What our customers say about their holidays

We loved the Roseland area and the location of Sally Port Cottage directly on the South-West Coast path was perfect for walking and access to the Fal ferries as well as further visits to Helligan and the Eden project. The lighthouse cottage was in an amazing location and for the most part it was very well furnished and comfortable. The excellent welcome hamper including scones, jam and clotted cream was a lovely surprise. However we did have a few issues which I'm sure Rural Retreats could rectify: - Access instructions are not clear. We arrived in the pouring rain and did not want to get soaked finding the right path. Parking is in a National Trust car park with pay and display machines and a sign saying the gate is shut at sunset. We had to call Lesley, the housekeeper, who wasn't aware that the car park had ever been closed and said that there was no need to pay. Why not state this in the instructions? The path to the cottage is behind the information board as stated but there are two paths. The one on the left signed "Coast Path, Place, Battery and Observation Hide" goes down quite steeply with several steps, the one on the right "Wheelchair Accessible" is on the level but meets up further down with the other path and much easier with wheeled luggage. You then have to ignore the turning to the left to the "Battery and Observation Hide" and carry on downwards towards the Coast Path. Once at the bottom (it is very steep and slippery when wet), the Coast Path is to the right (signed) and the Lighthouse to the left with no sign at all. - The Lounge furniture has been recently changed. It is very comfortable but the lighting is terrible as the lamp has been removed. It is impossible to read books in the evening or look at maps. - the kitchen is well equipped but the knives were very blunt and there is no draining rack. Not everything goes in the dishwasher. - Although this cottage is advertised as having wifi, neither the wifi nor the telephone provided for local and emergency calls were working. We could just about get a mobile phone signal by the lounge window and also above the patio - when the rain stopped!

VERY DISAPPOINTED with the place, though the views were excellent, pity everything else was not represented acutely in the description.

Left early as on day 4 we were woken up early by the window cleaner washing the windows (that had no nets on) whilst my daughter and wife were sleeping for him to have a good stare at. If you are disabled and in a wheel chair forget it, the only good thing is the wet room. Not sure where the 3 level are as it is 2 levels unless it has an underground bunker that we did not find, and we could not find 3 bathrooms either, that may also be in the underground bunker. We did find a shower cubical at the end of the utility room and a small cupboard for a toilet, however I was unable to get through the kitchen door to see for myself as my wheelchair did not fit through the doors. If you want to visit anywhere you needed to add 35/40 mins to every journey as you are 15 miles from the main body of Cornwall down country lanes, so no chance for any takeaways or deliveries, are a no no. The walk to the harbour is more than a challenge you would need to be very fit as the quick way is like a 1 in 2 gradient not a hope in hell of pushing a wheelchair up even my electric buggy could not do it. The longer way is a 1 in 4 and even my 3 fit mid 20’s kids where struggling and a good 15/20 walk all up hill. To cap it all off the sofas and chairs were so low to the floor that you needed help to get up and very old too. Did have a nice recliner there so me and the wife jousted to see who would win. Not the cleanest of places I must say but well equipped, beds, linen and towels all good and a nice welcome pack as well. If you are looking for remote quiet and peaceful place and do not want to do anything and eat in everyday , this fits the bill, unfortunately the next door neighbour was having work done which was very noise and annoying. Nice coop shop but all the others are well expensive even the cafes are ridiculously over priced as they know you cannot go anywhere else as this is all there is for 15 miles.

Sat 07 Sept 24 - Thurs 12th Sept 24 We are very disappointed in our stay at this apartment as primarily our reason for choosing it and what we paid for fell short in the following areas.

Firstly I’d like to address what was advertised in the description which we simply didn’t have. (I have screenshots of the apartment description if u need to see them) A Smart TV. There was no tv in this property whatsoever and we wouldn’t have booked if we knew this. We have a small child with us and on rainy days we could have used a smart tv to watch a movie, also it would have been nice to have the morning news on everyday. A Microwave, there was no microwave which made it very difficult to warm our babies milk in the morning and night and also warm up baby food throughout the day. The large extractor fan above the kitchen island doesn’t work and created lots of smoke when cooking. The extractor on the wall isn’t fit for purpose and is the opposite side of the kitchen. The garden is half finished. Not very nice to look at, and should feature in the photos as we were under the impression we’d have a recently refurbished garden as advertised. There wasn’t enough warm water for 4 people to have a quick shower each morning. This meant our son had a cold shower most mornings and there was no warm water throughout the day until 2pm. This again wasn’t advertised. The WiFi is incredibly slow as well. This combined with no tv meant we couldn’t even stream movies on our phones very well. I look forward to seeing what compensation u can offer based on the simple fact that what was advertised and paid for wasn’t provided. As a business owner myself, if I advertise a product and don’t deliver on what I advertised, I cannot in good faith charge for something that is essentially false advertisement. Kind Regards, Tony

What a fantastic venue to chill out away from all the hassle and hoards of holidaymakers. Sally Port Cottage has all the charm, peace and fabulous views that anyone could wish for. If you are into bird life and walking as we are, then it is surely the perfect location. The cottage is equipped with everything that one requires, even down to ear plugs in case of foggy conditions across the estuary. The nearest beach is only half a mile walk along the coastal path and there are lots of interesting places to explore. The write up on Sally Port Cottage does explain about the parking arrangements in the National Trust car park, high up on Saint Anthony’s head and the need to transport your cases and belongings down a steep path to the lighthouse. If there is one thing that overshadows this fabulous place, it would be, hauling your suitcases, firstly down the hill on your arrival then the thought of having to drag them back up again at the end of your stay. Some kind of motorised aid for assisting with visitors luggage would really be a great idea, even better, an electric ride on buggy for the elderly or unfit! I have rated the cottage five stars but purely for the climb back and forth, I would have to reduce this by half a star.
