No smoking.. This Grade II listed semi-detached cottage, set back from the road, makes an ideal base for exploring this fascination part of 1066 country and features an attractive courtyard garden. Almost next door, there is a beautifully restored working windmill which gives the area its name and is the largest post mill in the country. Slightly further along the road is Lime Cross Nursery set in 28 acres of beautiful woodland and lakes where you can take a dip and also visit the world acclaimed Bedgebury National Pinetum. Enjoy breakfast at the café or pop in to a dining event, winetasting or cookery course. Don’t miss Herstmonceux Castle grounds, or the Observatory Science Centre, ideal for ages 7-17 years old with plenty of hands on activities, in the buildings once home to the Royal Greenwich Observatory. Nature lovers will enjoy the Pevensey Levels National Nature Reserve behind the shingle beach. Pevensey Castle, built by William the Conqueror on the walls of the old Roman fort is a great day out and Pevensey Bay is famously known for Williams landing in 1066. Also worth a visit is Bateman’s (National Trust), a 17th-century house located in Burwash, as is Drusillas Park a small zoo near to Alfriston. There is fishing available locally and as a momento of your holiday, why not take home a Sussex trug from The Truggery, loved by gardeners everywhere. Beach 6½ miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 300 yards.
