What our customers say about their holidays

  • Rebecca - Verified booking

My husband and our 3 teen daughters and our border terrier had a lovely week at Crozier.

Location was perfectly splendid! Views were to die for from every window, absolutely loved the big picture window in the kitchen overlooking the garden and the mountains. Peaceful setting. Cottage was bright and airy. Heating was great on chilly days. Good selection of dvds, books and games. Everything was in working order. Log burner was very fancy and I bet would be a treat in the winter time. We unpacked our bags while waiting for our Tesco delivery at 5pm (have always bought our own essentials for cottage holidays, never expected the owners to provide toilet rolls etc by the way, as noticed on reading previous reviews haha!) and then went to Tweedies for our tea. We caught the bus at the end of the lane some days to visit surrounding villages. We all adored the little stroll into the village of a morning for coffee and evenings for a drink, such a bonus to also have The Swan just up the road also for a glass or two! We did feel that Crozier could do with a bit of a spruce, such as a hand towel in the cloakroom, cleaning of inside dressing tables and wardrobes, old yellow quilts and pillows stored in wardrobes aren't appealing to the eye, wash the pink throws on the single beds, wash the cushions on the bedroom chair, clean the double bed headboard, clean the skirting boards and doors throughout, throw out the old throws on the bunk beds and sofas and invest in fresh ones, replace the broken mirror in the garden because that is a lovely feature and our border boy would sit and look at himself each morning haha, maybe make use of the summer house with seating and pictures. This is all constructive criticism, we really did enjoy our stay and funny enough we noticed a lot of paintings and flower pots are exactly what we have here in our own home! We asked Sykes if we could have some drinking glasses for juice etc, as there were only 2 and we are a family of 5, but unfortunately Sykes kept emailing back to say they were too busy to help. So we bought our own and took them home with us. We have been renting holiday cottages in the Lakes for over 30 years well before our children were born and Crozier is now one of our favourites. We have booked for next Easter! Can't wait

    Literally gutted!

The cottage on your website is absolutely stunning. When you get there the outside was gorgeous but as soon as you get in it all went done hill :( the whole place was smelly. It was like wet dog everywhere you went and it was dirty… there was dog hairs in lumps on the carpet. The kitchen was Very untidy and all the cupboards and everything was dirty. Before we could use anything we put them in the dishwasher. Which is something we definitely shouldn’t of had to do. A little disappointed with the quality of the bedding and the towels in a cottage priced at the amount we paid I would’ve thought the cottage would have quite luxury items it really does let the side down. And two toilet rolls for seven nights with five people is definitely ridiculous. We just found ourselves stocking up on things that should’ve already been in the cottage more dishwasher tablets, clothes, toilet rolls and oven gloves are a must which I burnt my arm on the oven. With it been a massive time with Covid and everything you asked us to do beforehand getting to the cottage was just a really big disappointment to see how dirty and smelly it was considering other people would’ve been there and hygiene and cleanliness is a massive thing at the moment. The tumble dryer doesn’t work at all. The Hoover when you hoover the house makes the house smell like wet dog it’s absolutely disgusting the Hoover it definitely needs looking at. The last thing I’d like to mention is The cottage is advertised with a leisure centre or leisure facilities should I say. And when we got there at the leisure facilities they told us that they haven’t been letting anybody from cottages come for the last year so that was something else that was advertised that we couldn’t actually use. Really disappointed with our first holiday with the amount of money we’ve paid as well. I was going to wait till Monday to phone the office but would like some sort of communication as I’m really not happy with the standard and what we got for that weeks holiday that we’ve saved up for.

I had a lovely stay at Pine Cottage.

The cottage has all the facilities you need. The bed in the main room was very comfortable and the bedroom decoration was light and fresh. The shower pressure was just perfect and there were lots of towels available. I had great weather so didn’t get to utilise the fire, but you have everything you need if you want the fire on. The kitchen has all the necessities, kettle, toaster, microwave, fridge with freezer compartment, oven, plates, mugs, cutlery etc. There is a nice selection of books available in the living room and the high street has a borrow a book service too. The cottage is suitable for a dog, but as downstairs is quite snug I’d say a medium dog. You’d need to be careful letting the dog out in the courtyard as the alley way leads directly to the high street so they could make a run for it! There is a field behind the high street which is great for letting a dog off for a run around. To find the cottage is quite simple, once you are in the main high street, look for the pink house and there is a white semi circle painted on the ground where you can quickly park up and unload. To the left of the pink house is a little alley way which leads to a small court yard and the cottage is on your left. There is a parking permit in the house for Joss Lane just up the road which is really handy. If you’re looking to eat locally, the Dalesman isn’t suitable for dogs but the Black Bull and Red Lion is, and the shops allow you to take a dog in. I had two lovely meals in the Red Lion. Delicious food, reasonably priced and Hannah’s customer service can’t be faulted. The Haddock Paddock is a good chip shop, but you might need to plan when you’re going as they only open for two hours in the evening. The cottage is about 20-25 minutes from Kendal and 40-45 minutes from Ambleside. There are buses that run to Kendal and a good local taxi service is On Time Taxis. All in all, I had a lovely stay and would be back again in a heartbeat.

Crozier cottage is in a fabulous location, both for views and local amenities.

It is well equipped and comfortable and well thought out. Not all facilities are listed by Sykes, ie downstairs toilet and use of Netflix not mentioned. Since Sykes took over from Heart of the lakes, standards of cleanliness and customer service have fallen dramatically. Despite the cleanliness of Crozier Cottage being mentioned by previous guests, some of whom were blamed by Sykes for being "irresponsible dog owners" one of the problems was still not addressed. This was due to the hoover being over full with weeks of dirt and dog hairs which blocked it completely and deposited the dirt back on the carpet. It took my husband half an hour to clean it out and get it useable for us. The general cleanliness in the current Covid climate was also lacking, particularly after we received an email telling us that our access time was put back to 6.00 pm because the usual cleaner was isolating and extra cleaners had been brought in. The email was sent after 2.00 pm on our arrival day and was not read until the next day, and strangely when we arrived at 4.05 pm there were no cleaners on site, so we went in. Prior to our holiday i contacted Sykes twice and was promised a call back that I never received. Their Customer Relations who deal with complaints were quite rude to me and the phone call to them achieved nothing. Each time I phoned Sykes I had difficulty hearing the person dealing with me because of the laughing and personal conversations going on in the back ground. Apparently Customer relations seemed to think this was fine! So I feel very sorry for Heart of the Lakes who have always been good and professional when we have used them many times before. I would certainly think very carefully before using Sykes again, we look for smaller companies that care about their customers. The good reviews that Sykes get are generally relating to the ease of the booking system they use, not about their customer care or the actual cottages.

Lovely modern lodge located opposite the main facilities and not far from the entrance so good access to bus stops.

Great location for Windermere and Ambleside. We were a party of 4 adults. You can get a map of the site from the main reception. The bar area is comfortable and dog friendly. Lodge is fairly well equipped and the addition of an air fryer was a welcome surprise. WiFi is the main site WiFi and good enough to stream Netflix on the Tv in the evening. However it can be unstable at times. Lodge has all the kitchen basics you need. It’s still new so hopefully things will get added, like oven gloves for example and a cafetière would be nice but that’s just me being picky. Beds and sofa’s are fairly comfortable and outdoor table and chairs are useful for warmer weather. Couldn’t work out the heating but owner was very helpful when called and soon sorted that. Really easy when you know how. There is some instructions in the Visitors Log Book which wasn’t an obvious place to look but we got there, no problem. Site is dog friendly with a nice walk down to lake and through the bit of Woodland. Onsite shop is a bit pricey but there’s a Spar at the garage about 400m up the main road towards Windermere if you need anything. Overall, this is a nice site and this lodge ticks all the boxes for my standards. Where I may have marked it down is only through personal preferences around the seating area layout compared to other lodges I’ve stayed in. The TV is quite high up on the wall and offset to the right so it makes it a bit uncomfortable to watch, especially with 3 adults squeezed onto the L shaped sofa. A big 3 seater would have worked better along with the additional chair. However, it would absolutely not put me off booking again and if I go back to White Cross Bay I’d want to book this lodge.
