The Thatched Cottage in Westport offers a charming and traditional stay with stunning views and a peaceful setting. Guests appreciate the warm welcome, including the occasional treat of scones, and the cosy atmosphere provided by the peat fire. While some find the cottage's historical quirks endearing, others note the need for updates and maintenance.
Most guests found the cottage clean and comfortable, with only a few mentioning issues with cleanliness such as cobwebs and dirty plates. The positive remarks suggest a generally high standard of cleanliness.
The location is praised for its stunning views, peacefulness, and proximity to local attractions. Some guests were surprised by the closeness to other houses, but this did not significantly detract from the overall experience.
Guests generally found the cottage cosy, especially with the stove lit. However, some mentioned challenges with low door lintels and sloping floors, and a few found the space cramped, particularly for larger groups.
The facilities received mixed reviews. While some guests were satisfied with the rustic charm, others pointed out issues with outdated or inadequate facilities, such as the bathroom and kitchen. Maintenance concerns were also raised.
The hosts are often mentioned as attentive and welcoming, with some guests receiving scones upon arrival. However, as these gestures are not consistently reported by all guests, they should be considered a delightful bonus rather than an expectation.
The Thatched Cottage is a traditional-style Irish cottage set on the outskirts of the sleepy hamlet of Drummin, 10 miles from Westport in County Mayo. Dating back over 200 years the cottage has a number of quirky features, which add to its charm and appeal, including uneven and sloping floors, low-height door frames and a traditional Irish fireplace complete with woodburner. The property provides compact, simple but comfortable accommodation with an open plan living area, cosy family bedroom and additional smaller bedroom. Outside, the lawned garden with seating offers views of the nearby mountains, while excellent walking and hiking are available from the door. Nearby Westport is an official access point for the award-winning off road cycling and walking trail, Great Western Greenway. This traffic-free route runs between Westport and Achill Island along the route of the old railway line, and enjoys some magnificent scenery including along the Clew Bay coastline. The Thatched Cottage provides lovely character accommodation in a pleasant rural area, and is a perfect base for the Great Western Greenway.
Winding leafy lanes, honeysuckle and wild roses in season, hilly areas and incredible views characterise the rural village of Drummin 10 miles south of Westport in County Mayo. Take a walk to the top of the hills to enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views across Clew Bay to Clare Island, once the stronghold of Gráinne Uaile, the Pirate Queen. There are many fascinating and beautiful places to visit in this part of Ireland. Go fishing in the rivers such as the Erriff River around eight miles away, and the Delphi River in the Doolough Valley, about six miles away. The lively town of Westport nearby is proud of its rich Irish heritage and offers an excellent selection of shops, restaurants, pubs and traditional music. If you love the outdoors, head for nearby Croagh Patrick and its bracing hikes and spectacular views.
