Dog Friendly Whitstable Holiday Cottages

Your dog will love a cottage holiday in Whitstable

Just short drive from Canterbury and a stick’s throw from Herne Bay, Whitstable is one of the most beautiful holiday destinations on the north Kent coast. Book one of our dog-friendly cottages in Whitstable and you’ll find yourself in the perfect position to explore the best the area has to offer. From sandy beaches and country walks, to historic towns and rugged ruins, your dog will find plenty to keep them occupied!

For a taste of the traditional British seaside, take your pooch down to Whitstable West Beach. You won’t find much in the way of beachside entertainment; this is a quiet stretch of shingle, almost completely unspoilt and ready to offer your four-legged friend a variety of scents to follow and holes to dig! It’s open to dogs all year round, giving you the opportunity for strolling in the sunshine or taking a bracing walk in the winter.

With all that sea air, you’re likely to work up an appetite! Whitstable has some superb places to eat, where your furry friend will be as welcome as you are. For a quiet cuppa or a light bite, the Windy Corner Stores is just the ticket. Your pooch can sit inside, while you grab a coffee and one of their homemade cakes. Whitstable is also home to that rare thing: a restaurant that accommodates dogs! Birdies Bistro offers casual dining in relaxed surroundings. Afterwards, pop into The Old Neptune for a cheeky tipple by the sea.

Dog-friendly things to do

Whitstable’s location makes it an outstanding base from which to have a sniff around north Kent. If you’re not sure where to begin, we’ve put together some of our favourite dog-friendly destinations:

Richborough Roman Fort

Travel east by car for about 30 minutes and you’ll find Richborough. Thought to be where the Romans first landed in Britain, and where they finally left from too, there are ancient walls, expansive grounds and even the remains of an amphitheatre. Dogs must be on leads.

Spa Valley Railway

Tunbridge Wells is only an hour away and where you can hop aboard the Spa Valley Railway. You and your doggy chum can ride a steam train, which will take you through the stunning scenery of High Weald. With options to dine on board and some excellent stop-offs along the route, it’s an easy way to spend a day.

Duncan Down

Just a short walk from the centre of town, Duncan Down is the perfect place for your dog to let off some steam! Covering over 60 acres, it’s a patchwork of habitats, from woods and grassland, to heaths and wetlands. Designated a Green Flag park, you can expect to find some of Kent’s most stunning scenery in this hidden gem of a spot.

What our customers say about their holidays

We were 4 adults, 2 of them over 80/ 90 (+ 2 dogs) staying for 12 days in May.

We liked Whitstable, its quirky high street with surprising range of shops, pubs/ restaurants etc, laid back and slightly green/ alternative vibe. Local walks to Prospect Fields or beach and shops convenient. Foxes + cubs on golf course, herring gulls nesting on roof and plenty of bird song- all good. Clifton Road was narrow and rough, parking challenging at times but we always found somewhere within walking distance. At first glance Newden Cottage impressed with decent amount of space and light, 2 cleverly designed bathrooms with good easy- access showers, cupboard with washing machine in the downstairs one, both wash basins too tiny. Nice looking kitchen with double doors to garden, big dining table, 3 decent bedrooms. Loads of clean towels but no spare bedding. Shampoo and hand wash/ shower gel provided but toilet paper lasted only a few days. My elderly parents managed the stairs ok but struggled with the heavy sash windows. Storage space eg for shoes would have been welcome, as would be a larger door mat behind the entrance door. Had we not been lucky with weather keeping floors etc dry + clean would have been tricky. There's a step along the upstairs corridor to bathroom which would benefit from a safety light at night. A few convenient night lights were found elsewhere. A welcome hamper was a nice touch, as was a box of dog things. Small enclosed garden gets some sunshine all day. Decking with peeling paint and outside furniture needed a clean, particularly the cushions which were damp and dirty in a box outside, possibly untouched since last year. Fake turf... Useful washing line. Clean inside on the whole, although dust and dirt here and there, eg in kitchen drawers, windows + -frames, shower drain. The outside table wobbled and a broken- off piece was on floor. The kitchen was beautiful but with limited worktop and drainage space. The owner kindly provided more crockery after I mentioned that we struggled a bit despite running dishwasher every day. The only (non- stick) frying pan was scratched and either very dirty or corroded- owner provided replacement. We avoided other also scratched smaller non- stick pans and used a brand new huge stainless steel pot. Unlike previous reviewers we didn't find kitchen equipment extensive. We did appreciate being able to bring 2 dogs- we asked, obviously. We booked relatively late, needing somewhere suitable for elderly parents and 2 dogs, based on positive reviews and careful study of available info. It's not a cheap area anyway but all in all, in our opinion, it was too expensive for what it is. Sorry.

The property generally was quite good but with a few problems.

    1. The wooden slats under the mattress were damaged causing the mattress to fall though them the first time I used it. I managed to patch them up temporarily. 2. The bedding was awful. All polyester- causing my wife and I to sweat profusely, made worse by the warm weather. We ended up buying a new cotton duvet cover, sheet and pillowcases. 3. The shower was excellent (one of the best I have ever used) but the shallowness of the shower tray meant I had to keep checking to see if it was overflowing. 4. Wi-Fi. Couldn't get it to work on any of our devices. Maybe it was my ineptitude. Maybe it was the complicated password which had been written with amendments added to it. Very frustrating. I gave up with it. 5. The Ninja had not been washed/cleaned prior to our arrival. There was a significant amount of oil and food residue left in it. I cleaned the inside containers myself but they were pretty grubby and needed soaking, suggesting to me they had not been cleaned properly for some time. 6. The house itself was good apart from the above niggles. The location was fantastic with easy walking access to the beach, Whitstable and Tankerton. The bus stopping outside was a real bonus allowing us to travel to Canterbury and Herne Bay. 7. Sykes. I didn't like doing business with the rental company. I thought the tone of their emails to be abrupt bordering on threatening. I was surprised by the booking fee. They charged me for a pet which I did not request. I won't book through them again.

We really enjoyed our stay in Whitstable.

The house is well proportioned and in a good state of repair. The two negatives we would like to report are: 1) the garden is in a deplorable state. Judging by the size of the weeds it hasn't received any attention for some time. In advance of our visit it hadn't even been swept. I hope it gets sorted before future guests arrive. 2) cooking pots. There were 3 saucepans, all perfectly serviceable though a larger one would have been useful. However, there was no oven proof casserole dish - there were 3 other pan lids (in addition to the above) which presumably once fitted pots/pans that are no longer there. We wanted to cook several times during our stay and this pot shortage severely limited our options. Will leave it to you to decide whether to publish these comments.

Generally everything was OK, but there were a few points that if improved would make the experience so much better.

The information book was lacking and inconsistent, some info on white goods in the book other info in drawers, no local info but there was a menu was for Xmas! knives so blunt they should have been thrown away, however, during the week we discovered new set hidden in a drawer, only 8 coat hangers between 3 bedrooms, luckily M&S in Canterbury gave us more. Listing is for 6 but no pan or pot big enough to hold food for 6. Outside table and chairs only suitable for 4. BBQ but no metal tools. Inside of oven needed cleaning, there was no grill pan. Ironing board cover not fit for purpose. Sweeping brush needing fixing to handle. Toilet brushes and holders needed cleaning or replacing. WiFi speed was abysmal and unsecure.

A lovely house, really clean and comfortable and with (almost) everything you need.

Despite the train line running opposite the front of the house, it was extremely quiet and the trains were no bother at all - quieter than any traffic would be. We found a parking space with no problem and enjoyed being able to walk around the corner to the town, its shops, restaurants and pubs and down to the harbour / the beach. We really enjoyed our stay here and would happily stay again. Small additions to the kitchen equipment and some pegs for washing would make it complete.
