Dog Friendly Cottages in Dorset

Home to above-average temperatures and below- below-average rainfall, Dorset’s rich countryside is perfect for your dog to connect with their wild roots. They can join badgers in the forests, puffins on the coast and run down rolling hills while falcons soar overhead.

Dog-friendly holiday cottages in Dorset aren’t just a place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. It’s a place where your dog can feel right at home.

More award-winning beaches than anywhere else in the UK

While Dorset is home to arguably the most beautiful countryside in Britain, where this South West county really shines is by the sea. Dorset boasts over 100 miles of stunning coastline and more award-winning dog-friendly beaches than almost anywhere else in the UK. Here at Snaptrip, we’re fans of Chapman’s Pool.

A horseshoe-shaped cove sketched into the landscape by tides over centuries, Chapman’s Pool is less a beach and more so paradise. Nestled on the South West Coast Path, the circle of sand around the water’s edge is soft and golden. Meanwhile, up on the cliffs, the smell of fresh green fields mixes with the salt of the sea, making the air down on the bay as crisp as it can be.

Best of all, this sandy spot is dog-friendly all year round so you and your four-legged friends can escape here whenever you feel like it. While something of a challenge to get to, with the nearest car park being quite a walk away, we think this only adds to the pool’s appeal. As many tourists decide to settle for more accessible spots, Chapman’s Pool remains relatively quiet, leaving this piece of paradise all for you and your pooch to enjoy. There are plenty of dog friendly beaches in Dorset that you can visit!

Britain’s most impressive attraction

What’s more, we haven’t even mentioned Dorset’s most impressive attraction. On the surface, the Jurassic Coast is 96 miles of exceptional scenery. Clear waters twist beneath craggy cliffs, in a display so stunning, it’s not only an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty but stands alongside the Great Barrier Reef as a World Heritage Site of ‘international importance’.

But, to those who know what they’re looking for, this stretch of coastline tells a dramatic story. Wander the Jurassic Coast with a guidebook and you’ll be able to read 185 million years of history on Earth. Spot the rock formations, colourations and find the fossils where the Earth really shows its age.

No pet-friendly holiday would be complete without at least one great walk and we don’t think anything beats taking a stroll down the Jurassic Coastline. We recommend picking a route near the famous seaside town of Lyme Regis. Britain’s most popular fossil hunting spot, come when the tide is out and who knows, your pooch may dig up a bone older than humanity itself.

Dog-friendly Dorset fun from coast to coast

Step away from the coast and Dorset still has loads to offer. For starters, there’s Corfe Castle. A famous survivor of the English Civil War, this incredible castle is renowned as one of the greatest medieval buildings in the UK. Best of all, our four-legged friends don’t have to miss out on this piece of history. If the weather’s nice, we recommend taking your dog for a wander about the ruins, before settling down for a picnic in the castle grounds.

If you’re in the mood for a spot of shopping, you’re in luck. Dorset is home to dozens of market towns, where you can visit hundreds of bespoke boutiques and feel immersed in old-country living. For starters, we recommend perusing the pet-friendly cottages of Shaftesbury. Quaint, gorgeous and utterly English, this town is most famous for being the home of ‘Gold Hill’. The steep cobbled street that provided the backdrop for ‘Britain’s favourite TV ad of the 1970s’ - Hovis’ famous bike advert. Not only that, but Dorset is also home to some of the best dog friendly pubs too! Looking for a bite to eat? Discover some of the best dog friendly places to eat in Dorset.

What our customers say about their holidays

  • Maureen - Verified booking

    Firstly we loved Lyme Regis.

However finding the property and key safe situation was a different story. We were not told until we had paid the full price of the holiday about the keysafe situation. We have used Sykes Cottages before and after payment we have been given instructions and the owners number which gives us as seniors peace of mind incase of any problems or difficulties. Your previous properties have been perfect no problems at all and even a welcome pack to greet you not here sadly. The garden isn’t inviting as it looks in the photographs. We were looking forward to using the deckchairs but they were in a poor state tucked up the side of the building. In fact all the garden furniture was in a poor state and it was a lot of money to us what we paid to be disappointed like this. It’s supposed to have a washing machine but it hasn’t that shouldn’t be stated. Yes it states the steps to the bathroom are step but that is a bit of an understatement for health and safety reasons there should be a rail put there. The extraction fan was making terrible noises so we were nervous to use it so refrained and that wasn’t ideal as there is no window in the said bathroom. We didn’t stay the whole term of the holiday we had to return home the bed was so uncomfortable we were suffering with terrible backache. Luckily it was very warm so didn’t require to use the duvet so layed that on the mattress to try and make it a bit more comfortable.

We found Corum lodge to be comfortable and clean.

The bed was really comfy. It's in a fantastic location, with parking and a garden for our pooch being a real bonus. A welcome pack on arrival was a nice touch. However, there were some issues which meant that I couldn't give the property 5 stars. The lodge is compact, which means you have to navigate corners and doorways with care. This being the case the door handles are way too large and stick out too far. I have come home covered in bruises! The double quilt supplied was too heavy for the summer. We had to sleep with only a sheet on us, but in the early hours it was very cold without a blanket. A summer duvet is needed for the hotter months. There is an internal step between the livingroom and the bedroom. This should be highlighted in the accommodation description. Our elderly dog couldn't navigate the step which meant we were constantly having to lift him up and down it. There is a washing machine at the property, which I presumed would have a drying function (it doesn't). The airer that was provided was flimsy and too small. A bigger airer that is stable enough to put outside would have meant a lot less hassle. There was no fan at the property. Luckily I took my own fan, otherwise it would have been way too hot to sleep without it. Apart from these issues we really enjoyed our stay. I would recommend Corum lodge as it is perfect for a couples get away.

There were a few issues which should have been checked prior to our arrival.

I contacted Sykes about the major ones which were rectified. The sofa bed was broken which meant we couldn't sit on it for the first day and most of the second. The leak in the cloakroom radiator should have been noticed when the property was cleaned prior to our arrival and the lights checked as a few weren't working. Sykes were efficient and sent someone from maintenance to fix the sofa bed and some of the lights and explained that the other issues would be fixed after our stay. Good service from Sykes and maintenance. The terrace was a let down as there was rubbish in the corner bed which was also full of weeds. The paving slabs had lots of weeds growing through and we found plastic and other rubbish which our dogs could have eaten. It wasn't pleasant and meant we couldn't sit out and relax. The king size bed was extremely comfortable and we both slept well. Both bathrooms are good and the showers excellent. The kitchen was well equipped and we appreciated the lovely welcome pack. If the terrace was weeded and cleaned we would definitely stay again as overall we had a lovely holiday enjoying all that Lyme Regis has to offer so close by. The property location and parking is an asset and it was nice to be able to walk everywhere.

From the street the cottage looks small. Do not be deceived! Once inside and beyond the lobby you are in a very large and well appointed lounge area. Comfy sofas and some rugs on the enormous stone flags. Huge log burner in the fireplace (not used but, looks like it would be great in the colder months). Large TV above sideboard so, if is raining or you just want to chill or watch TV, you're sorted. Dining room and kitchen are big enough and have all of the facilities you need. Storage is a bit "tight" but, just rearrange a bit and you should be ok (we did, we were). Bathroom has a great shower and everything else you need. Main bedroom to the front is large and houses a superking bed. I think there is a second bedroom but, we didn't have access to it. From the outside this looks to be quite large. The garden is a peaceful haven but, was being changed/updated when we were there. Sure the stairs are steep but, its just how it was when the property was built. Parking can be a pain but we managed to park in the street every day. The walk to the car park in the square is 5 minutes so, not the end of the world. Enjoy your stay, we recommend it!

Lovely warm house in great location.

Open plan and clean and fresh. The key box was not easy to open. I have used lots, but this was tricky. My husband managed to open it in the end. As it was Christmas I needed to buy a roasting tin as there were no baking trays in the house, only the one tray in the oven. I realised this on Christmas Eve and the wonderful Arthur Ford ironmongers was open! The oven gets hotter at the front so food needs to be turned half way through cooking. The dishwasher didn't clean the crockery well, possibly it was due to the dishwasher tablets provided. Would have preferred a washer dryer over a dishwasher due to getting muddy on dog walks! Good to have parking. The people who live opposite park their car in front of the Old Bakehouse corner space. We just used the right hand Old Bakehouse space. One night another car managed to park diagonally in the corner space which could have made it tricky to reverse our car out. Another night and day there was a car parked in front of the house front door (where the info says not to park). Parking not a problem in Winter, but could be difficult in the busy Summer. Would love to stay here again.
