Rhayader is a quaint Welsh marketplace stocked with cafes, pubs, restaurants, services, and specialty shops selling everything from antiques to tea. Plus a large swimming pool and a weekly livestock market at the recreation centre. On the outskirts of town, the Red Kite Feeding Station is a fantastic destination. Rhayader is the starting point of the Wye River and features the beautiful reservoirs and dams of the Elan and Claerwen Valleys. There are numerous hiking and biking paths in the Elan Valley (you can rent bicycles in nearby Rhayader), as well as a visitor centre with a café and a playground for the kids. The incredible variety of wildlife preserves in this region has earned it the nickname "Wildlife Centre of Wales." The region is also a great place to go pony trekking. See the annual Spring Festival, Royal Welsh Agricultural Show, and Winter Fair in Builth Wells. Another option is to drive the scenic 34 miles to the Welsh coast.
