Nestled on the Yorkshire coast, within the North York Moors, Ravenscar is a beautiful coastal town. With miles of countryside and coastal walks to enjoy, Ravenscar is well placed for a relaxing cottage holiday.

Not only is this place graced with wonderful natural beauty, but it also has a rich and intriguing history. What our customers say about their holidays

  • Clare - Verified booking

We were looking for somewhere that could sleep 6, accommodate 2 dogs and 2 cars near Robin Hood’s Bay last minute ish as we booked mid May to stay the first week of July.

Only 4 of us stayed in the end due to other commitments. The cottage is lovely as is the courtyard and the instructions from the owners were great. A couple of reasons why I’ve given 4 rather than 5 stars, the decor is a bit dated, to be fair the photos are accurate so not a surprise, but a change of carpet and new tablecloths would make a huge difference as well as getting rid of the random plates in the window alcoves and the ornaments, there were also a few cobwebs. We stay in cottages pretty frequently and Byre Cottage is the only time we have come across single ply toilet paper, you don’t need to get triple ply, quilted, but I didn’t even know you could still buy single ply loo roll. There were teabags, coffee and sugar which is always nice. Not so nice was the empty salt, no hand soap, washing up liquid and one dishwasher tablet for a week’s stay. I don’t mind bringing these things, but when you don’t know they’re not provided that it’s annoying. Every other cottage we’ve ever stayed in has provided pump hand soap and either washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets or both. The hot taps in the en suite and the kitchen were difficult to stop as you would think it was off for it to then start a slow trickle and we would have to really turn it tightly to stop it. The shower in the en-suite was great, good temperature, good water pressure but would take on average 6 presses of the on/off switch to turn off which was weird. DVD, TV and dated skybox, there’s a DVD you can ‘ask’ to watch, maybe stretch to a copy for each cottage or hit the charity shop for a few classics, I appreciate DVDs are a thing of the past but when only the TV in the master bedroom had Netflix and Prime other options are better as I don’t want to sit on my bed watching tv with my family. We bought a few DVDs for 50p each when we were out and about as there wasn’t even iplayer on the tv in the living area. If tv in the bedroom had been downstairs that would have solved it. Some leaflets with details of local walks and attractions or a couple of books about the local area would have been nice to have. That said the welcome pack did say you could call at the house to ask for anything and replace later or buy it at the time. We accidentally left a dog bed but the £15 charge before P&P to return it to us was a bit steep so we will just buy another one. Directions to Robin Hood’s Bay were easy to follow and it’s a nice 30 minute walk to get there. Byre Cottage is a great base for exploring this part of the country and I would recommend it. A pleasant stay but with a few tweaks would have been a great stay.

On arrival was informed heating was turned off but told it got colld at night ?

?. we could however acess 15mins of heat from the electric fire by presing a button. On going to bed the sheets and duvet felt damp and cold and the mattress was cheap lumpy and well past its sell by date. all the other beds where the same. Dog Friendly poroperty ??. Once we found the information book we read the entry on dogs. No pet is to left alone in the property for any time and we would be asked to leave on return without a refund if we did. This is rediculous how can you take the dog everywhere with you. Free on site kennels didnt exist full of bins and rubbish. front and back doors patched up with fence panels and not painted. single armschair base had collapsed. shower curtain fell in the bath at first use [cheap extending thing. toilet loose on floor. Sky channels dont exist its freeview only which has a poor signal and breaks up all the time. The remote dosnt work on all the essential buttons so had to keep getting up and manually do it. Whole place just looks run down and skimping on the heat gives the place a musty smell. This cottage has no views of open countryside like the others a fact missing from the description in fact the windows look onto brick walls and are so small you have to have lights on in the daytime. Front Garden has no fence at one end so dog cant be let out without supervision. At just short of £500 for 3 nights expected better check out 9am amd check in 4pm is a bit strong too. British holiday in live all the beaches seem shut to dogs £45 in parking for 3 days. going abroad next year after 40 years of holidaying in the UK enoughs enough. I have pics to back up all i have said in this review. Although i,m sure it will be removed

Our stay at Dovecote was lovely.

However, we do feel that it would benefit from some constructive criticism: The overall cleanliness behind curtains, corners of rooms, etc were cobwells. The quality of the beds was poor. It gives the impression of a rustic style cottage but done on the cheap. The sofas desperately need replacing for comfort and aesthetics. The stairs need maintenance desparately. As it is a large property, you would assume that children would be staying and as we have previously experienced in other rentals, board games, books and DVDs have been available. Knowing the Yorkshire weather, sometimes days are needed to be home based and these would have been a great benefit. Also, the weather required us to go and buy clothes horses to dry our washing. A fifty pound expense where these have been part of the accommodation from Sykes. It may be useful for Sykes to give the owners a bit more feedback so that similar services are offered at all their properties. Also a welcome pack would be great. Other accommodation have provided these. e.g. milk, bread, eggs, biscuits, tea and coffee. It is a small expense to provide a warming impact on customers. A few small changes could encourage people to return year after year, rather than just once. The landlord and his wife are lovely. There is a fantastic play area for the children and the scenery is idyllic. A very well equipped kitchen.

This is an ideal location for a family holiday.

Four of us and our big dog stayed and my sister, her family and their dog had Forge cottage across the way. There was plenty of room for us all to eat together and hang out in the evenings (ours was a bit bigger with some garden space although theirs had the sea view). It was nice for my teens to have separate bedrooms and their own bathroom. A lot of places for 6 are really for 4 with 2 extras crammed in but this is properly spacious. The cottage was well equipped with everything you could need and it was all very clean. I can confirm the new mattresses are very comfortable. The owners are friendly and helpful but not intrusive (Our shower curtain fell down and Alan fixed it right away). The views from the cottage are amazing and there are lovely walks from the door. It’s an easy 30-40 mins downhill walk on the Cinder path to Robin Hoods Bay which is absolutely charming and you can walk along the beach (if the tide is out) or along the cliffs to Boggle Hole. The only real downside is that the track up to the farm is steep, unsurfaced and very bumpy. We would not have wanted to attempt it in winter or after dark but that didn’t limit us much on a summer family holiday.

We have just returned from the most wonderful stay at Bay View Cottage near Robin Hood’s Bay.

The setting is absolutely beautiful and the views are just incredible! The cottage is cosy, homely and very well equipped. It was also immaculately clean. There was always plenty of hot water available and the heating worked very efficiently. The kitchen has all the things you need to prepare and cook. The children also loved the climbing frame and slide in the lovely garden area behind the properties. The courtyard is very pretty and full of sun in the morning. It is also very spacious for parking cars and unloading luggage straight in through the kitchen door. There was no lugging of heavy items or boxes for any distance! The gorgeous beaches and pretty villages are a short drive from the cottage, though walkable for those who perhaps want to do so with dogs and without little ones. Our dog also felt very at home! Aldi and Sainsbury’s are an easy ten minute drive away. We absolutely loved our stay here and we will be back to enjoy more of the beautiful Yorkshire coast. Thank you so much to June and Alan for a fantastic holiday.
