South Shields, a seaside resort town on the Tyne estuary, is a short drive from Newcastle upon Tyne. Heavy industries like coal mining and glass manufacturing took over South Shields' long-established shipbuilding industry in the 19th century, when it was still a part of County Durham. With its Blue Flag beach, it has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. The South Shields Museum, the Ocean Beach Pleasure Park, and the Souter Lighthouse are just a few of the town's many attractions, which include 76 steps to the top of the Souter Lighthouse for breathtaking views. You may take picturesque walks along the coast, taking in the stunning cliffs and rocky bays, or visit the South Marine and North Marine Parks, both of which are great places to spend an afternoon.

The views and beech were amazing. A 10 second walk back into the grotto when we didn't want to cook was very welcoming. A couple of pints playing cards watching the waves crash in from a lovely warm cave you don't get to do every day. The whole place was dog friendly. The staff are an absolute credit to themselves, nothing was to much trouble, the chefs take a real pride in their trade, I am now a converted fish eater, they all created a real family atmosphere. Thankyou all so much Martin, Julie, Humphrey.
