Footpaths lead directly from the doorstep to both – enjoy a leisurely steam yacht ride along the lake, or head in the opposite direction for views from the Old Man’s summit that stretch as far as the coast. Refuel at the fine choice of inns and eateries in Coniston village, less than a mile away, or drive 3.4 miles to Brantwood, the former home and gorgeous gardens of artist John Ruskin. Further on, Grizedale Forest (7.5 miles) has walking and cycling trails plus a Go Ape treetop adventure, and is en route to Ambleside (8.5 miles), which sits at the northern end of Windermere, England’s largest lake.
