What our customers say about their holidays

I would say that this cottage was adequate and a good place to sleep but that was about it!

Starting with the positives, it was easy to find, directions were great and it is off a main road so no winding down roads for ages to get to it which is great after a long drive. The bed was also very comfortable! There was plenty of cups, plates etc. and having a fridge and facilities to make your own food was great (especially as there isn't any where within walking distance to eat). WiFi was good (and necessary as didn't have a phone signal at the house) Now onto the negatives... The whole house smelt of damp! It needs a really good airing. The people before us had clearly had the oil heaters on or the log burner but not aired the house properly as we could not shift the smell and it was embedded in the soft furnishings. The bathroom downstairs as well isn't the best. The shower has really low pressure and the angle is almost impossible to wash your hair and I am only 5ft 1 so you can imagine by husband struggled who is 6ft. We also found a bowl of rotting vegetables and salad in one of the kitchen draws which gave me reservations about how well the house was actually cleaned before we got there and promptly proceeded to anti-bac everything (with wipes i had brought myself). I also felt there was a lot of unnecessary "stuff" in the kitchen which with covid made me uneasy. Whilst it looked nice having a dresser with cups etc. and it was great to have plenty of cutlery etc. it really isn't necessary and I think they should strip things back to basics and then make sure they provide anti bac to wipe surfaces down etc. and it would make me feel more confident about the cleanliness of the house. The water also tasted funny which meant we went out to buy bottled water. I also think the TV could have been bigger and possible have DVD player or access to netflix. I also think the host could have been more organised with their welcome booklet offering advise on places to eat/drink/shop etc. I know you could argue that we could google it (which we did) but little things like that are what usually set the sykes cottages apart from staying in a hotel that you really feel well looked after! In summary if I had paid £60-£90 a night for this I would have been alright with the price but we paid £934.00 for 4 nights which frankly was a total rip off!

Although this cottage is set in a lovely area and in itself is cosy and functional, our main issue was the presence of mice in the property.

On the 3rd morning we found chewed remains of chocolate and on further investigation we found an abundance of mouse droppings behind the microwave and along the work surface in the kitchen. No one was available at the owners property until the evening to provide a solution and on the evening we were horrified to realise that this issue was not going to be dealt with by the cottage owner but instead by ourselves. She handed me 3 mouse traps and turned the conversation to the lovely day out that she had had that day. She did not come to the cottage to make any assessment of the situation on that evening which we consider totally unacceptable, although she did attend the following morning to ask if any had been caught. One of the traps had caught a mouse on that night and also on the following night. We do understand that rural areas may be prone to these issues but consider that the way it was dealt with was not acceptable. Restaurants are closed down if there is a presence of mice. We can only assume that there were mice around for the whole of our stay, and were quite clearly in the cottage as we slept. We will not reserve this cottage again as a result of these findings, and depending on how Sykes Cottages handle our experience, we will consider very carefully whether we book with your company in the future.

Property listed as accessible for wheelchairs.

We couldn’t get the wheelchair out of our vehicle even with our ramp due to large deep rocks. The threshold over the doorway was two high and no ramp provided. I had to be carried from the vehicle. Owner amended the listing day before we left. The property has beautiful views over the fields and mountains, lots of sheep and birds to see. Well equipped kitchen but only one shelf in oven. Some cupboards could do with some attention. Property soon gets warm we had to open windows at times. Bedrooms had plenty of storage, double bed needs attention uncomfortable for us both. Smaller bedroom smelt of damp, informed owner who came but said couldn’t smell anything. If damp we would see mould and bedding be wet. I wouldn’t recommend leaving items on the floor as they did get damp. When it rained it rains heavily against that wall. You get no phone signal which was no issue as WiFi. Cobwebs were left but most areas were clean. Shower was powerful but a very small rectangle head so difficult to wash. There is a shower chair available. Beautiful paintings throughout the property. Due to issues with listing and not being as accessible as originally advertised would restrict us booking again, but the property is in a beautiful location.

Firstly, for the dog owners who have trawled through and either can't find the info on any of the cottages or are sick of looking at places that claim they have a garden but it's a square of gravel, let me reassure you.

This cottage has French doors on the lounge and a door on the bedroom. There is a massive patio and a pretty cottage garden. It is secured by posts and stock fencing and approx 4 feet high. The resident dog did not come near the fence but the sheep do wander into the field at the bottom and side of the garden so may not suit if your dog is reactivate to animals. There are three steps from the patio to the garden but, if these are a problem, you could go out of the front door and walk a couple of feet to the garden gate and access it that way. The cottage is clean, the mattress very comfy- and I am extremely fussy about mattresses - and generally well equipped. The views are so relaxing and there is plenty of wildlife to watch if you want an escape. All you can hear are bees, sheep and birds, wonderful. You can also walk from the doorstep and there are lovely places to visit within a very short distance. I was lucky, I had amazing weather and spent most of my time here. I felt safe as a solo traveller as Gaye and her family are on hand if you need them but certainly not intrusive in any way.

We arrived late on a Friday afternoon, we had a look around the cottage and was disappointed with our first impressions.

The first thing noted was the condition of the cooker top was dirty looking. We set about cleaning the c00ker top as best we were able. We then decided to inspect the bedroom and was really upset, the bed appeared to look clean but when we pulled the throw back there was several woodlice in between the sheets! we removed the bed sheets and noted a stain on the sheets and pillow. The issues with the woodlice did not improved. There were other items noted, one of the chairs was broken, the toilet seat was not secure, to try and resolve the woodlice issue we moved the bed and noted that the floor area below the bed was disgusting. There was a travel trunk in the living room which we moved to retrieve a pack of playing cards and it was also noted that the area had not been need cleaned. WE WOULD APPRECIATE THE OPPERTUNITY TO DISCUSS THESE ISSUES WITH THE OWNERS PRIOR TO DECIDING TO PUBLISH OR NOT PUBLISH OUR REVIEW.
