The famous Hardwick Hall is 6 miles away and was built in the 1590s by ’Bess of Hardwick’, the second most powerful woman in England, after Queen Elizabeth I. Nearby the estate’s original water mill is still in operation and open to visitors, as is the Hardwick Inn, also built in the 16th century. Also popular with visitors is the semi-rural 17th-century mansion of Bolsover Castle, set high on a wooded hilltop looking west towards the heights of the wonderful Peak District.
A little further away you will find those Peak District delights, including Chatsworth House and the town of Matlock, as well as stunning countryside. Just a few miles away you can discover the historic market town of Chesterfield which acts as the gateway to the Peak District. Chesterfield is famous for its 14th century church with a crooked spire twisting from the centre. In nearby Nottinghamshire, visit Nottingham’s Castle or Sherwood Forest to go on a Robin Hood hunt! Nearby is Teversal, a small village in Nottinghamshire which is surrounded by the Teversal Trail Visitors Centre, offering great access to the Teversal and Pleasley trails network, perfect for enjoying a variety of walks and cycle routes.
