Hop in the car for just over 20 minutes and head to Wrest Park Gardens. With over 90 acres of historic woodland and gardens to sniff about in, your pup will look forward to curling up in front of the fire at the end of the day! Alternatively, 15 minutes in the car will see you experiencing the ruined majesty of Houghton House. Built in the 17th Century, it’s an ideal day out for the family. While your dog will need to be on a lead, the expansive grounds are perfect for the most curious of canines.
You might want to put the frying pan down for an evening and eat out. Bedford is superbly accommodating for those with dogs and pubs such as The Plough, The Embankment, and The Park Pub & Kitchen will give your pup a warm welcome.
Dog-friendly things to do
With a rich history and lots to see and do, Bedford is a real hidden gem just an hour from the centre of London. However, if you’re taking a break with your faithful friend, you’re going to need a bit more than excellent shopping and amazing architecture! For those who’ve never been to the area before, we’ve put together a few of our favourite places for dogs and their owners:
Ampthill Great Park
Little more than 20 minutes’ drive from Bedford, Ampthill Great Park is an ideal place to take the whole family. You’ll find play areas for the kids, a dog-friendly café, and some astonishing woodlands to snuffle around in. A beautiful place to visit at any time of year.
Coopers Hill
Not too far from Ampthill Great Park, Coopers Hill offers terrain of a completely different sort. While you won’t find much in the way of trees, you’ll find acres of open heathland; perfect for an off-the-leash run-around! With occasional hills to gallop up, it’s an ideal place to let over-enthusiastic pups burn off some energy.
Marston Vale Millennium Country Park
Just 15 minutes’ drive from the town centre, Marston Vale Millennium Country Park makes an ideal family day out. While your dog will need to be on a lead for the greater part, there are some superb forests to wander around in and an exciting array of wildlife for wannabe Attenboroughs to observe!
