Probably the most northerly house in mainland Scotland, The House of The Northern Gate has a stunning location on Dunnet head with views over the Pentland Firth to Orkney, with direct access to the owner’s sandy beach, just a short walk from the house.
The House of The Northern Gate enjoys a breathtaking setting on Dunnet Head, with sweeping views across the Pentland Firth to Orkney and direct access to the owner’s private sandy beach - just a short stroll from the house. Ideal for peaceful beachcombing, the beach also lies near the impressive waves and wide sands of nearby Dunnet Bay, perfect for surfing enthusiasts.
This traditional Scottish mansion, recently awarded 5 stars by VisitScotland, has been beautifully restored and upgraded to offer luxury accommodation that remains warm and inviting. While the character of its 1800s architecture has been lovingly preserved, modern comforts have been thoughtfully integrated - most bedrooms now feature en suite facilities. The house can comfortably accommodate up to 20 guests (maximum 18 adults), making it ideal for large family gatherings, special celebrations, or wedding parties.
New for 2025, guests can also enjoy a dedicated gym and studio space, fully equipped with free weights, a rowing machine, and a Peloton bike - perfect for staying active even in the remotest corners of Scotland.
The location is unforgettable, offering direct beach access and 1,800 acres of heather-covered estate to explore, including dramatic cliff walks leading to the iconic Dunnet Head lighthouse. Wildlife enthusiasts will be delighted by the chance to spot puffins, arctic skuas, storm petrels, guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, and more. Keep an eye on the sea - you may glimpse dolphins, sea otters, seals, or even the elusive killer or minke whales. Sea safaris can also be arranged from nearby John O’Groats.
With its vast open skies, Caithness is a striking and remote holiday destination. Whether you're exploring the North Coast 500, cycling quiet back roads, or hiking forest trails, there's much to discover. The area’s royal connections run deep - it's said the Queen Mother decided to purchase the Castle of Mey after glimpsing it from the window of what’s now known as the Mey Bedroom. You can even find the "Royal" picnic bench beside the tranquil River Thurso, where you’re invited to "rest and be thankful" - just as Her Majesty once did.
