Tyreman's Return is a charming and cosy cottage praised for its cleanliness and superb central location in Whitby. Guests appreciate its proximity to local attractions and the comfort of the beds. While some guests encountered issues with parking and boiler noise, the property's character and convenience largely contributed to enjoyable stays.
The majority of guests found the cottage to be clean and comfortable, with only one report of dust, cobwebs, and mould. The positive remarks on cleanliness from several reviews suggest that the property is generally well-kept.
The location is highly praised for being central and within walking distance to Whitby's main attractions. Despite some parking challenges, the convenience of the location is a standout feature.
Guests found the beds comfortable and the cottage cosy, although there were some comments about a firm bed and a noisy boiler. The overall sentiment is that the property provides a comfortable stay.
Facilities are adequate but several guests noted the need for more kitchenware, a working bathroom light switch, and better seating. Maintenance issues like the boiler and wallpaper were mentioned, indicating room for improvement.

Tyreman’s Return, 2 Abbey Inn Yard is a characterful Grade II listed 2 bedroom cottage steeped in history. This traditional fisherman’s cottage dating from around 1760 is off ancient Flowergate, known as Floresgate in the Doomsday Book. This quirky cottage offers contemporary living sleeping up to 4 people in a 3 storey property. It is located in a convenient and quiet yard situated off Flowergate on the west side of Whitby. There is a double bedroom on the first floor with a twin bedroom on the second floor. The wrought-iron gate at the entrance to the yard is located next to the Yorkshire Building Society (formerly an old Inn known initially as The Old Abby Inn which existed from at least 1794). Tyreman’s retains some lovely period features - the original beams, a working open Yorkshire Range ideal for those winter nights, sash windows and a coffin drop in the ground floor ceiling. You enter Tyreman’s up two shallow steps into an open-plan living space. Here there are two comfortable sofas in the lounge space, a flat screen TV with a DVD player and a mini sound system. The focal point for the family is the open hearth fireplace. A selection of paperbacks and DVD’s are provided. The compact kitchen provides all modern appliances: an electric oven, microwave, fridge and an electric hob set in black granite. In the dining area is a kitchen table with two settles seating 4 people. Heating is gas central heating with radiators throughout. One well-behaved dog is allowed to stay in the downstairs room but must not be allowed upstairs. Through the door to a narrow and curved staircase leads to the first floor. Here there is the charming double bedroom and a family bathroom. The second floor has a spacious twin bedroom along the length of the house, this delightful room also has a TV and DVD player available. The magnificent cruck beams do reduce headspace at the sides of the room, but the apex does provide standing room. A stairgate is fitted should this be required. The location of Tyreman’s Return is ideal for visiting the many and varied attractions that Whitby offers. You can park outside Abbey Inn Yard for 1 hour using a parking disc for unloading. Thereafter parking is available at St Hilda’s Terrace car park which is 5 minutes walk from the cottage, or Cliff Terrace or on West Cliff. All are pay and display (free from November to March). Just up from the cottage on Flowergate are two Parks – Little Park where dogs are permitted and Pannett Park housing a Local History Museum. There are a variety of restaurants and cafes on Flowergate (and even a dog bakery!). The quayside and swing bridge are at the foot of Flowergate where you meet the heart of Whitby and your adventure continues.
