Dog Friendly Sawrey Holiday Cottages

Sawrey spans two delightful villages in the Lake District: Near Sawrey and Far Sawrey. Sawrey lies near the small Esthwaite Water and the much more famous Lake Windermere. Being in the heart of the Lake District gives you plenty of options for cycling, walking, hiking, and mountain biking, as well as water sports and boating. There are also some great attractions nearby such as Beatrix Potter's House, the Blackwell Arts & Crafts house museum, and of course plenty of outdoor adventure centres.

At Dog Friendly Cottages, we want your pup to enjoy your holidays as much as you do. That's why we have a great range of dog-friendly Sawrey cottages to choose from. If you want a big family holiday, try our spacious farmhouses or our modern barn conversions, with plenty of space for big groups. For something more private, we also have secluded cottages and luxury cabins where you can relax in front of a cosy fireplace.

All our Sawrey dog-friendly cottages make great bases for exploring the Lake District. Whether you want to hike through nearby Claife Heights or travel across the lake to see the attractions in Windermere town, you'll find plenty to do. For a great day out, try Claife Station lookout or the nearby Steamboat Museum.

What our customers say about their holidays

    What a beautiful location.

That's our fourth time staying on Esthwaite farm since June . First time in Bassenthwaite cottage. We found it fantastic as usual. The cottage itself seemed " more cottagey " somehow, having the panelled internal doors with the old fashioned latches. The wood burner is just fantastic. Sitting there in front of a roaring fire brought back memories of holidays in my youth in County Down. The first couple of days the weather was terrible but it didn't put a damper on things. It was great sitting in front of the fire and looking out at the rain. In fact once I woke up in the early hours, went into the living room, the fire was still blazing and there was my wife peering through the window and I thought, if this weather gets any worse I'm going to have to let her in. I found the fire very easy to light although some people have said they could have done with instructions?? The kitchen had all we needed. The cooker was great but we ate out most days. We went into Hawkshead and got some provisions. Teabags, milk and the like. But a few instructions on how to make a cup of tea would have been helpful !!!!! The scenery is spectacular. A recommended walk would be right round Esthwaite water. Through Hawkshead and then round the west side. About 5 miles but not very hilly. Highly recommended. And that's from an almost sixty something. Other great places to see are Tarn Hows, Hawkshead Hill and Grizedale forest is a must. There's a visitors centre with a cafe and also a pottery shop with a potter doing his stuff. This is where we picked up our ceramic poppies all hand painted. A must see place. All in all another great week. No matter how many times you go to the lakes there is always something new to see. We love the place, especially my wife who says she'd like to move to the Lake District. I said I thought it was a great idea but we should write to each other at least once a week. A lovely cottage in a super location.

The cottage is cosy and spacious. The flagstone hallway and large cloakroom with drying rack meant we didn’t need to worry about muddy boots and wet clothes. All the bedrooms are comfortable and the sitting room with log burner is great for relaxing after days out walking. It’s right in the centre of Hawkshead so very easy to pop out for food, drinks and shops. I’ve never stayed anywhere before with so much gear provided in the kitchen. When staying in other cottages attempting to cook has been challenging, hacking food with bad knives and very minimal equipment available but here there is absolutely everything you could possibly need. The owners are very generous, so much is provided including coffee, oils, a bottle of wine and nice soaps. There are loads of walks from the doorstep with the possibility of increasing the range by using the bus. We didn’t move the car all week. The village pubs, restaurants and cafes have good food with imaginative vegetarian choices and some vegan options. While we were there the vegetarian cafe didn’t have a chef so had a very limited menu. The coop is open long hours and is fine for basics, although the vegan range is extremely small. Thank you very much to the cottage owners for a fabulous week.

The cottage was fabulous and we had a wonderful stay from 20th Dec to 30th Dec 2024.

We really couldn't have asked for more and it was lovely to walk into the cottage and see how beautifully it had been decorated for Christmas, which was a lovely touch. The cottage is "genuinely" dog friendly and there was no list of rules which is often the case for cottages that purport to be dog friendly. It was perfect for our two active spaniels (the utility/boot room was perfect when returning home from walks with muddy boots and dogs!) I previously read a review about how well stocked the kitchen is and they weren't wrong - we regularly stay in holiday cottages and this was by far the best in relation to the kitchen equipment that is provided and the quality of appliances. The owners were also beyond generous with what they supplied in relation to cleaning/laundry products, coffee beans etc - the even left Christmas themed serviettes for us and a bottle of wine! The cottage was a great place to spend Christmas because it was so cosy and comfortable and situated in a lovely village with so much to do on our doorstep. Finally, we were fortunate enough to meet the owners who are really lovely people and wanted to ensure our stay was perfect. A big thank you for a wonderful, memorable Christmas

We go to the Lakes a lot, and always around bonfire night to get our dogs away from all the madness.

We have always stayed in cottages, so this was our first time in a lodge. I have to say this is the best accommodation we've ever stayed at, and I'd always look fo book a lodge first in future. It really did feel like a home from home and because there are only a small number of lodges it feels really private. The beds and bedding are top hotel quality, absolutely gorgeous. Everything worked like a dream and it was equipped to the best standard, you really couldn't ask for more. Really cosy and the wood burner was really efficient and we didn't use as much wood as we do back home. It's really spacious and the pictures just don't do it justice, we absolutely loved everything about this lodge. Some kind of bucket or something would be helpful to clean muddy paws, but we cobbled something together to make it work. Definitely get a supermarket delivery if you can, there were a number of deliveries around us while we were there. Access is really easy. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this gorgeous lodge to anyone and we'd definitely come again. Thank you for letting us stay in your gorgeous home from home.

The property's location was perfect for me and also dog friendly too.

So peaceful (silence and no light poution), beautiful views, and not too far from a couple of pubs and the village of Hawkshead. The field adjoining the property was perfect to let my dog Minnie, have a safe run around. I stopped in the Coniston accommodation which was perfect for me, very clean and very comfortable. I had previously read reviews that highlighted that you could hear some noise from the flat above but i accepted that risk when I booked. My lived experience was that during the first 4 days (of my 6 day stay) I heard very little. My last 2 nights was slightly more challenging though. Dont get me wrong, I didn't feel like I had part of the Riverdance dance troop staying above me but the level of noise did increase. Im not sure what the owners can do, other than let the flat above be very aware that not wearing clogs would be more than appreciated by those downstairs. I would advise that if you are easily irritated by any noise from above, then the Coniston isnt for you. I will be going back for sure.
