The Snug is a terraced cottage set in the old mining village of Glaisdale in the heart of the Esk Valley. To the rear of the property is a private courtyard, a suntrap where you can sit and enjoy a drink taking in the wonderful uninterrupted views across the valley and the rolling countryside. With some of the best walks in Yorkshire, Glaisdale is a great base for walkers, cyclists and those wishing to experience the beauty of the North York Moors National Park. The village lies just south of the River Esk where there’s excellent fly fishing to be had (licences can be purchased from the local shop). The Esk Valley Railway runs through the village. Trains run from Whitby to Middlesbrough on a regular basis. From Whitby you can also catch the steam train over the moors to the market town of Pickering.
The town and seaside resort of Whitby is less than 10 miles away where you’ll find an array of shops, pubs and restaurants. Whitby is still a busy working harbour and you can sit and watch the fishermen bring in their catch or see the children enjoying the pleasure boats. Whitby has a large sandy beach and perched on the hill overlooking the town is the famous Whitby Abbey. The cobbled streets lead you up to the abbey where the last stretch is a climb of 199 steps. There are excellent views from the top down towards Robin Hood’s Bay and Scarborough, then north towards Sandsend and Staithes. Beach 10 miles. Shop 40 yards, pub and restaurant ½ mile.

"Fell in love with the place. Highly recommended"

"Fab base to explore the area, lovely dog friendly pub. Bit hit n miss for parking is the only negative, you might be further up the hill."
    Kathleen – 17 Sep 2019
"Lovely cottage and setting, just lacked couple of items to add to the comfort. There was no cafetiere or jug large enough for ground coffee,l was surprised as l have never been to a cottage without one. I assumed there was no washing machine because of restricted space but saw an outbuilding that had plumbing in place. If a washing machine had been provided we would have stayed two weeks, but with a young dog and lots of muddy walks, one week of laundry to take home was enough."

"What a shame this cottage could be lovely, unfortunately looking very tired and not very clean had to start and clean all the cooking utensils when we got there and the whole place smelled of dogs . The outside yard was awful but the view was beautiful what a shame!!!!!!"

"The Snug was very clean and tidy but as we had a dog with us we would have appreciated a strong hoover so that we could have left the cottage as clean as we found it. We had a fantastic week and really enjoyed the local walks and meals at both local pubs. I didn't take a hairdryer and there wasn't one in the cottage so I'd advice you take one with you but overall a great little cottage to stay in"

"Had a lovely few days exploring the surrounding area, the snug was compact but had everything we needed, was lovely and clean and comfortable.... the carrot cake that was left for us was a lovely touch and delicious lol"
    Claire – 4 May 2019
"We really enjoyed our stay in the snug. It was clean and comfortable. I was worried about the bed and lack of pillows before arriving having read other reviews but I shouldn’t have. We found the bed comfortable and there were plenty of pillows. It’s nice to see the owners have acted upon previous little issues. It’s in good location to explore the moors. We did need to put on the fire most nights but you can get coal in the shop just a few doors down. Thanks so much for the milk and cake, very much appreciated. Great food in the pub in the next village ‘Horseshoe hotel’"
    Janine and graham – 4 Mar 2019
"Fabulous little cottage. Perfect for two and a little dog. Left my keys there and the service I received in getting them back was second to none. The cottage was spotless and will definitely go back. I didn’t have a pen to write in the welcome book but we where very pleased with our break x"
    Jane – 29 Jan 2019
"Loved it. The open fire was a bonus. Local power cut for 3 and a half hours. But was well stocked with coal so we stoked up the fire and read and relaxed. We would like to explore the area in warmer weather. We will be back."
    Jacqui – 4 Jan 2019
"We had a lovely time. The coal fire made it very cosy, the village was welcoming and the surrounding area quite beautiful. I do advise taking extra pillows if you like more than one (I read earlier reviews and so took some; we also took some additional kindling just in case, though there was some in the outhouse). The mattress does make you roll together a bit but I have certainly slept on worse!"
    Mrs Stones – 25 Nov 2018
"Was very comfortable and relaxing for myself and dog. Lovely views. Walks from doorstep. Local shop few doors down. Super quiet. Ideal base to explore North York Moors, villages, and quite close to coast also (Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay etc). Cottage comfortable and warm. Thoroughly recommend."
    Helen – 30 Oct 2018
"Good location, ideal size for two and the milk and cake on arrival were welcomed. However, a few small things that would have made the stay more comfortable: • Extra pillows - only one pillow per guest available, • No hair dryer available, • Fire lighters, newspaper and coal were available but no logs or kindling for the fire. Arriving once the village shop had closed we couldn't purchase any and although an electric heater was available, given the temperature we spent the first evening sat in the cold. Also we didn't want to leave an electric heater on overnight so the downstairs was extremely cold the following morning.• Wifi/internet would be a welcome addition, as well as a small supply of DVD’s (a small selection could be purchased from a charity shop!). Minor and inexpensive additions but they would have made a difference!"
