Villa Fortunata is perfectly set-up for Mediterranean al fresco living, with the shady wooden pergola providing a rather grand outdoor dining space beside the pool. There’s a sun lounger for everyone so when it’s siesta time, pick your spot and take a truly Spanish break.

To discover Villa Fortunata’s ‘secret’ garden, go down the stone stairs next to the house. Follow the gravel path past Mediterranean plants and palms to a beautiful tiled bench and table. One of the best seats in the house for admiring the view, escape down here to read, sip afternoon drinks or just sit in the peace. Heaven.

For days out, there are two wonderful towns to visit. The smart market town of Moraira is only four kilometres from Villa Fortunata. A favourite with Spaniards and visitors alike, it also has two beaches. Or head inland about eight kilometres and explore Benissa. Its old quarter dates to the medieval times and is one of the oldest towns on the Costa Blanca.

Villa Fortunata enjoys a great location. You’re nestled in the picturesque hills above Moraira and your view exposes the lush greenery that this corner of Spain is renowned for. The thousands of hours of sunshine each year and cooling summer breeze allow fruit trees, almond trees, grapes, olives and pines to grow in abundance.

It’s just ten minutes in the car to Moraira. What was once a fishing village has developed into a popular and upmarket coastal town. The marina is the place for sleek-looking yachts, water sports and fabulous seafood restaurants. While away the afternoon people-watching and sampling locally caught fish. Local delicacies include paella-style rice dishes, calamari and monkfish.

Moraira’s two beaches are on either side of the town centre. Playa El Portet is the smaller and quieter of the two. Both beaches have golden sand and clear, calm waters to swim in. You’ll be well supplied with ice creams and restaurants during your visit.

For another day’s sightseeing, head inland from Villa Fortunata. Benissa is about eight kilometres uphill, with it’s centre reaching 275 metres above sea level. Moors and Christians settled here in the middle ages and the ancient town hall, market square and cobbled streets were renovated about forty years ago. It oozes rustic charm as you stroll around the old houses and shops. Stop off at a traditional Spanish bar for a tapas dish of a local delicacy or two. And be sure to try a glass of wine from the Jalon Valley.
