What our customers say about their holidays

  • Chris - Verified booking

When we booked Speight Cottage, we were simply hoping for a comfortable, quiet escape, surrounded by beautiful countryside.

What we found when got to Scrogg House Farm exceeded all our expectations. The cottage was immaculate and clearly considerable care has gone into creating this first class accommodation. The kitchen was very well equipped with every utensil we could need for our long weekend provided. The living/dining room was an ideal size for two visitors and their dog, with log burner, new sofa, good tv and wifi. The bedroom had ample storage for clothes, with a hairdryer, mirrors and very comfortable large bed. Like the other rooms, the bathroom was decorated nicely. It was spacious, with a large powerful shower and towels/dressing gowns provided. Underfloor heating throughout ensured we were never cold despite some very inclement autumnal weather. On our arrival, we found scones with jam and cream waiting for us, with milk and bacon in the fridge and a fresh loaf and eggs generously supplied by Sam and Paul. The attention to detail and determination to impress their guests was not lost on us. The hot tub on the large south facing patio is the perfect vantage point to enjoy the incredible view over the fields, river and hills beyond. Having never experienced an outdoor hot tub before and it being October, we really didn’t expect to spend much time in it. How wrong we were! Other than sliding the cover off, slipping in and relaxing, there’s nothing more to do. Again, no expense has been spared as this was clearly a very good quality large hot tub, with bluetooth connection for your own music to play through its inbuilt speakers and an array of coloured lights. The temperature was perfect and we literally spent hours in it! Feeding Sam’s Highland cattle and donkeys and meeting the three dogs, hens and cockerel added to our enjoyment and we loved walking along the riverbank into Sedbergh. Undoubtedly, we’ll recommend Speight Cottage to our friends and family and we’re already looking forward to our next visit.

A beautifully converted barn in a stunning valley location.

The barn sits at the back of the owners farm house who are the perfect hosts friendly, knowledgeable and helpful, with their own four very friendly dogs, three highland cows, three donkeys and numerous chickens. From the patio / hot tub you have at stunning view over the farms field to the river and up the valley towards the fells. A short stroll over the field and you reach the river bank which at the time of writing was shallow. The footpath which runs across the farm parallel to the river gives access in each direction so you never even have to touch your car keys. You can turn right and a 25 minute flat river side walk you are into the village of Sedbergh which is a small town with a few nice pubs, Spar local and other amenities. Turn left and you can explore many miles of fell walking. We chose Speight Cottage because of the quiet location and the freedom it would give us with our dog Erik and we were not disappointed. As well as the enclosed gated garden, at the time of writing we had the use of two enclosed fields to exercise him although after a day walking along with all extra stimulation of sights and smells he was shattered. The owners Sam & Paul welcomed Erik as one of the family alway making a fuss of him. Happy dog, Happy Family, the best holiday .......

    This cottage is beautifully located.

Relaxing hot tub with scenic views. The owners are friendly, helpful and generous. They gave us delicious eggs from their hens. Well equipped and clean. Comfortable bed. Great for a relaxing weekend break. The owners have lovely friendly dogs, who are taken into the field below the cottage to exercise. They are the happiest most loved dogs you could ever meet. The cottage is great if you want a walking holiday. Sedbergh itself is a lovely town, within walking distance. Recommend Al Forno restaurant, if you like Italian food. Only warning about the area I would give is the taxis are very expensive. You could walk into town. We did not walk because it was a dark, damp November evening and we did not use the car because we shared a bottle of wine in the restaurant. If you do not want to walk into town, cook for yourself, or go in the summer when the evenings are light. The kitchen has good utensils. The cottage itself was perfect. This is our second stay and we would definately go back. Looking at next spring.

We had a fantastic week in Speight cottage!

From an easy arrival, with Sam showing us round and welcoming us, to finding some lovely treats in the cottage to relax and enjoy! The cottage was the perfect size for two people and their dog (who thoroughly enjoyed himself too), the chickens, donkeys and highland cows were wonderful to watch as well. The four dogs that love there were free roaming and very friendly, including their puppy Arty, who regularly enjoyed playing with our large Labrador. Local amenities are a short drive away, this can be walked too in about an hours round trip. The hot tub for us was an excellent addition, we were regularly visiting to relax- a little tip, it’s beautiful to sit in with a glass of wine and watch the sky get darker. Lots of lovely walks around, Cautley Spout very hard but extremely beautiful just up the road, and lots of areas to drive to. We had a fantastic time and this cottage has everything you need for a relaxing week away or an vase for your adventures. Would highly recommend and we will be back!

    A fabulous stay.

Everything about this place was spot on. All the lovely touches, welcome gifts, robes, lovely large towels, wifi. Very comfy bed. Just loved the hot tub what a treat sitting in there with those wonderful views and on a night under a strarry night sky saw shooting stars magical. Gorgeous river just at the bottom 2 min walk you can walk along it to Sedbergh town. Loads to do and see. Loved seeing the donkeys here. We loved seeing the owners dogs made me laugh came to see us on a morning tails wagging tapping on the door, we could shut the gate if we didn't want this no problem, but we loved their company. If you are looking for a relaxing peaceful stay with gorgeous views, plenty of walks, ideally located, then this is it. The owners are so welcoming lovely fresh eggs ,bacon and fresh bread left, and wonderful scones with jam and clotted cream what a treat. They are on hand if its required but leave you to it. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay.
