Poppy Cottage in Coniston is highly praised for its excellent location, comfortable beds, and well-equipped kitchen. Guests appreciate the property's peaceful garden and proximity to local amenities and outdoor activities. While some minor maintenance issues and cleanliness oversights are noted, the overall experience is positive, with many guests expressing a desire to return.
The property is generally regarded as clean, with high standards noted by several guests. However, some reviews mention cobwebs, dust, and mildew, indicating room for improvement in certain areas.
The cottage's location is consistently lauded for its convenience to Coniston, outdoor activities, and tranquility. It is described as an ideal base for exploring the Lake District.
Guests find the beds very comfortable, especially in the main bedroom. However, the attic bedroom's mattress and the dampness in a downstairs bedroom suggest some comfort issues.
The property is well-equipped, particularly the kitchen, but there are several reports of maintenance needs such as lighting issues, a flimsy door bolt, and unreliable boiler, which affect the overall experience.
While guests mention lovely toiletries and a well-stocked kitchen, there is no explicit reference to gifts or special thoughtful touches that would warrant a score in this category.

However, with this dreamy cottage, set in it’s own garden, you also get total tranquility, peace and quiet. The garden itself commands stunning views of the dramatic surrounding landscape, including breathtaking views of the Old Man Mountain and the old copper mines. Plus, there are waterfalls and luscious bluebell woods right on your doorstep.

Rich brown leather mixes with cream canvas chairs. At the centre is a wooden spiral staircase that leads to one of the bedrooms and through a door in the lounge will lead you via a few steps to the other two bedrooms.

Would definitely recommend it and use it again. One point to note is that there is no division between the living room and the bedroom up the spiral staircase. This was not a problem for our group but I can see it being an issue for some. The positive for us, was that the single bedroom had its own external entrance which was handy for late returns from the pub without disturbing people in the upstairs bedroom. Currently the blind on the velux window in the upstairs bedroom is faulty and a temporary towel placed over the window to help block light. This should be repaired asap. It does not leave a good impression. The secure garden is great, especially if visiting with a dog. However there a several loose steps on the patio and a step up from the lower garden that need to be fixed before somebody is injured.

The downstairs accommodation is very dark and plainly decorated. There is a rickety spiral staircase in the centre of the living/dining room, which leads to one of the two upstairs bedrooms. This bedroom has no door, so there is no privacy if people are in the living area. The kitchen is a good size, but not as well-equipped as other cottages we have stayed in. The microwave was in a cupboard, so it was necessary lift it out and find somewhere to plug it in if you wanted to use it (it is very heavy). The dishwasher door would not close, so we couldnât use it, and the light over the hob wasnât working. The main areas, sink, and work surfaces were clean, but other areas felt sticky. The downstairs bedroom smelled mouldy and damp, and was cold during July. The single bed mattress needs replacing. The downstairs toilet/shower room also smelled damp. The one small window which barely opens because of overgrown shrubbery is not enough to ventilate the space. The second upstairs bedroom was comfortable and light. The stairs to the bedroom are steep and there is no handrail at the top. On three occasions, workmen turned up unannounced to maintain the garden. One time they were in the garden all day, so we could not use it. They didnât knock the door to tell us they would be in the garden, we just saw them through the windows. We phoned Sykes and they were apologetic, but the same thing happened a few days later. We would definitely not return to Poppy Cottage.

The atmosphere was so peaceful and relaxing. The roll top bath in the bedroom gave a luxurious super relaxed soak. We loved the tranquil feel whilst sitting in the garden, it was so quiet. The cottage was generally very well equipped. Things we feel could have improved our stay..... The broken slab leading to garden could lead to injury. The patio area/garden furniture needs cleaning. The windows need cleaning. The cooker/hob was frustratingly difficult to light. The frying pans need replacing. Overall would love to stay here again! It was so cosy and comfortable. We had a wonderful stay.
