Let’s face it – we all love a good sunny day out, but we also know British summers have their moods. One minute it’s sunbathing weather, the next minute it’s pitter-patter rain on the window. That’s where indoor attractions come in. They let you make the most of your day out, even when the weather lets you down.
But there’s a problem. Dog-friendly indoor spots aren’t exactly a dime a dozen, so it can be tricky finding something to do with your pup in tow. Still, we’ve worked hard to sniff out the best options - the attractions that are perfect for keeping your four-legged buddy entertained when the weather’s not on your side. We've had to stretch the rules a touch, and include some sheltered outdoor spots, but they’re absolutely worth it.
Whether you’re on a spontaneous adventure or just need an excuse to avoid the drizzle, these indoor (and partially sheltered) attractions are the best places to keep both you and your dog entertained. So grab your coat, leash up your pup and get ready for a day of dog-friendly indoor fun!
If you’ve ever wanted to explore a cave system while your dog tags along, Cheddar Caves is your spot. These stunning limestone caves, which sit under the rolling hills of Somerset, have a long history.
With underground walks and epic views, it’s an indoor adventure (that’s mostly sheltered) your dog will love. And if you don’t mind the weather outside then the gorge walks nearby are unreal. Just keep your dog on a lead and check in advance for the specific dog-friendly areas.
Who says you can’t take your dog to the movies? Picturehouse Cinemas might just be your new go-to for a cosy, dog-friendly film night. These cinemas have special screenings where dogs are welcome to snuggle with you while you watch the latest flick.
You’re still encouraged to treat your dog like a VIP guest, so snacks and drinks are a must (for both of you). It’s the perfect chilled-out day with your furry best friend by your side.
Okay, it’s technically outdoors, but the Volks Railway in Brighton is the perfect rainy day attraction for you and your dog. The charming train runs along the seafront, offering shelter from the elements while you enjoy a scenic ride.
The route takes you past the iconic Brighton Pier, and you’ll be cosy and relatively dry inside as you take in the sights. Dogs are welcome, so hop on the next train and enjoy the views (without getting too wet).
The only thing better than a good game of bowling? Doing it with your dog by your side. Dog Bowl, in Manchester, is a pet-friendly haven where you can enjoy a few rounds of ten-pin bowling while your pup chills out next to you.
With delicious food, craft beers and a few strikes under your belt, it’s the kind of spot that’ll keep both you and your furry friend happy. No need to leave your dog behind for a night out – this place has you covered. And yes, they will provide a dog (water) bowl.
For those days when only a good film will do, Manchester's Ducie Street Warehouse is another good option. This mini cinema claims to be the first that welcomed pups (during select screenings only!), and is tucked away in the heart of the city.
You and your pup can snuggle up with a bowl of popcorn and enjoy an independent film, all in a laid-back and relaxed setting. Just make sure to check for the dog-friendly screenings.
If your dog enjoys a good market vibe, head to St George’s Market in Belfast. It’s one of the best indoor markets in the UK, with everything from fresh food to artisan goods. It’s not only dog-friendly, but it's also got a lively atmosphere that your pup will love.
Stroll through the stalls, check out local treats and enjoy the variety of smells and sounds. Dogs are welcome to wander the market provided they’re on a lead, so make sure to bring them along for the adventure.
While Windermere Lake Cruises might seem like an outdoor adventure, these boats are covered, sheltered and the perfect way to take in the beauty of the Lake District on a rainy day.
You and your dog can enjoy the view of the stunning lake and surrounding hills while staying dry and cosy inside the boat. It’s a relaxing cruise with your four-legged friend, where you can sit back, relax and watch the world float by.
If you’re into history and quirky finds, the Museum of Power, in Essex, is a fascinating indoor destination for you and your dog. It’s a museum dedicated to the history of power generation and industrial heritage, so expect plenty of fascinating exhibits (and some seriously cool machines).
Your dog is more than welcome to explore alongside you, so enjoy a day of education with your pup in tow – it’s one attraction that’s both informative and pet-friendly.
For book lovers, Barter Books in Alnwick is a dream come true. This legendary giant second-hand bookshop is housed in a former railway station and welcomes dogs to roam around the shelves with you. The only off-limit areas for pooches are parts of the café.
It’s the perfect place to spend a quiet afternoon, browsing books and enjoying the cosy atmosphere. With a cup of tea in hand and your dog by your side, it’s a relaxing way to get lost in a book – or a dozen.
Still looking for another option? You can always check out the cosiest dog-friendly pubs for a relaxed afternoon, or try a sheltered rainy-day walk to stretch the legs with your pup.
