About this property

Welcome to The Old Bakehouse, a cosy retreat set within one of Kendal’s historic yards, once home to the Hogg family’s bustling 19th‑century bakehouse. The site dates back to 1666 this spot was alive with bakers, weavers, nail makers, and riverside workshops perched above the floodplain. Though the original cottages made way for modern Kendal in the 1960s, the yard was lovingly restored in 2003, allowing The Old Bakehouse to carry forward the warmth and industrious spirit of its past. The Old Bakehouse is a delightful ground-floor apartment settled into the heart of the bustling riverside town of Kendal. With access to local amenities, as well as both the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Park, this is an ideal base for friends, families, and couples, plus their four-legged companions, to explore Cumbria from. Entering into the property you will find a lovely feature stone wall alongside space to hang up your coats, as well as lights set into the base of the walls for an unusual and contemporary feel. Make yourself at home in the living/dining room, a charming room with an electric fire to add ambiance. Here you can enjoy hearty meals at the dining table or recline in the sitting area for a movie night. The kitchen is a contemporary space with plenty of amenities, as well as a light and airy feel, encouraging guests to cook up a storm using local produce. The master bedroom offers a lovely stone feature wall, with a stylish shower room offering Jack-and-Jill access. There is a twin bedroom, also serviced by a shower room. Outside, take morning coffee in the courtyard before heading out to explore. Kendal is a delightful location for your Cumbria getaway, offering riverside walks, plenty of shops, pubs and eateries to browse at your leisure, and the ruins of Kendal Castle. The town is settled between both the Lake District National Park, and the Yorkshire Dales National Park, offering a great many attractions. The Lake District offers fantastic countryside walks and lakes, with Lake Windermere within reach, beside which guests can enjoy a meal out at the bustling villages of Windermere and Ambleside. Windermere offers watersports activities and lakeside cruises, and from here there are many walks, including those at Stock Ghyll Force waterfall, Scafell Pike, The Old Man of Coniston and Helvellyn. The Yorkshire Dales houses many more scenic walks at Ingleborough and

Cautley Spout, as well as golf courses. There is simply so much to be explored with a memorable getaway to Cumbria in The Old Bakehouse.

A historic market town with a fine reputation for shopping, Kendal nestles on the banks of the River Kent and is known as the Southern Gateway to the Lakes. Its old cobbled lanes and byways branch off the attractive main street, and the stone ruins of 12th century Kendal Castle sit perched on a hill with views over the town. Visit The Abbot Hall Art Gallery, its regular collection holding portraits by Kendal born George Romney and works by Turner and Ruskin, with other exhibitions through its links with the Tate. Both Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall with its superb Topiary Garden are nearby, as are limestone escarpments for easy walking, offering thrilling views of the Lakeland Mountains, the Howgills and Morecambe Bay. Kendal itself is ideally placed for exploring South Lakeland, the Yorkshire Dales and beyond. With other attractions such as Kendal Museum and the Museum of Lakeland Life, the fascinating Quaker Tapestry, Lake Windermere and the wider National Park within easy reach, Kendal provides a superb base for a relaxing break.
