What our customers say about their holidays

  • Geoff - Verified booking

We stayed at High Legh for a week from Friday 5th July and my complaint mainly concerns what we found on arrival although, for completeness, I have added some other hopefully helpful comments at the end of this note.

This was our second visit – the first being two and a half years ago. Knowing the property, my wife and I arrived before the rest of our party as we needed to get the house ready for a special birthday celebration. The rooms were very clean with many things as before but there was a significant problem with the freezer in the kitchen. We had brought food with us which we needed to quickly freeze after our journey. However the freezer was unusable because of dirty solidified ice and huge bags of ice cubes welded to the shelves and compartments. My wife had to semi defrost the freezer rather than complete more urgent tasks in order to get any of our food into the freezer. This took her over of 3 hours during which time the rest of the family arrived including four grandchildren, all 5 or under. The freezer had not been inspected for some time as the build-up of ice and a broken flap to the bottom compartment hadn’t just happened recently. The only solution is probably for the owners to buy a new self-defrosting freezer or for the cleaning staff to defrost the current freezer in the 5 hour window they have between visitors but taht may not be feasible. This was our main complaint about the property this time, but it has to be said although we tried both the mobile number provided by the owner plus a Sykes contact number that evening, neither produced a reply. The information left for visitors is insufficient or inaccurate with too much included about another property abroad rather than helping someone navigate and feel at ease in High Legh. That was unhelpful but I need to mention to you that the quality of various things had noticeably deteriorated since we first visited when we felt like we were like the very first visitors. Back in 2021 it was immaculate and so smart. Sadly, I guess other visitors don’t treat the possessions of others as we do – we always respect a holiday let as we would our own home. For your (and the owners) information a few things we noticed during the week that certainly need remedial action/attention are • Our grandchildren aged 2-5 were at risk of being badly stung by nettles in retrieving balls from behind the basketball hoop etc. For families this is unacceptable and needs addressing immediately. • The foot of the garden table at the bottom of the garden has rusted away making it quite unstable. • The boules court needs a good weed - it looks very tatty and not liek the pictures. • The edge of the cover to the hot tub is ripped in places where people haven’t folded it back with care and in the right way • One settee in the lounge has a broken leg plus the legs of the various drinks tables are very wonky. We actually feel rather sorry for the owners as a fantastic property is now showing signs of aging and misuse by visitors but frankly they need to think about reinvesting in it to restore it to its former glory.

The cottage itself is lovely but is in serious need of a very deep clean and quite a lot of maintenance.

The porch lets in water which was very challenging due to the weather whilst we were there. Top of washing machine and dryer in need of good clean. Kitchen quite clean other than dirty windows. The fridge freezer required me to completely clean the fridge before I could use. Tha sitting room again at first sight seemed clean but was not. Dusty skirting boards and cobwebs on the light fittings. There were food crumbs under one sofa, log burner covered in dust, enough for me to write "Hello" in it and be clearly seen. No instructions for the use of the log burner. Bathroom shower extreme black mould on door, base and grouting. The radiator in the bathroom does not work despite it supposedly running from the log burner. The stairs are from the sitting room up and they had very large cobwebs IE 6/7" in length. Wall paper was peeling in places. Double bedroom has black mould under and wallpaper and on the wallpaper by the window. The wallpaper is peeling extensively. Again the windows need a good clean. Bedroom 2 was not as bad but again under the beds fluff and dust all around the skirting boards. And the landing area is also in need of skirting boards cleaning, dresser top has pot pourri in a bowl which should be thrown away as so very dusty and dirty. One last matter is that exiting the drive onto the road needs extreme caution if you have a low bumper and suspension as there is a distinct "V" were the drive meets the road. I had to ensure no husband in the passenger seat of my vehicle to alleviate the weight on the front of the vehicle as the bumper caught. So, a very disappointing experience all in all.

Please kindly note that it was very disappointing to find that even basic cleaning had not been carried out to a satisfactory standard within the above property.

The following items/areas were not found to be in order: Shower/Toilet/Main Living area floor/Dirty oven dishes in the cupboard, (that had either been left dirty by the previous persons, and had not been picked by the Owner). There was no heating provided to dry Towls within the Bathroom, (there was a piped heated towel rail, but this was linked to the central heating system, which was off). One side of the matress within the mainbedroom was very uncomfortable with a spring. There were no 'Oven gloves' provided, (this is a basic item and a new pair should have been provided). It was not satisfactory at all trying to use 'Tea-towels', and there was not even a potato peeler provided! (this is all basic stuff). The front garden is not, 'Dog friendly' as it is open with no gates off the main parking area and the road is very busy with 'Farm traffic'. It should also be noted that there was 'no' local holiday information booklet provided' for the above property. The above list overall is very disappointing too have to feedback, and not up to the required standard that i would normally expect from 'Skyes Cottages' who i have used for a number of years, and usually twice a year. During the current climate i would not have expected to have found any, 'Cleaning issues'? and it gives me little confidence, that the 'Self-Catering' Industry are correctly managing these factors? I would not recomend the above property, untill all of the above items are addressed accordingly.

We have had an absolutely fantastic few days at Legh Oaks farm.

The whole house was warm and inviting as we arrived and was spotlessly clean. It was a definite wow factor as we walked in. The bedrooms were spacious and comfortable and the fact that they all had access to a bathroom was a bonus. The kitchen was well equipped and a great space for family meals. The hot tub was clean and ready to use on arrival. We would definitely recommend this to friends and family. However there were a few things that we noticed straight away, that need addressing for future visitors which they probably already know about, otherwise we would have given it 5 stars. We realise that it’s very popular and that there might not have been time to keep up with small maintenance jobs in between rentals. The microwave door cover kept popping up , it just needs some strong glue, we had to put a few strips of tape on it. There were no kitchen scissors, thats about the only utensil missing. The freezer had draw doors either missing or broken. The flush button in the downstairs bathroom was loose. The small tables in the living room were very unstable. The wicker garden set had no parasol and two of the chairs were unsafe as the seats had worn through. It is worth mentioning that none of the above affected how much we enjoyed your property. These are all things that can easily be put right but needed mentioning, as you have a wonderful property that can be worthy of 5 stars in the future. This must be the most awesome property we’ve ever stayed at.

As soon as we walked through the front doors we were all gobsmacked as to its size, amenities, cleanliness and the fact we all had spacious beautiful bedrooms with an en suite to each of them. To have our own spacious lounge to relax in comfort as adults with a wood burner, whilst the children watched their own programmed on the tv in the cinema room. The kitchen area was to die for. It was huge and well equipped with fridges and freezer, dishwasher and an amazing cooker, oven, hob and extractor fan. The massive table and chairs accommodated the nine of us easily for meals in comfort. Just off the hallway in an enclosed space was a sink, and bar area with yet another fridge for the alcohol. The enclosed garden area was ideal, safe and spacious for our little dog and the children with a basketball hoop and the awesome hot tub. I enjoyed my early morning coffee on one of the two patio areas every morning being visited by a beautiful pheasant. All in all none of us have any qualms in highly recommending this property to others as we all said we’d like to make a return trip there in the future. The only issue we have is that we couldn’t stay longer.
