There is a bowling green adjacent to the Downe Arms public house (which is dog and walker friendly and has won accolades for its real ales) and a cricket pitch and children's play area close to the River Esk. There are many footpaths and bridleways - all providing superb views of the surrounding countryside. Castleton is a short walk from the North York Moors Danby Visitor Centre from where a number of walks start and local arts and crafts events are held. Castleton is a thriving community which has ample provision for visitors and boasts several shops, public houses, tea-rooms, a post office, garage and a bank. The North Yorkshire Moors National Park Centre is also nearby and it has a train station on the Middlesbrough to Whitby line.

The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline making it a haven for walkers.
