to retreat from the rat-race - a Narnia - for those who want an adventure in our beautiful countryside, either in the woodlands or on the moors. You don't have to go far on foot or bicycle to find the most incredible views or a mystical lake - with the added bonus of the fairytale farmyard on the doorstep with all the livestock. The cottage was spacious, clean and comfortable. Our hosts were very welcoming and helpful; And serve a good selection of snacks and lunches along with cakes in their tea rooms.A wonderful holiday."
    Christine
"We had a wonderful week here. Dogs loved the walks from the door and even got used to Sausage joining us! Very dog friendly but not everyone will be happy with the farm dogs coming into the garden even when gates are closed. We loved the ducks who visit the bird feeder but lived in fear that one of our dogs would catch them!Very clean and well equipped but a measuring jug would have been handy. Lovely to have a log fire - except despite our best efforts we couldn't get it to stay alight. I'm sure Ginny would have been happy to assist but it wasn't cold so we didn't bother. One down side was the bedding which was really cheap - duvet seemed to be covered in paper - spending a few more pounds on this would really make a difference. Big comfy sofas would also benefit from comfy cushions. There are plenty but they're really hard.Overall though these were minor niggles and we would definitely come again."
    Noreen
"We stayed at Forresters cottage for our honeymoon and it was amazing! We took our 3 dogs with us and had the most wonderful, relaxing week. The cottage was beautiful and we were made to feel so welcome. The walks from the door were fantastic. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone."
    Debbie
"A lovely cottage in a fantastic location. Extremely friendly hosts who also respected your privacy. With the tea rooms on the doorstep you didn't need to cook if you didn't want to. The garden wasn't dog proof but we had been told that before we went, however dogs coming in did cause a slight problem at times but the fencing may have been improved now. The only other downside was the sofas as we both have back trouble and there was no support in them. This seems to be a problem in most cottages. Would definitely like to go back"
    Nicky
"We had a wonderful week, the family are very welcoming, the cottage warm and homely. We took our dogs and they loved the long walks straight from the front door, the cottage is very dog friendly. An added bonus was the tea rooms, everything homemade, very useful for a light lunch after a long walk."
    Sue
"beautiful cottage , lovely location, although somewhat difficult to find and navigate to.Unfortunately the sofas /couches in the living room were far too low and uncomfortable ...O.K for the young and agile but not so much for folks of a certain age and / or physical capabilities. The main bedroom also could have benefitted from a larger bed.The general furnishings and equipment were as expected in a holiday rental .The locks on both front and back doors were faulty and at times could not be locked or unlocked when needed.....concerns were, that should we need to evacuate the cottage we may have been unable to exit .........."
