Dog Friendly Cottages In Newport

Found on the south coast of Wales, the city of Newport offers plenty for holidaymakers to enjoy while on a cottage holiday here. However, its small size means that it is still easily walkable; perfect for exploring under your own steam.

If culture and history are what you're after, you can visit the city's imposing cathedral, or the museum and art gallery which has all manner of artefacts from this area's past. The covered market is also worth a visit, not only does it have a great selection of fresh produce, but it has been a staple of life here for over 150 years. Outside the city centre there is a rich choice for day trips; choose from the National Roman Legion Museum, the Newport Wetlands Reserve or even the spectacular Tredegar House. For a change of pace, take a day trip to Cardiff.

Castle coach house is so lovely, beautifully finished with lots of space and light.

There is a great utility / boot room which helps keep all the mud out of the main house. The bedrooms upstairs have great proportions and yet feel very cosy, plenty of bathrooms! The open plan kitchen, dining and living space gives everyone the space they need. Sofas and chairs are comfortable. The different lighting options helps to make the mood right in the evening. Lots of classic furniture and trinkets to keep it feeling homely and interesting. The kitchen is well equipped. There are lots of games to be used. We absolutely loved the house. Couple of things to work on: maintenance of the washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, extractor fans etc is probably due. The sitting room area could do with a picture or two or a wooden dresser with the tv inside a cabinet, and get rid of the fender which takes up space and looks a bit odd. The enclosed garden wasn’t enclosed as the gate is broken. It’s also unfortunately a muddy bog which may be tricky to figure out as it’s at the bottom of a hill. I felt a bit sad being right next to lovely garden areas of the castle which have private signs on them all so you can’t use them.

After receiving a phone call regarding the late entry time I did expect the cleaner had time to clean throughout.

We arrived after 5 pm as requested due to an issue with the cleaner. After a 6 hour drive we were keen to get in having 2 young children in our party. All beds were clean also bathrooms , Kitchen was Ok. All other areas were really dusty and the house was full of cobwebs, I live in an old cottage so know cobwebs can be an issue, but the cleaner had just been in ! We had to clear brambles to make the garden safe for the children, the games room had not been looked at for weeks, dead insects all over the floor. The property is lovely but very hot(having the Aga) and noisy near the road and windows need to be open. Maybe the owner should review the cleaner they have, an unusual quirky property with so much potential. Refuse /recycle facilities not in place, we tried but had no recycle sacks. Vacuum totally fuzzed up and not maintained. We still had a lovely family holiday in beautiful Pembrokeshire.

I was disappointed that the property had not been cleaned prior to our arrival and was not to the same standard of other holiday properties I have rented and expected.

There were cleaning products available, so I started my holiday cleaning the bathrooms! Unfortunately there was no vacuum cleaner or broom available to sweep the floors. Important when the property allows dogs to stay and it is expected to leave the property in the same state as arrival . I reported this the next morning at the local office. Unfortunately, no vacuum arrived during our stay, as was organised. It would be helpful to have more information in the 'useful information' folder on recycling/rubbish and how to leave the property on departure. The property did have a lot of extraneous objects, papers, letters etc., cluttering up the window shelves and drawers of furniture. This is a lovely property and we enjoyed our stay. It just needs a good sort through, removing unnecessary items and make sure the essentials are cleaned prior to clients arriving.

Overall it was a good stay, the cottage had many good points but there are a lot of improvements which could be made.

Good points: the location is great, ample parking, good secure garden for dogs, warm tap outside to wash down the dog, beds were very comfortable, bathrooms were nicely done Improvements: the house was freezing when we arrived and took 2 days to warm up. There is a lot of unnecessary, old, and dirty furniture downstairs and in the bedrooms which were full of junk and are unusable for guests. The lounge furniture was not comfortable, needs better sofas and armchairs. One of the dining chairs was broken and could be dangerous. The kitchen was fairly well stocked but some of the equipment was not good, eg frying pans with the coating coming off. The hoover was useless, we tried to clear up after muddy boots and dogs but it was hopeless. The cottage wasn’t very clean when we arrived, there were items of clothing left from previous guests.

  • Pamela - Verified booking

The property is a bit tired, but I expected that, although the collection of and sometimes mouldy and dusty ‘decorative’ objects detract from the decor rather than enhance, as do the random clothing and detritus found in drawers.

We found crumbs in the grill pan and we definitely left the tins and pans in a better state than we found them. We found lots of random food, nearly empty jars etc in pantry cupboard so removed them to the top shelf. The kitchen sink was very off-putting and needs replacing and I would suggest the purchase of some decent pillows! The downstairs bedroom is ok for children but definitely not big enough for two adults to share. We thoroughly enjoyed Newport and the property is well placed but the interior could be so much better with more thought. Access was tricky and one of our party was nearly mown down by a van on the narrow road, so children need close supervision once outside the boundary. All in all I would recommend for a family but don’t expect luxury and you won’t be disappointed.
