What our customers say about their holidays

We had a great time at Faunaâs Corner, it is situated in Captains Cooks Haven, which is quiet and peaceful and within easy walking distance to the centre of Whitby.
Our first impressions were of a well presented cottage, the kitchen is small but has all the appliances that you need, the fridge is old and rusty at the bottom of the door and needed defrosting. There were most things that we needed to cook a meal but we had to go buy a coffee maker as there wasnât one provided also there wasnât a colander for draining vegetables, pasta etc. The lounge and bedrooms were comfortable and well presented although surfaces were dusty. The bathroom was the room that let the whole place down, the hand basin is cracked and is set really low down. The shower is over the bath, but is very low as the roof slopes over the bath, I could only just stand up in the bath with my head touching the ceiling, at its highest setting the water from the shower head reached the middle of my shoulder blades, in order to get washed successfully the shower head has to be removed from the holder and hand held, washing my hair was a nightmare. I am 5â 7â but my husband is 6â 2â so he had more problems when showering, in fact he called it his daily limbo dance! We could have had a bath but that is very small too. The owners have tried very hard to make the cottage stylish and comfortable but for me I think fewer pictures and trimmings with the money spent on updating the bathroom would improve things greatly.

Sykes Staff have been nothing but friendly and accommodating, they were not to fault for our unsatisfactory stay.
The property however had dust webs left in corners (despite cleaners) and offered no QR code/Covid guidelines, no antibacterial hand wash or sanitiser (good job we took our own). We were greeted by a wasps nest by the front door obviously using the propertyâs roof. The door with its large double glass windows offered no privacy from passers by using the shared drive and communal laundry room given the fact the shower and toilet were right behind it which resulted in us having to hang a towel over the door. The pictures of the garden were misleading. It clearly shows a grass area which had been cordoned off and belonged to another property which only left the stoned area you see in the pictures which would have been fantastic if it werenât for the fact they are not friendly to the paws of our fury friends which meant our pet friendly get away wasnât in fact so pet friendly at all and his off lead play time went out the window. The directions to the property are not clear, even using âwhat four wordsâ we had difficulty. In the end we were forced to contact Sykes which then had to contact the owners who added another couple of steps to the directions. Frankly if it werenât for the fact we had to rely on a family member for travel and our signal was so spotty we never would have stayed.

I so wanted to write a fantastic review as upon arrival we were delighted with the cottage.
The area is outstanding, the cottage is in a lovely position and initially we really found the cottage comfortable, bright and welcoming. There were 4 adults and one baby and there was space and comfort for all . However as the first day unfolded we found we had to wash the kitchen equipment, the light switches were sticky with dirt , the bathroom sink was cracked , you could not shower properly as the ceiling sloped down , there were not enough glasses for water or cider etc , the grill tray for the grill pan did not fit , really annoying. We had paid £900 for our 3 nights , I understand we payed more than usual as it was a special event weekend in Whitby, however I would have thought this afforded us the luxury of more than one toilet roll for 4 people !! The surprising thing was the owners very generously left us a superb bottle of gin , tonic waters and chocolates, but I wish theyâd have spent the money on toiletries and glasses . Iâm sorry to write this as we had a fabulous time and if these issues were addressed we would go back again .

We were very disappointed with this property as it was in need of a deep clean!
It was very grubby and had a fishy/fusty aroma! I'm not sure where to begin but to name a few, the toilet had urine and hairs on it, there was damp on the walls and ceilings and the kettle was so dirty we did not even want to make a cup of tea with it. The bed was so uncomfortable, we both had bad backs the next day - we may as well have slept on the floor! Cleanliness is not a luxury, it is a basic requirement and clean it was not! The booking for 3 nights was not cheap but it was so bad we left after the first night and made a booking elsewhere which was not what I expected to have to do on my birthday weekend away! We were disgusted that the owner refused a partial/full refund, had we known the state of the property, we would have never have booked it. I have never had to complain nor leave a bad review for a holiday before and I only wish I could upload the photos I took as evidence to show you how bad it was compared to the photos used for advertising!

Faunaâs Corner felt like home from home the moment we stepped through the door .
So cosy and tastefully decorated with everything we needed for our week here. You can really see that a lot of love, care and attention has gone into this home . There was even a bottle of wine and biscuits waiting for us . We came as a couple , but would be great for a family with small children as there was a little play-area very close by . Spotlessly clean , cosy bed , compact bathroom ( you might struggle in the shower if youâre tall ) , kitchen had everything we needed⦠even a slow cooker . Itâs position was perfect ⦠peaceful â¦. near to the River , and the railway ( where the steam train regularly chugged by ) . A short walk ( 20 mins) along the Cinder Track took us into Whitby. I was unable to get a signal for my mobile phone at the cottage (Iâm on ee) , but my husband did ( heâs on 02) so I just used his hotspot . It was quite nice to just switch off for a few days
