About this property

Swinside Cottage is a delightful one-bedroom rural retreat set at the foot of Catbells, with superb views over the unspoilt Newlands Valley. The cottage is one of five, former mill workers' cottages nestling on the outskirts of the hamlet of Stair. It is a fifteen-minute drive to the bustling market town of Keswick and a couple of miles to Braithwaite with its village shop. The well-loved Swinside Inn is an easy half mile walk. The Cottage, which sits in idyllic countryside, has been beautifully refurbished in a modern cottage style. Perfect romantic retreat.

There is plenty to see and do - walk from the door for about a mile and a half to catch the launch in to Keswick, and the Newlands Valley Activity Centre is close by where any number of activities such as ghyll scrambling, kayaking, abseiling and pony trekking can be undertaken. There is some of the best hill walking in the area, lake cruises, country rambles, golf, tennis and a whole host of visitor attractions that are open all year. The picturesque surrounding scenery is a joy in any season with wonderful lake and mountain views to be enjoyed throughout the National Park.

Sit in the gorgeous bay window of your bright and spacious open plan space and admire the appealing roof lines, open fire with comforting log burner, welcoming dining area and fully fitted kitchen. You are sure to think of cosy romantic evenings in this lovely retreat. Step outside to your patio and enjoy the large, shared landscaped gardens. Climb the open staircase to find your large and characterful bedroom with king-size bed nestling below an original beamed ceiling and en-suite newly fitted modern bathroom with washer/dryer.

You will have a choice of many walks right from your doorstep. Explore the Newlands Valley, regarded as one of the most picturesque and quiet valleys in the Lake District, with a huge variety of routes including relaxing, low level valley walks and challenging fell walks such as Causey Pike, Barrow, Robinson and Catbells.

For a more relaxing day, drive to Keswick to browse the specialist shops. Walk from the centre through Hope Park to the shore of beautiful Derwentwater, have a bite to eat at the Theatre by the Lake’s café, then enjoy a romantic lake cruise.

The popular town of Keswick is the holiday centre of the North of the Lake District and has plenty to offer the visitor at any time of year. The town boasts numerous shops and restaurants to suit all tastes, as well as offering miniature golf, excellent parks, the famous Theatre by the Lake, a charming cinema, the Pencil Museum, a climbing wall, fishing and great mountain biking opportunities, whilst the beautiful lake of Derwentwater at the head of the stunning Borrowdale Valley is only a few minutes walk from the town centre. Nearby, between Braithwaite and Buttermere is the beautiful Newlands Valley, while picturesque Bassenthwaite Lake is well worth a visit. From a gentle countryside ramble to a challenging hike up Skiddaw or the famous Catbells, there really is something for everyone. Visit Castlerigg Stone Circle, the Jennings Brewery and Mirehouse, a grand house and gardens on the shores of the Bassenthwaite Lake, or take a fabulous boat trip around Derwentwater. With plenty of attractions for the kids, lovely parks and the nearby Lake District Wildlife Park this is a great Lakeland destination whatever the time of year.

Always warm, clean and welcoming thanks to the owners and the cleaning team. So many nice touches and well equipped, particularly for such a small cottage. Looking forward to coming back in July!

Not sure what earlier guest meant by “20 commuters an hour” ? I have stayed there several times at different times of year and no such problem! Visitors yes, and the activity centre generates some activity but nothing to spoil the pleasure of being there. Microwave dishes a big help. Cake a definite plus so thank you! Happy Christmas.

The views are magnificent and the facilities while not extensive were very adequate. I very much enjoyed my stay and would visit again in the future.
