Dog Friendly Cottages In Fowey

Your dog will love a cottage holiday in Fowey

Set on Cornwall's stunning south coast, Fowey is a perfect holiday destination for you and your four-legged friend. Canine hooters will find plenty of scents to keep them alert and excited as you wander around this historic harbour town and the maze of backstreets offers plenty of scope for interesting walks. There are some beautiful, dog-friendly beaches just a stick's throw away, and some outstanding dog-friendly cottages in Fowey, where your furry chum will be more than welcome.

Readymoney Beach and Whitehouse Beach are among two of the best beaches for dogs, with more than enough sand to satisfy dedicated diggers and the inviting waters of the English Channel to paddle in. Like most of the beaches in Cornwall, dogs can roam free between October and Easter. If you'd prefer to take your break in the sunshine, there's a good selection of year-round beaches not far from some of our dog-friendly cottages in Fowey; check out Par Sands, Spit Beach, and Lantivet Bay. Once you've walked up an appetite, grab a bite at the Ship Inn or the Old Ferry Inn, both of which admit dogs. The Lifebuoy Café is another great pit-stop for hungry hounds and their owners, and don't pass up the chance to try the fish and chips at the King of Prussia!

Dog-friendly things to do

With coastal walks, an estuary to explore, dog-friendly boat trips and the traditional town to sniff around, Fowey has plenty on offer for dog-lovers. Here are a few of our favourite things to see and do on your break:

St Catherine's Castle, Fowey

Built in the 14th Century, by King Henry VIII, St Catherine's Castle is just a short stroll from the South West Coastal Path. Sitting on top of a cliff and surrounded by woodland, it's a superb way to explore Cornwall's past. Dogs must be kept on leads but are very welcome.

The Eden Project

Just a 15-minute drive away, the Eden Project is one of Cornwall's most famous attractions. Dogs, as long as they're kept on leads, can soak up the heady cocktail of scents and smells in the Outdoor Gardens and enjoy a leisurely walk around the miles of outdoor paths. If you're planning on visiting the Biomes, you'll either need to leave your dog in the car or have someone to look after your pet while you nip inside. There's no charge for dogs.

The Ferry to Mevagissey

As long as your pooch is on their best behaviour, they're more than welcome aboard the Fowey-to-Mevagissey Ferry. It's just over half an hour's trip and, in the right conditions, you just might spot a dolphin or two! Dogs travel free and Mevagissey has some superb, dog-friendly attractions, such as Portmellon Beach and The Lost Gardens of Heligan.

What our customers say about their holidays

  • Lynne - Verified booking

Pleasant cottage in good location for Fowey amenities and car park really close by (Caffa Mill) which was handy as not possible to pull up outside to unload.

It was well equipped. I appreciate it was end of season but everything felt a little tired and cleanliness whilst ok could have been better - you could see finger prints all over kitchen cupboard doors, light switches and cooker controls etc. wall next to dishwasher was splashed with stains, mirror and TV in lounged had large smears on them and we had to clean up the ‘crows nest’ before using. Crows nest is a lovely space but in our opinion unsuitable for anyone with any mobility issues, even minor ones. Only used a few times as a bit of an effort to get up there especially if you wanted to take any drinks or food. Internet connection was useless and we had to purchase data and coffee machine didn’t work which was a shame as we had bought ‘pods’ specially as we use an espresso machine at home. The heating was on full blast when we arrived which was overwhelming. It wasn’t easy to sort this due to the way it was set up, we had to turn all radiators we could off (although you couldn’t turn off the ones in the kitchen and bathroom) and lower the temperature setting on the boiler. This wasn’t helped by not being able to open any downstairs windows (it could have been us but they didn’t seem to be able to be opened?) and the window in the main bedroom had a note on asking us not to open as it was broken and awaiting repair, not ideal as we do sleep with an open window at home as we like fresh air to circulate. We didn’t need to turn any radiators back on or turn temperature back up during our stay. Lounge was cosy, cushions need replacing as flat and whilst it was ok for the 3 of us you would struggle watching TV if there were 4 people as one of the 4 seats is under the TV. Great selection of games provided. Overall we enjoyed our stay but it’s not somewhere we would consider a return visit to.

Overall we were happy with everything Cornish Horizons (aka Original Cottages) did to describe the property and provide support. We were happy with the property too apart from one issue. The very low score on the cleanliness is only because the mattress on the bed had an unpleasant smell (a bit like sweaty feet), which meant we were uncomfortable the first night, until we stripped the bed, stopped using the duvet, and eventually worked out that it was the mattress that smelled, not just the duvet or mattress cover (we thought it was at first it was the duvet, then the mattress cover, but we think they smelled because they had been in contact with mattress). Apart from that, the rest of the property was clean and well presented. I can appreciate that spotting that the mattress smelled bad is probably not something the owner or cleaner would have easily noticed (unless they had tried to sleep in the bed). Hopefully, the owner has done something about the mattress after the comments I called and left with Paige on 0333 0151348 and the note I left on the stripped mattress for the cleaner/property owner.

We’ve used Shellseekers twice a year, since it first became a holiday rental.

.. some 5 times now, and have always found it an extremely comfortable, home from home stay. However, on our recent visit last week, we noticed that a few things around the house have begun to feel a little tired and well used. The bedding has been the same since we first started using Shellseekers and a new thicker duvet and pillows in the main bedroom is now needed, along with new linen and a better fitting mattress cover, which would make for a better nights sleep. The bathroom floor has started to expand, causing large cracks that little toes can get caught in and the cutlery is now feeling very tired and has become awkward to use. These are just some observations we made during our last stay. Please don’t let your standards slip in this wonderful little cottage.... its level of comfort is why we’ve been repeat customers so many times. These things are easily rectifiable, but sadly, if they are not, it will make us and possibly others question whether to book again.

This is a lovely property in the most fabulous location.

It's really well stocked - the kitchen had all the equipment I needed to cook meals. The sitting room had a lovely selection of books and games, although frankly we spent a lot of time just staring out of the window at the astonishing view. There's plenty to keep a family busy nearby - kayaking, the Hall walk, Fowey aquarium, crabbing and of course jumping into the harbour at high tide. The local shop is open every day and well stocked, although I was caught out by face masks still being required - bring one with you! I've knocked one point off comfort as it's clear that the rooms at the back of the property are quite damp. It didn't bother us in the slightest, but people who feel strongly about that sort of thing may want to bear this in mind. The owners were very friendly and helpful. We never go back to the same place twice, but I could see us going back to Polruan and The Watch Below - it is a very special place.

We had the most lovely relaxing week at Veryan Cottage. Loved the views and the quiet but central location. The cottage was immaculate. Beds were comfy, showers were good, the kitchen was thoughtfully equipped. The window seats overlooking the town were gorgeous and we sat out on one or more of the terraces every day. The cottage is not huge but comfortably accommodated our two adults, two teens and a dog. The two bedrooms are on different floors which may not suit everyone but fine for us. Access to the cottage is in the middle of a steep flight of steps which again may not suit everyone. We had to put a bit of thought into how and when to unload / load our car but that seems to be the norm for Fowey. Main car park was a short (steep) walk away. Just a few minutes’ walk to the beaches for a morning swim - loved it! Would happily stay again.
