What our customers say about their holidays
Lorraine - Verified booking
We stayed at Devine Lodge, Callington in Cornwall after finding a last minute deal.
This was great for us as our motorhome had broken down the week before in Scotland and we didn't want to waste the second week of our holidays. We arrived early and we were advised that we could enter the property by the cleaning team, it had been left very clean and we really liked how all the crockery and cutlery had been put through the dishwasher for us to empty. The lodge had everything we needed and the double room had a comfortable bed. We took our own towels which was just as well as the ones left in the property weren't particularly clean. The property was nicely layed out and the lights on the balcony looked lovely on an evening. The welcome pack was extremely informative although we had to Google how to get the TV working and it kept randomly switching off. The internet was poor quality along with the TV signal however we spent little time at the property and made the most of our visit to Cornwall. Plenty to see and do. Each evening when we returned we were left without a parking space, it is advertised as having two, perhaps it would be a good idea to have this highlighted in the parking area. Our first evening we visited the on site pub which served a good selection of drinks although a little expensive. We decided to stay for a meal where I opted for the halloumi burger which was pleasant enough and my husband had the chicken Kiev which was served to him raw!! We only discovered this once he'd eaten some of it. Fortunately he wasn't ill. They apologized and refunded the money for his meal only. Each evening when we arrived back at the property we noticed a very strong smell of damp, we noticed this got a little better after having the heating on however the double bedroom was particularly bad where we noticed damp patches on the ceiling, we also noticed that the curtain tie backs were loose as was the bath panel. We hoped that these issues were due to it being the end of the summer season. This is a good location however I'd have been extremely disappointed if I'd paid full price and wouldn't recommend this accommodation to family or friends

Whereas there were positives about the house we were disappointed with the following: - We were there for a 2 week holiday and had expected a mid-stay clean, and change of bath towels and bedding.
On calling Sykes during our first week we discovered that this wasn't part of the holiday deal but the member of staff that we spoke to said that they could arrange for a clean on Saturday 3rd August - all we needed to do was leave the key in the key box when we left for the day. We did this but disappointingly arrived back at the end of the day on Saturday to find that no-one had been (we also left the key on Monday 5th just in case - still no one came). We ended up cleaning the bathrooms and washing the bath towels ourselves although there were no adequate cleaning cloths nor any bleach or toilet cleaner. - the throws on the 2 sofas were very dirty and pretty disgusting - we washed these for the next guests - we arrived on Saturday 27th July to find the outside bin overflowing with rubbish from the previous guests (not a great first impression) - there was no recycling system in place at all. We ended up sorting our own recycling and taking it to the local Sainsbury's where there was a recycling facility - some of the cutlery and crockery was very dirty - we couldn't get the dishwasher to work at all whilst we were there (there was no instruction manual in the house for us to refer to) - in relation to a previous guests complaint about the loose slate tile on the step outside, we did receive a message from someone at Sykes to say that this would be fixed - they said someone would come on Saturday 3rd August between 12 and 2pm; no one came to fix this during this time nor any other time during our stay

We had a lovely stay in Sandseekers Barn which is in a brilliant location very close to the coastal path to Bedruthan Steps and a pleasant (albeit steep) walk to the beach at Mawgan Porth. The area is stunning, we didn't want to leave and neither did the dog who enjoyed daily walks on the beach and coastal path. There's a great shop in Mawgan Porth, a couple of cafes and pub/ hotel which more than suited our needs. We didn't venture far the whole week which was just what we wanted although Newquay, Padstow and Wadebridge are not far at all. The barn is set over 3 floors and was really warm, comfortable and well equipped. Everything is modern and tastefully decorated; the beds and bedding were incredibly comfortable and showers fantastic and powerful. Having two seating areas is a real bonus for a multigenerational stay and good wi-fi was much appreciated! The garden was useful for the dog only and could do with a bit of brightening up if it were to be an area to sit outside in. A few personal touches like cushions, welcome pack and local information were missing but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again. Thank you so much, we loved Sandseekers Barn.

This cottage was booked at very short notice due to Covid lockdowns at our planned destination.
Sykes staff were extremely helpful & efficient & we were delighted that our holiday was able to go ahead. Devine cottage was perfect for us to enjoy a relaxing week. The site was quiet & peaceful & central for days out. Itâs ideal for families & very dog friendly. It was lovely to sit out on the balcony, weather permitting & listen to the owls in the evening & woodpeckers of a morning. The very helpful reception staff advised us of pool accessibility & my daughter was very pleased that this facility was available to us. The lodge itself was comfortable & clean & the kitchen contained all the utensils we needed. We loved the decor & upside down layout. However, there was no hand soap & the only towels provided were two bath towels for three of us to share! I think this could have been down to the last minute booking though. Weâd definitely like to return & are pleased that Covid gave us the opportunity to explore an area that we wouldnât necessarily have chosen otherwise

A quirky cottage - as a listed building it has its challenges.
The water pressure and plumbing was very good. The decor, kitchen and bathrooms were modern chic. The lounge was nicely furnished but the larger settee difficult to sit comfortably for any length of time. The bedroom with the bath en suite was awkward to get around because of the floor not being level. The bed not level was not conducive to comfortable sleep. A wedge had been put under one leg but still not enough. Bathroom very small. Single bedded room floor, again, was not level so drawers on the bed kept opening. A good sized garden. Outside maintenance needs attention. We had a good stay - we can manage most things and do not like to be picky. We have a 200yr old cottage. Anybody who is not fit and agile may find Clahar Cottage too much of a challenge. Having to leave by 9am was too early. Other cottages we have rented have been10am.
