Best dog-friendly walks in North Wales

Wales Coast Path

Best for: Sea views
Distance: 12.9km
Time to complete: Four hours

The 870-mile Wales Coast Path runs the whole length of the Welsh coastline. In the North of Wales, dogs and their humans can enjoy views of the Bay of Ceredigion from Abersoch through Llanbedrog and ending in Pwllheli. The route is straightforward underfoot and takes in beautiful beaches, charming villages and magical headlands as the path clings to the Welsh Coast.

Llyn Peninsula

Best for: Wild exploration
Distance: 10.3km
Time to complete: Three and a half hours

The Llyn Peninsula, also known as 'Snowdon's Arm', is home to many public footpaths, dog walks and hiking routes. At just over 10km, the route around the 490m-high summit of Gyrn Goch and neighbouring Gyrn Ddu offers walkers the chance to explore these lowly coastal hills. But, with wild surroundings and poorly marked footpaths, this is a challenging walk best suited to fine navigators.

Newborough National Nature Reserve and Forest

Best for: Family fun in the forest
Distance: 7km
Time to complete: Three hours

The Corsican pine trees that make up Newborough National Nature Reserve and Forest, on the Isle of Anglesey, are a haven for wildlife including the rare native red squirrel. Follow the Saint, Sand and Sea Trail from the beach car park through the forest, dunes and over to the island of Ynys Llanddwyn at low tide.

Llanberis Path

Best for: Climbing Snowdon
Distance: 14.4km
Time to complete: Five - six hours

There are many walking routes to choose from around Snowdon and across Snowdonia National Park. Llanberis Path runs parallel to the mountain railway and is regarded as one of the easiest routes to the peak but is a challenge for only the fittest dogs as it can be rocky underfoot and climbs 3,200 feet!

Great Orme

Best for: Seaside summit
Distance: 2.4km
Time to complete: 90 minutes

Llandudno's 'mini mountain', Great Orme, is a limestone headland overlooking the Victorian seaside resort. Great Orme Country Park has a choice of scenic, waymarked walking routes up to the peak. The 2.4km-long Happy Valley Trail is the longest of the paths and offers beautiful views out to sea and down to the bustling town of Llandudno below.

Best dog-friendly beaches in North Wales

Aberffraw Dunes and Traeth Mawr Beach

Best for: Exploring the sand dunes

Aberffraw Dunes and Traeth Mawr Beach is an open stretch of sand in Aberffraw Bay, less than 10 miles from Anglesey. The beach is the perfect place for paddling and playing fetch. Low sand dunes are set back from the waves lapping on the shore and lead all the way to the village which boasts shops and eateries.

Harlech Beach

Best for: Golden sands

The golden sands of Harlech Beach stretch for four miles along the Bay of Ceredigion with views inland to Snowdonia's peaks. The beach - just north of Llanfair and Llandanwg - is fringed by grassy sand dunes with Harlech Castle (a World Heritage Site) jutting out of the landscape nearby.

Talacre Beach

Best for: Lighthouse landmark

Talacre Beach stretches around the northern tip of Wales, just outside Prestatyn and across the River Dee from the Wirral. The 18m-tall decommissioned Point of Ayr Lighthouse, dating back to 1776, is the key landmark here but the beach is also the ideal spot for a run alongside your canine chum or even a game of frisbee.

Rhyl Beach

Best for: Low tide

Rhyl Beach is a two-mile stretch of sand that grows even vaster as the tide goes out to reveal a wide beach scattered with small pools of water. This traditional seaside spot is also home to a promenade complete with amusement arcades, crazy golf and an aquarium. Dogs are welcome outside of peak season (May to September) so if your pet wants to come too make sure you check the calendar and the tides!

Colwyn Bay Beach

Best for: Activities for the whole family

The three-mile Colwyn Bay Beach - also known as Rhos-on-Sea - is a great place to pitch up the loungers and spend the day paddling, fishing and swimming. Dogs can play on the beach while the family enjoy watersports. There are also walking routes and cycling paths nearby. Part of the beach operates dog restrictions from May to September so look out for the signs.

Things to do in North Wales

Plas yn Rhiw

Best for: Beautiful gardens

Plas yn Rhiw is a beautiful manor house and ornamental gardens dating back to the 16th century. Just outside Rhiw, the National Trust property overlooks the bay and is home to a quaint tea room serving snacks and treats. While there are dog restrictions in the house and gardens, your pooch is welcome to join you to follow the pretty paths weaving through the lower woodland.

Llanberis Lake Railway

Best for: A relaxing ride

For a relaxing ride through Snowdonia National Park, look no further than the charming steam trains that trundle along the Llanberis Lake Railway. The locomotives chug five miles past Dolbadarn Castle, through Padarn Country Park and past Llanberis' twin lakes. Dogs can ride too for just £1 per pooch.

Sygun Copper Mine

Best for: Underground adventures

If your cheeky canine is a keen digger then Sygun Copper Mine is bound to be up his street. Here, the whole family can take a glimpse inside a Victorian mine. The self-guided tour takes in three levels of caving systems connected by steep staircases so this is only suitable for dogs who are comfortable clambering up and down steps.

Bala Watersports

Best for: Getting wet and wild!

Bala, a small market town in Gwynedd, is home to Bala Watersports - an outdoor adventure based on the town's lake. The family-run firm offers lots of fun activities from archery and abseiling to windsurfing and sailing. But the best part - dogs are welcome to join in too! Your pooch can hop in a canoe or join you for a paddleboard so no one feels left out.

Criccieth Castle

Best for: Stepping back in time

Criccieth Castle commands a seat high on the cliffs with views across Cardigan Bay. The ruins - built by Llywelyn the Great in the 13th century and later reduced to ruins by Owain Glyndŵr. The historic fortress is now a popular visitor attraction thanks to its fascinating past and beautiful views. Dogs on leads are welcome to explore the ground floor levels with their owners.

What our customers say about their holidays

We had a lovely time at Cut Moch!

We visited as a couple with our two doggies and had a fantastic week exploring Wales for the first time. The cottage has lots of places to visit which are within a short drive away, but we also ventured further up to the coast at Rhyl. The welcome gifts were very much appreciated, we'd recommend a trip to the shop just down the road for more Welsh cakes, as these were delicious! The cottage was very comfortable, the couch is different to the pictures and is much better! We had plenty of room for the four of us, and throws were provided so that the dogs could cuddle in on the sofa. Everything in the cottage is of quality and provided to a high standard. We felt there was a couple of items in the kitchen that would have made practicality easier, such as normal size cereal bowls, plastic cups for hot tub etc but we managed just fine! The underfloor heating was a massive bonus as we took advantage of the washing machine after muddy walks, so were able to dry our clothes very easily by having the heating on in just one room only. The hot tub was a very welcome addition after long walks through the day! It is a good size that would easily fit 4. You can tell that the hot tub is well maintained, it was very clean which was reassuring as we've stayed elsewhere previously where this has been a concern. We had an issue with the electrics in the kitchen one night, and we had a solution within 5 minutes of messaging the property owners! I couldn't fault their response at all with this, they made sure we were still able to access everything we needed and had a repair completed the next morning. They were on hand for anything at all that we needed, which was much appreciated. Overall the cottage was immaculate and felt very homely. There are a couple of bits that will need attended to soon (limescale in kettle and on shower head in en suite), but these are expected over time and very easily maintained. We'd love to come back and do more exploring of Wales! Thank you for a lovely stay.

The barn itself has been built to a very high standard and the interior design is gorgeous.

Under floor heating kept us cosy, and the log burner added a perfect touch. We got extremely lucky with the weather which was originally scheduled for rain but instead we had sunshine all weekend so didn’t need to use the burner much. We received a welcome pack and so did our pup which included a little blanket so he could hop up on the sofa with us for a cuddle. We fully utilised the hot tub at every chance we could, in the evenings we turned all the barn lights off along with the hot tub lights and looked up at the stars, it’s was beautiful and we saw 2 shooting stars! The facilities in the barn are perfect, lots of cutlery and cooking utensils - there wasn’t anything additionally that we needed. Oh and the mattresses on the bed are bloody wonderful! We had such a lovely sleep each night which was just what we needed after all the walking we done! We visited the waterfalls which were breath taking, and walked to the top of the mountain behind the barn to watch the sunset. The barn location is very isolated which was exactly what we wanted, a hidden gem in what felt like the middle of nowhere! Only 2 other barns and the main house surround you, but the barn has been very well secluded around the hot tub area so you feel very comfortable. Cannot fault this barn at all, it was simply perfect - hats off to the owners, they have done a fantastic job! A+++++

We have just returned from a week here.

What a beautiful place to stay, the views are stunning, perfect for star gazing. Our dog Mia loved the walks around and was safe in the garden giving one less worry, and one happy pooch. The hot tub in the garden is perfect especially to relax after long days out. The property was clean and homely. With little treats for our arrival even for our dog. There is a folder they have put together with history of the property and farm, how to use things In the house, the best bit is all the information on surrounding walks and places to see, which we made use of. The owners have really put their heart and sole into this and are easily contactable for any need. A special thank you to Rachel the housekeeper who we briefly met as we left, she found a couple of items of clothing we had left, she messaged me within a couple of hours of leaving and posted them back the same day. We would definalty come back here and would highly recommend this place to anyone. Thank you so much for giving us the perfect week away. The Johnsons x

Another brilliant stay at Plas Moelfre Hall Barns this time in Cut Moch.

We absolutely love this place and feel like it’s our home away from home. Always a warm welcome from Lowri, Family and not to forget the well behaved Freddie. Some really nice walks in the local area and surrounding towns. This is our second time staying and we easily find new things to do daily and never get over the view of the beautiful setting and the wildlife. The welcome pack has some information around local walks and activities which is really helpful. The history of the barn is also a brilliant read and makes you appreciate how much work and effort has gone into Cut Moch. It really is the most cosy quiet peaceful place to just switch off from the world. The Hot Tub is a lovely way to end the day and amazing for star gazing then you have the added treat of going back inside to the log burner. We can’t recommend this place enough. We will most certainly be returning, hopefully sooner this time as we miss it already. Jodie, James and Alfie x

We had a lovely week at Cut Moch, the views are amazing and we had the privilege of seeing the lovely lambs which were beginning to be born.

Some beautiful countryside surrounding the cottage with NT properties Chirk Castle and Erddig been fairly close to and lots of places to walk. Nice and safe for our escape artist Border Terrier. The cottage was spotless and warm with the underfloor heating, we were able to wash our clothes and dry them with ease. Not something we normally do but as the weather was wet and we did some pretty muddy walks, it helped. It is private and you are not troubled by being overlooked given that there are 2 other properties on site plus the farmhouse. The first couple of days we were able to walk in the field opposite the cottage (this is available along with Gyrn Moelfre the mountain behind the house), but the sheep (in lamb) were moved to that field in the middle of the week and we felt it would be wrong to walk in the field in view of the lambs and we didn't want our dog upsetting them. We would certainly like to return and missing it very much right now!!
