The five-arched stone bridge erected in 1651 across the River Leven gives the small community of Newby Bridge its name. Furness Railway runs between Haverthwaite and Newby Bridge, one of Britain's oldest still-operating standard gauge steam lines. Stay at one of Windermere's lakeside hotels to take in the lake and surrounding fell views, or go to the Aquarium of the Lakes to learn about the lake's history through its ecologically designed habitat. Bowness-on-Windermere is a great spot for a day trip, and the charming village of Hawkshead, home to such notables as William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, still has its allure and character. Nearby Gummer's How offers stunning vistas.
