About this property

A substantial stone-built cottage in the heart of Egton village, with views over the village green. This lovely four bedroom property is an idyllic rural retreat for larger families or couples seeking rest and relaxation near Yorkshire’s heritage coast.

Wheatsheaf Cottage has a warm, traditional ambience with bags of character. The gorgeous farmhouse-style kitchen boasts a Rayburn range, there’s also an open fire and period beams, plus a charming ‘witching post’ where you can have your initials carved as a permanent reminder of your holiday!

With the coast/Whitby a five minute drive away and the North York Moors on the doorstep – the cottage is surrounded by breathtaking scenery, well-suited to those with a passion for the great outdoors.

A stone flagged entrance porch leads to an open plan living area, creating a convivial holiday atmosphere.

Branching to the right is an elegant sitting room with wooden floors and an open fire, offering supreme warmth after a bracing moorland ramble. A TV/DVD and selection of books is provided for your entertainment – or simply relax in good company and chat the night away. This area boasts the quirky ‘witching post’ – folklore says it protects a property from passing witches! – and guests can have their names carved by the owner, on request – what a wonderful and permanent way to remember holiday memories and in turn be remembered.

Off to to the left is a generous and well-equipped kitchen with dining area. Charming and practical, you’ll love using the Rayburn cooker for lazy breakfasts and to cook superb local fare. Granite work surfaces and a Belfast sink complete the look.

When it’s time for bed, head upstairs to the first floor. There’s a charming double with brass bed and a twin bedroom – both rooms have en-suite shower rooms with a shower, basin and WC. Front-facing, they have equally lovely views of the village green.

To the second floor is a demi-landing with two comfortable armchairs, a table and books – an ideal spot to read the kids’ bedtime stories or catch a quiet moment to yourself. Nearby is a third double bedroom and twin with bunks for the children. For sublime relaxation, head for the house bathroom and its freestanding bath nestled beneath traditional beams and with original stone walls – bliss!

Outside, a good size gravelled garden with a large stone table, chairs and BBQ provides a welcoming place to relax and dine al fresco in the warmer months. Wow! There’s even a large table tennis for the young at heart, but who will win?

On the days when you fancy a treat , head next door to The Wheatsheaf, a smart and renowned gastro-pub with elegant dining and a wonderful bar with oak floors and a Yorkshire range. Egton is a glorious village, one of the prettiest in the North York Moors, and there are many lovely walks in the immediate vicinity. Why not strike out on foot to either nearby Sleights or Grosmont village, travelling back via train to Egton.

The historic fishing port of Whitby is a five minute drive. Here you’ll find lovely sandy beaches, the imposing Abbey ruins, Captain Cook Memorial Museum and plenty of old world charm. Be sure to sample the local fish and chips – they’re world-famous!

Wheatsheaf Cottage provides all the space you’ll need in a beautiful village location, yet within close proximity of some seriously stunning coastline. The best of both worlds!

The ancient fishing port of Whitby lies at the mouth of the River Esk and is ideally situated for exploring this beautiful part of Yorkshire, with its superb coastline and close proximity to the spectacular North York Moors. Whitby is a charming and atmospheric town of winding streets and hidden alleys, with a picturesque harbour, safe sandy beaches and of course the Abbey, reached by the famous 199 steps.
