Dog-Friendly Holidays Near Scarborough

Nestled along the dramatic North Yorkshire coastline just 19 miles south of Whitby, Scarborough is famous for being the first seaside resort in Britain. Today, you'll find a thriving seaside community characterised by beautiful beaches, local walks, and a wealth of history.

The coastline is affectionately known as the ´Dinosaur Coast' and budding fossil hunters might even be lucky enough to find some prehistoric treasure. It's also popular with bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts due to the diverse array of species native to the area.

The main beaches do have some restrictions through summer. However, there are some quieter hidden gems that are dog-friendly year-round… Scarborough North Bay is your best bet if you're staying in the town and the golden sands of Cayton Bay are just three miles south of Scarborough.

Scarborough also borders the North York Moors, making it ideal to explore the beautiful surrounding countryside with a canine companion. Near the town, you can easily explore Cloughton & Crook Circular and Hackness Circular, just past Suffield.

To refuel after a day of exploring, you'll find plenty of fantastic dog-friendly restaurants. One of our top picks is The New Lancaster near South Bay which serves amazing upmarket gastro pub staples.

On rainy days, The Scarborough Maritime Heritage Centre is dog-friendly and offers a brilliant way to connect with the rich seafaring history of the town.

What our customers say about their holidays

  • Rapid - Verified booking

So on arrival the property looked lovely, a real old fashioned coach house gorgeous setting, beautiful kitchen etc.

Upon closer inspection we found the property to be lacking the most basic items, no dish clothes, no bin liners, a mish mash of dinner service, one tea towel etc we had to go out and purchase our own kitchen & cleaning items. Had we been informed the property would have less than the basics we would have certainly been prepared for this not having to go straight out and purchase them. The general cleanliness throughout the property was not great, the upstairs bathroom was mouldy across the tiles in the bath area, the shower screen edge was black, the upstairs carpets heavily stained, the hob in the kitchen was so greasy and had not been cleaned, everywhere was dusty and could have done with a really good clean. We had no WIFI the whole stay and very basic TV channels we had to hotspot from our phones to watch any TV (The weather during the week meant we had to spend quite a bit of time in the property so this was crucial) on the first night we had awful heavy rain which caused a huge leak in the double bedroom through the roof of the dorma window, we was told to put a pan underneath it, we moved in to the twin room which was not ideal to sleep in single beds as a couple. We did approach the owner on the next day and Sykes who arranged for us to be refunded if we wished and leave but we chose to stay hoping that things would get better the roof was apparently repaired but still leaked. We did enjoy our week and the hot tub was great I just wanted to let anyone know to be prepared what they may arrive to. SUch a shame as the place is stunning and with a little effort would be an ideal base to explore a beautiful area of the country.

Had a lovely stay at the Nail Shed celebrating our wedding anniversary.

We were impressed with the facilities. The underfloor heating throughout was lovely. The kitchen was well stocked and the cottage is beautifully furnished. The owners were welcoming and we enjoyed our welcome drinks in the Anvil Inn adjacent to the property. We ate there on both nights of our stay and have to say the fillet steaks were delicious and cooked to perfection. The pub has a cosy feel to it with wood burning stoves in each room. We travelled with our dog and the owner was helpful in suggesting local walks. We visited Cayton Bay which was a beautiful unspoilt stretch of sand for him to run around on. If I was to provide any constructive criticism it would be that the hanging area in the wardrobes could do with being a little higher and I also think the listing could be expanded to include things like hairdryer, tea, coffee provided as these were things I packed unnecessarily as I couldn’t be sure from the listing. I also think as it’s a pet friendly cottage, the provision of dog bowls for food and water might be welcome (I forgot to pack these but have found them provided previously!). Very minor niggles but all in all a wonderful stay.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable week at number 25 , with our 2 spaniels .

The gardens front and rear were totally enclosed which was brilliant. We have stayed in many places where they advertise the garden as being enclosed but in reality they are not which is a total disappointment. Because it was early March we couldn’t sit in the gardens, but the sunshine streamed into the kitchen and dining area and it was warm enough to have the patio doors open. The rear garden is secure , private and pristine. Also the front garden is raised and if it had been a little warmer we would have enjoyed a coffee with the view to Peasholm Park. On arrival there was a super welcome pack for us humans and treats for Zara and Bella our spaniels . Also 2 doggy fleeces, a towel and dog bowls to use during your stay. So many interesting walks from the doorstep….and the beach just a ten minute walk away. As you get to the beach there is Taylor’s bar and Kitchen. A super place, great staff, lovely food and dogs very welcome. Also a 2 minute walk from the house , an excellent fish & chip shop ,the tastiest ever . We can’t recommend number 25 highly enough and will definitely return. Many thanks for making our holiday perfect.

The pictures dont do the justice of this stunning cottage.

It locates in the owners farm and also has good access to coastal towns. The property itself is very spacious with a beautifully maintained garden. Its enclosed so our dog could wander freely without me checking him constantly. He went to front open space too where he interacted with the owners dogs and explored their barn. The views over the field was just breathtaking. My partner stood by the window upstairs hours daily reading and enjoying the scenery there. The horses were magnificent and my partner just fell in love with Max. The sheep had a funny character approaching me for a petting. They kept barrbarring until I noticed them and gave them some good attention. The owner was very helpful and offered us to use their tumble dryer as the weather was wet during our stay. We didnt find kitchen scissors and tongs but managed without them, so didnt bother to ask the owners. The only thing I would say is the washing machine door seals might need a change. But it doesnt stop us visiting again. All in all, this is a great accommodation. Well done Robert and Joanna for your effort put into it

Having booked for 4 adults, 2 disabled children and 2 dogs it was good to find that we were only a few minutes away from the sea front.

With the aid of a permit we were able to park in the residents parking which was just around the corner - very important in Scarborough as most roads are double yellow. The accommodation was spacious and well laid out, even for the 6 of us. Kitchen appliances were all in good order, although we ate out for the most part. Cutlery and crockary were clean and modern. Everything was clean, neat and tidy. Beds were comfy and only the heat kept us from a good nights sleep - pushing 30 during the day. Bad points for the owner non of which would affect us staying again, just constructive feedback - although there is one shower and a separate bath with shower attachment it could do with a shower screen for the bath and a holder for the shower head as 6 people would have struggled with one shower had my wife and I not used the bath, shower head. The lock on the rear French doors is very difficult to lock/unlock. Finally the rear patio area could do with gates/boards to close it off for the dogs. All in all We were very happy with our choice and will stay again, which says it all.
