Loved the whole experience of the cottage, Alnwick and the wider Northumberland area.

Locals lovely, neighbours lovely and a great parking spot as I drive a pickup truck. Bed amazingly comfy and loved the lounge chairs that , at the click of a switch turned into luxury slouching chairs. I've genuinely never been on one of these before. As others have said cottage is a little dated in the kitchen but absolutely nothing wrong with it, I'm still using a similar era kitchen at home with no plans to change. Minute gripes.... Front door can be a bit difficult to open but I do have arthritis in my thumbs. Could do with advice on what to do with glass for recycling. We couldn't find anywhere (not that we were searching high and low) so bought bottles home with us. Finally, if I read your instructions correctly, a dog isn't supposed to go anywhere in the cottage but the kitchen. This is not practical. Fully appreciate not letting them upstairs but we weren't going to even try and stop our little jack russell girl joining us in the lounge. She knows she's not allowed on furniture or to put her paws on them, she doesn't at home either so we trust her. Anyway, love to stay with you again in the near future, thanks for a great week

Couple of things marred the experience, {something I have not experienced before with Sykes}.

Firstly I was advised that adjacent building work would be completed by end of February, Wrong ! it was still in full flow all week with various vans plus a JCB back and forth and mud spattered all over my car. Secondly the Retreat is not covered by wifi "NFWIFI" but as I eventually discovered 3 days later it was "NFPOOL"! supposedly the link for studios and apartments only. Ms Nicola Snaith was not in her office to seek assistance on the three times I called between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. but then her office seemed to be a store for odd pieces of building materials. Finally I now note that you are operating a 30% discount due to the ongoing building work , something I would have preferred to receive .Net result is that I'm not a happy customer and as a regular customer I would expect some form of financial recompense. Had a lovely stay in The Retreat.

Compared to the other properties the wee cottage is not modern or 'chic' but we knew that before we went as the photos are accurate. The cottage was clean, fully equipped and warm and the bread/milk/butter/OJ was a nice touch. We had a dog and there is a garden BUT its not enclosed so had to let her out on her lead to do her business which was ok in May but maybe in the winter a bit grim. It would be easy to enclose the garden. Slight criticism would be the curtains in the two bedrooms are thin so daylight from 5am, some may not bother but quite bright if you want a cheeky lie in on holiday. We made use of the pool which was clean and great you get the slot to yourself. A fabulous holiday in a great part of the country and great the owners cut the grass to make the walk to the beach and into the village easy.

We have just stayed at Upper Oakwood and other than the apartment being beautifully decorated and having great facilities I have nothing good to say.

We’ve had little to no sleep with the amount of noise from the people walking around upstairs due to their floor boards being ridiculously noisy to the point they sound like they are going to come through the ceiling and the nightlife pounding on until the early hours. People walking past shrieking/fighting on the street behind on the pub crawl route and with the windows being single glazed they might as well have been inside. My five year old has been woken up at least 10+ times each night, including with the floorboard stomping and creaking above. All in all we wouldn’t recommend for any families at all. The apartment would be good for people wanting to go out and party in Alnwick however for anything else it just isn’t a relaxing break. It is however beautiful inside and has a lovely charm to it.

This is a lovely period property well located in Alnwick, with everything you need for a comfortable stay.

We were close to all the wonderful restaurants and bars, and really enjoyed our holiday. A lot of thought has gone into making the flat comfortable. It was clean with lovely towels and bed linen, and separate shower room and bathroom, which is handy. Nice and warm too! What I would say is that the flat can be a little noisy. There is another property above with floorboards, and this meant sound travelled early mornings. There is also a degree of street noise at night as town centre location, and during the day, street works started this week for the next few weeks, which meant an early start and a lot of drilling! Thankfully the peaceful Northumberland coast is only a short drive away. On balance a great property for a break in Alnwick.
