About this property

Situated in the heart of the traditional country town of Alston is this superb, stone-built cottage, Mill Race House. This cottage has been thoughtfully furnished over three floors, ready for a well-earned countryside break, ideal for families, friends or a mix of both. Wander into the sitting room to discover a cosy arrangement of sofas with a flat-screen TV, whilst just behind rests a feature dining table set for 12 people, so all guests can gather together for a home-style meal. During the warmer months make use of the conservatory, complete with a large corner sofa so you can put your feet up while getting lost in a good book, or head into the games room to challenge your loved ones to a game of pool. The kitchen is well-appointed with several modern appliances set within a sleek choice of units and work surfaces, so you can whip up a hearty feast or enjoy a morning coffee at the stylish breakfast bar. The ground-floor also has a shower room, so guests can freshen up for the day ahead. Climbing upstairs there are three wonderfully furnished doubles, one with a large en-suite bathroom for extra privacy and another spacious bathroom down the hall. Up to the second floor are two more bedrooms; a family room with a double and two singles, great for the younger children to be with their parents, along with a twin room, both featuring exposed beams and velux windows which offer views towards the fells. Alston is famed for being the highest market town above sea-level, offering scenic views, unique shops, inviting pubs, and the Heritage & Transport museum for a fantastic range of historical transport displays which provide an insight into the life gone by in this delightful town. Just outside the town, you can find a golf course, the Epiacum Roman Fort, and Killhope Lead Mining Museum which offer tours of an old mine. For those wishing to explore the area on two wheels, cyclists should take advantage of the Pennine Way which passes through the town and is also on the C2C Cycle Route. The surrounding North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty offers plenty of breathtaking waterfalls and scenic fells, including the nearby Cross Fell which is the highest peak in the area and offers views of the Lake District National Park. Take a day trip to the town of Penrith to explore the 14th century ruins of the castle, the local museum and the Thacka Beck Nature Reserve, as well as the shops, bars and eateries that the town has on offer. Mill Race House promises a holiday filled with happy memories.

High up in the North Pennines, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Alston claims to be the highest market town in England, being about 1000 feet above sea level. The town has a steep cobbled main street with a distinctive market cross, and many stone buildings dating from the 17th century. It is a bustling town, with a reputation for delicious locally made specialities such as Cumberland Mustard, and Alston Cheese.
