Dog Friendly Cottages in Yorkshire
With the Lake District looming right next door, you’d think Yorkshire would be overshadowed by its notoriously beautiful neighbour. But nothing could be further from the truth. At 12,000 kilometres square, Yorkshire somehow manages to be the largest county in England, overflowing with cultural hotspots, stunning scenery and pet-friendly cottages.
Home to three national parks, 11 national nature reserves and astounding wildlife, this North East county is a strong contender for the most picturesque place in England. If your pooch loves the great outdoors (and we’re sure they do), Yorkshire is the perfect place to be. The only danger is, with so much to explore, a weekend break won’t feel nearly long enough.Three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty
While almost every inch of Yorkshire is a thing of beauty, there are three spots which stand out above the rest. The North East county is home to a whopping three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and each and every one of them makes for a great dog-friendly day out.
To start, there’s the Howardian Hills. Nestled between the North York Moors and the Vale of York, this rolling patchwork of green hills, soft pastures and wild woodland remains a secluded, almost secret spot.
Next, further from the Yorkshire coastline, is Nidderdale, the most popular location in the Yorkshire Dales. A land of heather drenched moors, quaint villages and rock formations, sliced apart by the wandering River Nidd.
Thirdly and finally, is the Forest of Bowland, which North Yorkshire shares with the tip of Lancashire. A spot stolen from the front of a picture postcard, the unspoilt woodland houses moors, bogs, and an array of rare birds.Walk through God’s own county
With so much incredible outdoors to explore, no dog-friendly holiday in Yorkshire would be complete without at least one walk. God’s own county is brimming with award-winning routes for you and your pooch to try. If you’re after a recommendation, try the coastal trail across Cloughton and Hayburn Wyke.
Running close by the pretty seaside town of Scarborough, this picturesque route wends its way through a thickly wooded valley that your dog will adore, before descending down to a beautiful rocky cove, complete with boulders and plunging waterfalls. From there, you’ll head back to the town of Cloughton, along disused railway tracks which were once the Scarborough to Whitby train line.A tropical getaway in North East England
Think of Yorkshire and most people picture rugged moors and green countryside. But where this incredible county meets the sea, lie some of the best sandy beaches in Britain. As anyone who’s taken their dog down to the coast knows, nothing gets our four-legged friends more excited than the sight of the sea. From digging in the sand to splashing in the shallows, the coastline is every dog’s dream.
Our favourite dog-friendly beach on the Yorkshire coast has got to be Robin Hood’s Bay. Surrounded by a picturesque fishing village that shares its name, this beautiful sandy beach is backed by craggy cliffs. While most of the beach disappears during high tide, when the water is out, it unveils a stretch of golden sand and mysterious rock pools.Pet-friendly cottages where perfection is guaranteed
