The first floor offers a master bedroom with zip and link bed, twin bedroom and single bedroom. There is also a family bathroom with bath and shower attachment, and there is a separate toilet. Wood Stanway lies under the Cotswold escarpment and was previously an Estate Village owned by Tewkesbury Abbey for 800 years then for 500 years by the Tracy family and their descendants. The Jacobean Stanway House is a mile away from Cotswold Way Cottage, and is open to the public seasonally; the Earls of Wemyss still live there. Thanks to its location, at the foot of the Cotswold escarpment, Stanway has been protected from many changes of the 20th century. It has seen the gradual restoration of the 18th century watergarden, probably designed by the greatest of British landscape gardeners, Charles Bridgeman. The formal Canal, on a terrace above the house, the striking Pyramid and eight ponds have been reinstated, and a single-jet fountain, at 300 feet the highest fountain in Britain and the highest gravity fountain in the world, has been added.
Winchcombe’s town centre has excellent pubs and restaurants, as well as good food shops and many independent stores. Whether you want to walk, cycle or drive, Cotswold Way Cottage is an ideal base for exploring the countryside. Visit nearby Sudeley Castle, renowned for its gardens and as the last resting place of Katherine Parr, the sixth and last wife of King Henry viii. The town also has a famous pottery, and the Great Western Railway restored steam railway operates through the seasons.
The celebrated gardens at Hidcote, and other National Trust properties such as Snowshill and Chastleton, are a short drive away. Then there are Cotswolds towns such as Broadway, Chipping Campden and Cirencester, with its Roman roots, to visit. Explore medieval Tewkesbury and its abbey. Cheltenham hosts national literature, music, science and jazz festivals, as well as horse racing. Stratford-upon-Avon, with its Royal Shakespeare Theatre, is also an easy drive away.
Road and rail communications are excellent with Junction 9 (M5) at Tewkesbury, Birmingham, Oxford and London within easy reach and regular train services to London Paddington from Evesham and Moreton-in-Marsh. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.
