Dog Friendly Barnard Castle Holiday Cottages

Barnard Castle takes its name from Bernard de Balliol who founded the castle in the 12th century. The ruins of Barnard Castle itself, set on the town's borders, offer fantastic views over the gorge of the River Tees. Visit the superb Bowes museum, with highlights including a life-size silver swan music box, alongside works by many notable artists. If your focus is more on the outdoors, kayaking and fishing are both available on the River Tees, and the countryside offers riverside and woodland walks. Don't miss the Eggleston Hall Gardens, alternately known as The Secret Garden of the North, with over four acres of gardens, complete with a 16th-century churchyard.

At Dog Friendly Cottages, we know that your holiday wouldn't be complete without your four-legged friend by your side, which is why we specialise in dog-friendly accommodation in Barnard Castle. We hand-pick every listing to give both you and your dog a comfortable base.

Barnard Castle is the perfect place to explore not only the immediate area but also the entirety of Country Durham, with many things to do on your doorstep and further afield. The area is a perfect location for couples retreats and family affairs alike.

What our customers say about their holidays

  • Stuart - Verified booking

The house was larger than expected, a good size two bedroom terrace, a reasonable size front room and a nice up to date kitchen diner, there is a small dining room to the side of the kitchen but did not need to use due to breakfast bar.

The main bedroom is a good size with a large king size bed that was comfy. The bathroom is also a reasonable size with a good shower and full size bath, nice hot water on demand. The location is as stated, and if you have dogs there is a nice walk around the museum grounds/wood that is just 2 minutes up the road, longer walks are just a 5 minute walk away down the road and across from the front of the museum, the town centre is a 5 minute walk with plenty of shops and cafes, a bit lacking in pubs with only one that we really liked(The three horse shoes) it was nice and clean and modern but the food choice was lacking. On arrival at Stang View there was a nice touch as others have said, with milk, cheese, eggs, bread and a bottle of red wine! We can vouch for the heating working as we were cooked in the middle of the night as someone had set a heating schedule to come on at 25 degrees! So just check no one has set a scheduling the heating control! The only slight niggles with the accommodation was it would have been nice to have black out curtains in the bedroom as it was quite light in the morning ( we like a sleep in!) also the large frying pan would not work with the induction hob, and a bigger kitchen bin as we had to empty it all the time, these are really minor things and we had a lovely stay and would stay again.

Even the Premier Inn provide hand soap!

Difficulty of stairs should have been mentioned in description. We had a real performance to guarantee that the toilet seat had been fixed before arrival. Furniture needs updating or replacing, springs coming through king sized mattress and dining chairs. Bedside tables only low boxes. Sofa too wide and low, cushions too soft. Nowhere comfortable to sit. Equipment not working e.g. radio and hoover. Claims to be dog friendly, many notices up prove not so. Items provided such as washing up liquid, loo roll, washing liquid etc.very cheap. No extras such as cling film or foil. Food from previous guests left in cupboard. Only one hand towel per floor and only one tea towel. Overall felt very cheap, which is a shame because it is a beautiful property in a fantastic location. The finishing touches let it down. It felt like the owners were just trying to make as much money as they could out of you. We do appreciate that it is a business, but there was a distinct lack of customer service.

We have just returned from a lovely week staying in Stang View - our second this year.

It's perfect for three of us - comfortable and very easy to look after - and the welcome pack of essentials (including bread, butter, milk, eggs and cookies) was very much appreciated. The location is brilliant - within easy walking distance of town centre shops and supermarkets. Despite the cold weather we were very comfy reading in front of the log fire but did venture out for walks in the Deepdale Nature Reserve and from Bowlees Visitor Centre. We also took advantage of our annual passes to revisit the Bowes Museum (purchased in April as they were cheaper than day tickets). We mostly dined at home as few of the pubs offer evening meals during the week and the kitchens close early (at least early for us!) but we did enjoy a very good meal at the Capri Italian restaurant (five minutes walk away on Newgate) and takeaways from the Barnard Castle Fisheries and Babul's (both on the Horse Market) were excellent. We're looking forward to our next visit!

    Beautiful property.

Well maintained and furnished to a high standard. Great location for the town and local attractions. Kitchen very well equipped to cook any meal. Living room is spacious with a lovely dining area and living room area. Small things need looking at. One of the dining room chairs had a collapsed seat cushion and wasn’t really safe to sit on in case it fell through. The grouting in the shower area could do with a good clean. Slightly unsightly. When we stayed it was extremely windy and the bedroom windows albeit double glazed were very noisy, rattled and let a lot of breeze in. Beds are super comfy and more wardrobe and storage space than you can think of which is fabulous. I would recommend to stay here but would hope the small things that need addressing don't become bigger issues that would spoil this lovely property.
