I am not one for leaving bad reviews but really feel I had no choice here as the owner not only has no regard for his guest’s safety or cares if they have a comfortable stay, but he has ignored me and made me out to be a liar! The place is advertised as ‘luxury’. I can see how maybe it once was, as it’s thoughtfully decorated and it’s in a great location - however it’s tired and not in a great state of repair (dirty marks on the walls / damaged furniture etc). The whole place needs a thorough deep clean. The owner’s standard of cleanliness are simply not up to scratch, as even when I presented him with photos (filthy fridge seals / kitchen cupboards with food debris / mouldy bathroom tiles etc), he brushed it off as nothing. For me, a place being clean is one of the most important factors in a holiday rental and our whole party felt uneasy with how unclean it was - particularly the kitchen. We had a 2 nights stay and on our last night we returned to the property late at night to find a leak from the living room ceiling. It had damaged some of our things that were on the table and appeared to be coming from the ceiling light, which was extremely worrying. When raised with the owner, he brushed this off as nothing, as he did with all the other concerns I raised. Looking back at previous reviews, which I wish I’d done before booking, this is clearly an on going issue that hasn’t been resolved. The leak happens in heavy rain. Frankly, it’s an accident waiting to happen - it’s dangerous and shouldn’t be rented to guests until resolved!!

Prior to our stay we had noticed reviews going back to January indicating an issue with a leak through a light fixture above the dining table. Water and electricity mixing like this is a disaster waiting to happen, and many of the reviews mentioned that the owner was unresponsive about the issue, and that Sykes had failed to take any action. We contacted Sykes before our stay and explained that we were concerned about the condition of the property. They told us that it was a very serious concern but that there's a process to follow and that we need to turn up at the property and wait for the issue to actually start occurring, at which point they would act promptly to get us moved to other suitable lodgings. So we turned up at the property and you can tell that it was a nice place at one time, but frankly, it's turned into a bit of a dive. Cracks in many of the windows, even a fully broken section in the front room that has been stuck back on with sellotape, cracked floor tiles everywhere, ants in the dining area, mold on the bathroom ceiling, doors that lock themselves for no reason, freezer door hanging off, kitchen utensils and food prep area filthy. Under the bed sheets, the mattresses were similarly filthy, pretty sure one of us was bitten by something. Eventually, after some heavy rain, the main issue arose with the light. We contacted Sykes, who were actually shut as it was the evening but their automated message gave an out of hours number we could use. We called this number twice and reported the issue, but had no response. We then called Sykes the next day and they said this was absolutely unacceptable and that they would contact the owner immediately on our behalf. We later got an email to say they had been in touch with the owner. Nothing else happened... Feeling bitterly disappointed by this whole experience we checked out a little late (30 minutes), hoping to bump into the owner, which we did. I confronted him about the issues with the house and he refused to take any responsibility for anything. "It's an LED light so no one would have been electrocuted" he told me. What kind of logic is that? This man had an answer for everything and none of those answers made any sense. 8.1.4 of Sykes' own terms states that the owner will ensure that the Property is properly maintained, clean, tidy and in good repair at the start of the Holiday Period; Apparently the owner has never read these, but was very keen to point out the breach of our terms in that we were checking out late, to which we pointed that we had to spend 3 hours cleaning the kitchen on arrival. At this point he strongly implied that we were making it all up which really got under my skin and I raised my voice at him, which I'm not proud of, and later apologised for. I am a very reasonable person, but when you are taking people's money for a service, you need to take some level of responsibility for what you are providing. We had further discussions with Sykes, who made more promises, and then seem to have lost interest and dropped our case. It's no wonder the owner of the property kept telling us to take up the issue with Sykes, knowing full well that their customer support is like shouting into a void. Avoid Sykes Cottages. Avoid Marine Terrace.

We stayed at marine terrace for a weekend. On first arrival we were initially pleased with the house however problems began to arise the longer we were there. There are a number of broken tiles on the kitchen floor these are dangerous especially if you have a baby - you need shoes/slippers on whilst in the kitchen to avoid cutting your feet. Secondly there is a leak that comes through a light fitting above the dining table when it rains, it is not a small leak it is a big one. When I contacted Andrew about this he did not reply. On returning home I have contacted Sykes and have been informed because it is a health and safety issue they cannot resolve it - I do not understand that logic. There is a health and safety issue in one of the houses they are the booking agent for yet they do not wish to address it!
