Dog Friendly Okehampton Holiday Cottages

Okehampton is a historic town in West Devon, just near the boundary of Dartmoor National Park. Okehampton is most famous for the extensive castle ruins that perch above the town. Visit the Dartmoor Life Museum or the unique Meldon Viaduct. If you want to go hiking, cycling or birdwatching you'll find plenty of options on Dartmoor. Take an invigorating walk around the Nine Stone Circle or hike up Steeperton Tor, or you could even go seeking the Beast of Dartmoor.

At Dog Friendly Cottages, we know how important it is for your canine companion to be by your side for your holidays. That's why we offer a great range of dog-friendly cottages in Okehampton. If you want a big family holiday, try our airy farmhouses or modern barn conversions with plenty of space for large groups to gather around a roaring fire. For something more private we also have romantic cottages and luxury cabins with hot tubs.

All our Okehampton dog-friendly cottages make great bases for exploring the town and Dartmoor. For a bracing hike, try Lydford Gorge and the Whitelady Waterfall. For a quiet day in town, try the Victorian shopping arcade, or get lunch in any of the quaint cafes the town has to offer.

What our customers say about their holidays

Here are some tips for locating this charming cottage: When you consult the map on Sykes Cottages, which mistakenly estimates it to be before the right-hand bend.

Be sure not to stop at the first thatched cottage you see and the property you need is actually located at the very end of the road (about 1.5miles in), which, like many lanes in Devon, may appear unclassified. The property’s What3words address is: ///shipyards.nurture.wisdom. As you turn in and drive down the gravel driveway, you’ll find the cottage with a large gate in front of you, surrounded by a few other properties on the land, one of which belongs to the owners. We were warmly welcomed by Malcolm, who we saw each morning as he let the ducks out to protect them from foxes. Malcolm is friendly and a treasure trove of local knowledge. After a while, we were also welcomed by Zoe who popped her head over the fence to greet us. Adjacent to the property is a large field that leads to the Tarka Trail. Most mornings, our dog loved playing in the field until the sheep arrived. Even then, Malcolm generously offered us access to the field that separates our property from theirs, which was incredibly kind, especially on days when our dog needed extra exercise. A note for dog owners: dogs are not allowed upstairs (if your furry friend typically sleeps with you). We also noticed the house rules about not leaving dogs unattended, as there were some noticeable scratches on the doorway, its likely this is to prevent damage from pets that struggle in unfamiliar places or have separation anxiety. The information book provides some options for nearby eateries. We particularly enjoyed The Kings Arms in Winkleigh—just a heads up, though: most local restaurants don’t serve food until 5:30 p.m., and reservations are often necessary. We didn’t explore too many local dining options, as the cottage is conveniently located for trips to North and South Devon and even Cornwall. One unsuspecting highlight was the Puffing Billy Cafe in Torrington, about 30 minutes away, where we indulged in a delightful cream tea too! For the extremely light sleepers in our group, the sound of the buzzing cesspit and the creaky stairs did disrupt their rest, so if you're a light sleeper too you may opt for ear buds. We recommend discussing your return times with the owners too, particularly as the winter months approach, if you'd prefer a hot shower or bath on your return to adjust the times for a warm one. Fortunately, Malcolm was quick to accommodate the changes for us. The cottage is well-equipped with everything you could need for a comfortable stay. Based on previous reviews, we opted to bring a few of our own items, as it noted that some essentials weren't provided. However, there is a Coop in nearby Hatherleigh. The surroundings are stunning, and the night sky is absolutely breathtaking! All in all, thank you for a lovely stay in such a beautiful place—it’s incredibly spacious and perfect for dogs!

If you are looking for a wonderful, peaceful place to stay on a break away, Langdale Lodge is a must.

Set on a farm, you have a beautiful view from the living area looking out on to fields, lake and farm animals. We stayed during winter, which at times was quite a wet period but it was lovely, we chose to stay in and lit the fire which warms up the lodge and makes it nice and cosy. One of the most amazing things about the lodge is the wildlife cameras that you can watch. The farm is blessed with lots of wild animals and Mike kindly sends updates if there is anything exciting that comes through during the night. We spent most of our time when in the lodge with it running, periodically checking out what there was about and saw owls, mice, birds, geese, ducks and a rabbit. Those staying over the spring period will have such fun watching the owl houses too if there are owlets! The lodge has great facilities, the bed is comfortable, shower has good power, you can cook using the all in one and stove top. The settee is amazing as it’s a recliner, so you can sit back and relax whilst looking out of the huge window or watching the TV, which has the ability to login to any streaming services you might wish to. The wifi is good if you need to use. If going in better weather, there’s a lovely outdoor seating area on the decking. It’s all enclosed which was perfect for us and our little dog to be out in. We were made to feel very welcome upon arrival and even got to purchase some eggs from the hens on the farm. Thank you also to Mike who allowed us to say hello to the some of the farm animals too which was really special. We look forward to hopefully coming back again in a warmer period to enjoy all the fun things Devon and the lodge has to offer in a different season. Highly recommend staying here.

10/10 stay at The Annex at Larkbeare. The location is situated perfectly within Dartmoor and has 360 breathtaking views - the access to other parts of Dartmoor for hikes, lakes and reservoirs is incredibly easy. The place itself was clean and organised with a very cozy feel - and you can still enjoy the views of Dartmoor from the warmth of indoors as the entire property is filled with huge windows, letting natural light cascade through. Had everything I needed during my time at the Annex, the kitchen is kitted out with all the equipment one could need. The living area was extremely spacious for myself and Reggie (chocolate lab) with use of their smart TV and DVD collection to unwind of an evening. Large bedroom with comfy bed, can’t ask for more! The couple who own The Annex, Graham and Clare were both lovely, friendly and very welcoming. Also extremely knowledgeable of the area - offering tips on all the best places to see during my stay. We chatted for ages over a cuppa and watched a truly spectacular sunset - the area is spoilt for choice on beautiful scenery! The local town is only a short drive away and has all your necessities for your stay, plus there is loads of small villages dotted around with some excellent pubs too. Reggie had tonnes of places for walks, swimming and running about! He was so knackered by the end of his stay - very accommodating for pets which you don’t often see at holiday rentals, thoughtful touch. Whenever I’m in the area again, I will definitely make sure I stay at The Annex. Can’t wait to return already!

We originally booked this venue in order to escape from some very dusty carpentry work at our home for a few days.

We needed an accessible building in a quiet area with good facilities and reviews. How LUCKY we were! From the cream tea waiting in the fridge on our arrival to the fabulous, easy to use, wood burning stove. From incredible scenic views through our picture window to the livestream wildlife camera coverage system. The facilities really are first class here. The owner, Mike, is always contactable but never intrusive and always happy to help. We really enjoyed watching the wild birds visiting the feeders from the covered decking area and the antics of a flock of wild geese who seemed to spend much of their time in the paddock between the cabin and the lake below. We didn't do much sightseeing because we already had everything we needed in this wonderfully private and beautiful place. However, we did buy plenty of delicious local farm food within a 5 mile drive, after which a walk to explore the many tracks and fields was most welcome. Don't hesitate to book this very special place if you get the chance! Kind regards, Rosie and Juls.

    Absolutely fab!

The owners are lovely too and provide some basics - tea, coffee, milk, fruit juice, some fresh tomatoes and a scrummy home baked loaf. The Hut is SO cute and romantic and so many little touches - my puppy loved the dog bed and leapt straight in! It’s lovely and quiet, with only the odd rumble of traffic if the wind blows towards you. It’s mainly the tweeting of birds and splashing of the river you’ll hear. There’s a couple of owls that hoot away every night and the cockerel will crow each morning. Blissful. If you don’t have a car, bear in mind that there are no facilities in Jacobstowe itself. Busses are every half hour or so, in either direction. The nearest supermarket is in Hatherleigh. Our one and only disappointment was the fact the nearest pub - in Exbourne - was closed due to Covid which is just unfortunate timing. We both really needed this total break from ‘real life’ and loved every minute. We were hoping for a new lockdown to be enforced before we could go home!! Even the puppy was sad to leave.
