As far as holiday destinations go, Devon is certainly a pet-friendly pick. For starters, there’s the coasts. Home to two incredible coastlines, each one is bursting with dog-friendly beaches.
As if that wasn’t enough, Devon boasts above-average temperatures and below-average rainfall, making it a tropical paradise on the South West Coast Path. Away from the coast, Devon is home to more award-winning walking routes than almost anywhere else in Britain. Meaning you and your pooch will have lots to explore.A coast for every occasion
There’s something about beaches that makes our four-legged friends go barking mad. From splashing in the sea, digging up the sand and running through dunes, dogs not only see sandy beaches as a spot to lie back and relax but as their own personal playground.
Luckily, Devon offers two stretches of coast, each offering its version of seaside fun. The coast of North Devon faces the Atlantic, providing a rich and wild coast. Here, you’ll find foamy waters and rugged rocks - perfect for anyone with a hankering for watersports and mountain climbing. Underneath, South Devon faces the calmer English channel, where high and mighty cliffs peer down on 120 miles of coast and over 50 stunning beaches. Here, you’ll find soft waves that lap against golden sand - perfect to relax beneath the summer sun.Officially the best beach in Britain
Almost every beach in Devon deserves a shout out, but even amongst such stiff competition, one sandy spot stands out above the rest. Sat a short drive from Pickwell, Woolacombe Beach is the most highly decorated beach in Britain. As well as boasting numerous awards for cleanliness, popularity and all-round greatness, in 2015 this 3-mile swathe of silken sand was voted the best beach in the UK, the fourth-best in Europe and 13th best in the whole world!
Best of all, Woolacombe describes itself as ‘very dog-friendly’, with both you and your pooch welcome on most of its shores at any time of year. As if anyone would be cruel enough to deprive our four-legged friends of such top-shelf fun!Five areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty
While the coast is undoubtedly one of the most stunning spots in the UK, this county is at its most special once you move inland. Devon boasts a staggering five Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, more than almost anywhere else in England.
As if that wasn’t enough, this South West spot is also home to two national parks. Dartmoor, the larger of the two, is a whirlwind of granite hilltops and bright wildflowers. While stretching between Devon and Somerset, Exmoor National Park is a mystic landscape of moorland, woodland and legends. Of course, all this countryside means that Devon is bursting with walking routes. One of our very favourites is the Teign Gorge Circuit. Taking in the most beautiful parts of Dartmoor National Park, this circular route serves dramatic views of the steep Teign Gorge and the towering Castle Drogo - the last castle to be built in England.Holiday cottages for people with high expectations
