Best dog-friendly beaches in Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland’s coastline is blessed with wide sandy beaches and hidden coves. Here are some of the best for dog walkers:
- Portstewart Strand – a huge expanse of golden sand on the Causeway Coast, popular with dog walkers year-round. Managed by the National Trust, they request that dogs be kept on a lead at all times to prevent disturbing any cattle. Dogs are allowed to be let off the lead past post 10, so there’s plenty of opportunity for them to stretch their legs!
- Benone Beach – one of the longest beaches in Northern Ireland, stretching for 7 miles, with stunning views towards Donegal. Dogs are allowed on this beach for most of the year, with restrictions in place between June 1st and September 15th.
- Murlough National Nature Reserve – backed by dunes and views of the Mourne Mountains, this is a fantastic spot for lead walks with your dog. To protect birds and animal grazing areas, dogs must be kept on a lead at all times.
- Whiterocks Beach, Portrush – famous for its limestone cliffs and sea arches, with plenty of space for sandy strolls. Similar to Benone Beach, dogs are not allowed on the beach between June 1st and September 15th.
