Within the hamlet of Staunton Harold is a garden centre and a choice of country pubs where you can enjoy some great local fayre. The neighbouring National Trust Calke Abbey is a must see, depicting the tale of the dramatic decline of a country house estate. There are many other historic houses and buildings to see in the wider area including National Trusts Stoneywell, Kedleston Hall, Sudbury Hall and Duffield Castle and Chatsworth House, Whatton House and Gardens and Melbourne Hall. In the northwest of Leicestershire and in the National Forest, close to the border of Derbyshire there are many places of interest including Ashby-de-la-Zouch, famous for its ruined 15th-century castle, Alton Towers for thrill seekers, Hicks Lodge, a great place to walk, cycle and spot some unique wildlife, or enjoy a paddle at the outdoor lido swimming pool at Hood Park.
