What our customers say about their holidays

Herdwick Heaf Review My partner and I stayed at Herdwick Heaf during the latter part of November.
The overall feel of the cottage is one of cosiness and comfort. The cottage was nice and warm, and fixtures and fittings were finished to a high standard. However, we did feel there were one or two shortcomings: 1, By far the biggest thing we would say is that the stairs are very steep, and the 'landing' immediately at the top of the stairs is particularly so. The owners have made considerable effort to mitigate this, installing hand rails and a stair gate at the top of the stairs. It would be useful if there was a photograph of the landing and stairs on the website. Our advice to anyone who had any doubts in their balance and mobility NOT to stay here. 2, The back yard is not actually private, but is a shared space between houses along the terrace, and is entirely hard standing. There is no gate or fencing at all, so, it is not at all safe to let your dog out. Since our pooch is a little bit of a sociopath, we had to tentatively take him out on his lead. 3, The TV in the lounge receives its' reception by Freeview satellite, which, in itself is not a problem, but, it does mean that the channels are rather sporadically numbered. In order to alleviate frustration, it would be good if the owners could compile a list of the more popular channels that visitors may use. There are Apps on the TV too, so, this issue can be overcome to a certain extent. 4, It would be good if there were was another set of crockery/ cutlery. The cottage sleeps 3, and there is only 3 plates, dishes etc, which means it is necessary to wash up after every meal, or even every snack! Ennerdale Bridge itself is a beautiful area, there are loads of great walks nearby and the food at The Fox and Hounds and Shepherds Arms is excellent!

We had no access to any of the facilities promised by yourselves.
No spa, no sauna, no gym. Very little was provided in the property. There was out of date milk in the fridge and the room with two single beds smelled of damp and the ceiling in the lounge/kitchen was stained badly. The bathroom had broken tiles and the seal around the shower wasnât done properly and the grout between the floor tiles was broken and coming away. Which probably meant that water was ingressing the ceiling below. Only one bath towel was provided per person for the whole stay. No instructions were provided as to how to use the heating or hot water so I had to text the owner which meant we couldnât shower or use hot water after a 6 hour drive to the property. I tried to use the hoover to clean the carpet in the lounge and the Hoover stunk of dust. The pillows were flat and no spare ones were provided also one of my pillows had black marks on it. Finally, the listing also stated that there was a garden but there isnât a garden, just a small grassed area in front of the property with a bench that was too rotting to sit to. The area was perfect to holiday in though and the site was quiet. No parking was available adjacent to the property and when they bring passes back into force anyone with a car renting this property will not be allowed to park because the owner wonât pay for âaffiliationâ to give customers access to the site facilities. I really feel we should be given a refund given that the owner did not provide any of the benefits listed in your description and we paid a lot more than others with a better standard of accommodation who had access to facilities.

Sykes advert is misleading:- The advert states the property is dog friendly and has garden patio provision.
The reality is - the cottage itself is dog friendly inside but the outdoor space is only a hard standing which is not enclosed or safe for pets as it is shared with neighbouring properties and is open to the main road. There is no mention in the advert of the very steep internal staircase. There are only 11 steps to get to the first level as apposed to the standard 13 !! Once you reach the top there is a very narrow landing to access the bathroom and bedrooms. Whilst, fortunately we were both mobile enough to be able to cope with them many others less mobile would not be able to get upstairs. There was no provision provided for hanging coats or putting/storing/drying wet boots and shoes. This is very surprising given the location of the cottage and the outdoor activities the area attracts. This cottage could so easily be a cosy, comfortable retreat if there was more comfortable soft seating and higher quality bed mattress (very springy and bouncy). Until these issues are addressed we would not stay again and not recommend this property.

We were so lucky with the crisp sunny weather and had a lovely week.
The house was warm and comfortable as described. The forecast was for very cold weather so we took extra blankets but didn't need them. The stairs are steep but we were prepared. There was always plenty of hot water and all kitchen facilities worked fine though you would need to read the instructions booklet for the cooker, washing machine and all singing microwave. Both local pubs were great but we preferred the Fox and Hounds. Beautiful fell, mountain and lake walking, Ennerdale is a quiet but delightful valley and everyone was very friendly. One or two minor issues (which spoilt nothing): a larger firmer bed but that would reduce overall bedroom space; a radio in the kitchen would be a good touch and an ice cube tray in the freezer(there is an ice bucket), but overall, a lovely place. Thank you

Our 5th visit to the wonderful county of Northumberland, our 1st visit here at this lovely, spacious apartment “Wild Goose”. We have re-visited Berwick where we have fond memories having stayed there the 1st two times. We made our usual trip into Seahouses and also visited Craster for the 1st time with a lovely walk to Dunstanburgh. Bamburgh is as lovely as ever, we always enjoy our visit to The Copper Kettle, having stayed in the village once before. The highlight of the week though had to be sightings of dolphin packs passing along the beach, twice here in the evening towards Holy Island and once outside the harbour at Craster. Thanks, Jill, for a fantastic week and letting our daughter come along for a couple of nights for Father’s Day.
