Guests say

Lakefield Cottage is highly praised for its stunning location, cleanliness, and comfort. Guests appreciate the beautiful views, peaceful setting, and proximity to local attractions. The cottage is well-equipped for a relaxing stay, though some guests suggest minor improvements in facilities and maintenance. The warm and cosy atmosphere is a highlight, making it a favoured return destination for many.

The cottage is consistently described as clean and well-maintained, with several reviews highlighting its spotlessness. Only one mention of pillowcase protection suggests a need for improvement, but this appears to be an isolated incident.

The location is frequently lauded for its wonderful views and proximity to local walks and attractions. The peaceful setting and ease of travel from the cottage contribute to its high rating.

Guests find the cottage comfortable, cosy, and suitable for relaxation, with a special mention of a comfortable bed. The presence of a garden and the pet-friendly nature of the property add to the comfort level.

While the cottage is generally well-equipped, several reviews suggest that the provision of basic supplies such as soap and washing up liquid could be improved. A dripping kitchen tap and difficulty with the induction hob are noted, indicating some areas for maintenance attention.

The property is appreciated for thoughtful touches like Christmas decorations and a gift, although these are not consistently mentioned across reviews. It is important to note that while such gestures are appreciated, they may not be a standard offering for every stay.

About this property

This charming property is steeped in history. Built in the orchard of Beatrix Potter’s former holiday home ‘Lakefield’, and with views over her loveable character Jeremy Fisher’s Esthwaite Water, there can be no better place for a couple and their beloved pet to spend a romantic Lake District holiday. The picturesque village of Hawkshead is just one mile down the road and here guests can stock up with groceries and fantastic local produce. Its cobbled centre is free from cars and offers a great choice of tea rooms and cafés interspersed with fascinating boutiques and gift shops. The church is well worth a visit, as is the tiny village grammar school nearby.

Once inside the cosy cottage, guests will find plenty of room in which to spread out and relax as well as a fabulous picture window overlooking the lake and nearby fells. The furnishings are generous and comfortable with the TV and DVD positioned perfectly for a lazy evening spent watching a favourite film or simply gazing out at the view. The smart oak kitchen is exceedingly well appointed with every pot and pan one could possibly need. A luxury house bathroom and pretty bedroom are on the first floor, and it is worth pointing out that this double bedroom comes with an additional single bed, perfect for a younger child.

Round and about the village are a seemingly endless choice of walks to enjoy, Beatrix Potter’s famous cottage Hill Top to visit, and a car-ferry crossing to Bowness is only a short drive away. This is an excellent base for exploring the Lake District, with Ambleside, Coniston and Grizedale Forest all within easy reach.

The picturesque village of Hawkshead still retains the charm and character that so endeared it to its most famous residents - William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. Visitors can wander the wealth of tiny alleyways, thoroughfares, archways and courtyards between the whitewashed 17th century houses. There are many pleasant inns, teashops, guest houses and gift shops in the village, as well as the Beatrix Potter Gallery, which houses an annually changing exhibition of the famous author’s illustrations and stories. The other famous Hawkshead enthusiast, William Wordsworth, attended the Old Grammar School in 1779-87, which still stands today, and you can visit the building where the Lakeland poet developed his love of the form, and even see the desk into which he scratched his name as a small boy! Newby Bridge is ten miles away and offers attractions such as the Aquarium of the Lakes and Windermere Lake Cruises, sailing daily between Ambleside, Bowness and Lakeside. With stunning scenery and numerous attractions within easy touring distance, Hawkshead is in an ideal location at any time of the year.

The view of the Cumbrian mountains was absolutely stunning especially when we looked out of the window one morning and saw snow on them. The house had everything that we needed, but we saw notes left in every room. We understand that we need instructions but there is a folder there also, so it would be better to have them in there and the folder to be left on the table or bookshelf. The ironing board also needs to be changed as it is very very tired, I actually used the board and every time I tried to move my item of clothing on the ironing board, I kept catching the very loose piece of material that was attached to it. Also I did not expect to have to find a recycling centre to dispose of my recycling. The nearest recycling centre was in Windermere, which was very awkward as we were going home in the opposite direction. I would have at least expected some kind of recycling bag at the cottage, and maybe an outside light might be put outside so that when we come back in the dark we can see what we are doing.

We enjoyed a lovey week with our 1 year old and dog. The cottage has everything you need and an enclosed garden. Great location in the lakes close to Tarn Hows, Grizedale Forest and Ambleside. We would very much recommend the cottage and hope to visit again in the future.

The views over the lake are amazing. I couldn't reach the crockery in the corner wall cupboard so my tall husband had to bring them down. I didn't spot the step on stool that was tucked out of sight, until the day we were leaving
