Thirlmere Cottage in Keswick offers a peaceful and scenic getaway with stunning views and cosy comfort. Guests appreciate the property's warmth, cleanliness, and the convenience of walks right from the doorstep. While some guests suggest the cottage could benefit from modernisation and better kitchen equipment, the charm of the location and the overall experience seem to outweigh these concerns.
The cottage generally receives positive remarks for cleanliness, though some guests have noted the presence of cobwebs and dust in certain areas. The occasional mention of a damp smell and a smelly living room suggests room for improvement.
The location is highly praised for its beauty, tranquillity, and proximity to local walks and attractions. Guests are consistently pleased with the picturesque surroundings and the convenience of having nature on their doorstep.
Guests find the beds comfortable and the cottage cosy, particularly noting the warmth provided by the heating system. However, some guests mention that the property feels cold and damp at times, which slightly affects the overall comfort score.
While the kitchen is well-equipped and the property is appreciated for its amenities, several reviews mention the need for better kitchen utensils, modernisation, and maintenance of items like the fridge and TV. The lack of Wi-Fi and phone signal is also noted, though some see this as a positive for a 'switch off' experience.
There is insufficient information to assess thoughtfulness as it pertains to gifts, as reviews do not consistently mention them. Therefore, while guests have suggested improvements in facilities, there is no clear evidence of gifts being provided or expected.
This traditional and welcoming cottage enjoys one of the most awe inspiring positions imaginable. At the foot of a mountain and so very close to the southern shores of Thirlmere, this is paradise for those looking to for a quiet retreat in the Lake District. Walkers can enjoy Silver How, Helm Crag, Helvellyn and the Central and Eastern Fells from the door, while cyclists can try out a section of the Sustran National Cycle Route.
After an energetic and busy day, guests will love to gather in the cosy sitting room. Sink into the comfortable sofa by the open fire and slate fireplace or keep an eye out for the local deer, red squirrels and Herdwick sheep. The view is extraordinary. The farmhouse kitchen is a delight. Honister slate worktops and floor, smart fitted units and a large farmhouse table perfect for family meals. Thirlmere Cottage has two lovely bedrooms. The master bedroom comes with en-suite bathroom, a double bed and views across the garden, while the second room can be arranged with a double bed or two single beds. Although slightly smaller, this room has use of a dressing room and the family bathroom with a shower over the bath, basin and wc. The cottage’s large furnished patio is a wonderful place in which to enjoy a morning coffee, a BBQ or simply watching out for the red deer.
Grasmere is the nearest village and here guests will find everything they need. Local shops, supermarkets, tea rooms and of course, Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage and the famous Grasmere Gingerbread shop.

Very warm, cosy and spacious. Had everything you need but lacked a few necessities. I know it states self catering however, I have used Sykes and other dog friendly cottages for many yrs and have never come across a property that leaves you absolutely no extras. We arrived late, in bad weather, had no matches or wood (thank goodness there wasnt a power cut). There were no beverages, salt & pepper, no bin bags, not even a dish cloth. We had no idea where to buy wood & missed the fire which hadn't been cleaned out anyway. The double room smelt so bad of damp we moved into the other. Also, there was decorating stuff left in the wardrobes which could be a safety hazard if children stayed. I would not recommend it for 4 people. Just for the record, everywhere else we have stayed have left a welcome pack and a few basics, even if they did state "self catering".

Clean, tidy and warm, a great base for exploring the Lake District. Thank you also for the help from Heart of the Lakes when I managed to lock myself out of the house. I would visit again
