The atmospheric streets feature a range of fine old buildings, including the church of St Columba with its impressive tower which contains a 17th-century letter from King Charles I thanking the Cornish people. The town is one of two places in the county where Hurling the Silver Ball is played on Shrove Tuesday and teams battle to possess the ball which ‘blesses' the beer consumed afterwards.
